Aliro 1.0 is now official. The Connectivity Standards Alliance released the digital-access specification on February 26, 2026, with Apple, Google, Samsung, lock makers, access-control companies, and semiconductor suppliers contributing to its development. Aliro is designed to let phones, watches, wallets, locks, readers, and building-access systems work together across vendors.
It is not an Apple-owned standard, a single smart-lock product, or an automatic software upgrade for existing locks. For building owners, developers, and facility managers, the practical significance is potential interoperability—but certification, wallet support, firmware, regional availability, and credential administration still have to line up.

What Aliro 1.0 actually is
Aliro is an open communication protocol and digital-credential standard for access control. It is intended for homes, offices, hotels, apartments, campuses, parking facilities, elevators, and other controlled entrances.
A typical Aliro system includes:
- a credential issued by a homeowner, landlord, employer, hotel, or access administrator;
- a supported phone or wearable that stores the credential;
- an Aliro-enabled lock, reader, keypad, or access-control system; and
- software that checks the credential against the relevant access policy.
The user may tap a device, bring it near a reader, or use a hands-free proximity experience. Aliro 1.0 supports NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy, and Bluetooth LE combined with Ultra-Wideband. The Alliance also describes the standard as supporting secure, privacy-preserving exchanges using asymmetric cryptography.

Because the access exchange need not depend entirely on a live internet connection, Aliro is intended to be useful in places such as underground garages and elevators. That does not guarantee that every product works completely offline: cloud services, account provisioning, revocation, firmware, and building-management systems may still be required.
The Connectivity Standards Alliance announced Aliro 1.0 alongside a certification program and test suites. The release was therefore a specification and ecosystem milestone—not the launch of one universal lock.
Apple’s role: important, but not ownership
Apple participated in the Aliro collaboration, and the Alliance lists Apple among the mobile-wallet ecosystems aligned with the standard. That makes “Apple-supported” a reasonable description of Apple’s involvement, but Aliro is administered by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the organization also associated with Matter.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apple participation does not mean that:
- Aliro is an Apple standard;
- every iPhone currently supports Aliro;
- every Apple Home-compatible lock will receive Aliro;
- Aliro automatically replaces Apple Home Key; or
- an Aliro-certified product automatically works with Apple Wallet in every country.
Actual functionality depends on the particular lock or reader, wallet implementation, phone or watch hardware, operating-system version, firmware, access provider, and region.

Aliro, Matter, and Apple Home Key are different
| Technology | Primary purpose | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Aliro | Digital credentials and communication between a credential device and an access point | Designed for Apple, Google, Samsung, and broader access ecosystems; certification and wallet support remain separate steps |
| Matter | Smart-home device control and interoperability | Can help platforms control a compatible lock, but does not itself create a universal digital key |
| Apple Home Key | Apple Wallet-based home entry | An Apple feature, not an equivalent to Aliro; Home Key support does not prove Aliro certification |
| Manufacturer app or cloud system | Setup, remote control, codes, automations, and administration | May remain necessary even when a product supports Aliro |
A lock could use Matter over Thread or Wi-Fi for smart-home control while using Aliro for phone-based access. The standards are complementary rather than direct competitors. Espressif describes Matter and Aliro as complementary technologies. Apple’s existing Matter integration is documented in its Apple Home developer documentation.
What is certified or available?
The most important distinction for buyers and construction projects is between Aliro-certified, Aliro-compatible, and planned or expected support.
| Product or platform | Status | Confirmed information | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aliro 1.0 | Official specification | Released February 26, 2026, with certification tools | The ecosystem is still entering commercial rollout |
| Nuki Keypad 2 NFC | Aliro-certified | NFC implementation; certificate CSA26003ALR80003-NF, dated February 26, 2026 | Designed to pair with a compatible Matter-capable Nuki Smart Lock; wallet and regional limits still need checking |
| Aqara Smart Lock U400 | Aliro-certified | UWB implementation; certificate CSA26007ALR80007-UW, dated March 24, 2026 | Phone, watch, operating-system, hub, wallet, and regional requirements apply |
| Schlage Sense Pro | Marketed as Aliro-compatible | Apple hands-free entry, Apple Home Key, Matter over Thread, keypad, and Schlage app | The cited CSA record is for Matter certification, not Aliro certification; Schlage describes Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet support as expected after certification |
Nuki Keypad 2 NFC
The CSA certification record for Nuki Keypad 2 NFC identifies it as an Aliro 1.0-certified product using NFC. Nuki positions it as an early residential Aliro keypad, intended for use with a compatible Nuki Smart Lock.
This is an accessory certification, not evidence that every Nuki lock model or every wallet is supported. It is best suited to a project already using compatible Nuki hardware and seeking tap-based access rather than hands-free UWB entry. Nuki’s product announcement is available at nuki.io.

Aqara Smart Lock U400
The Aqara U400 has an Aliro 1.0 certification record for UWB. Aqara’s U.S. product page lists Apple Home Key, Matter, fingerprint entry, passcodes, NFC cards, app access, and a physical key. The page showed a price of $269.99 when checked, but pricing can change.
Aqara’s compatibility requirements are version-sensitive. Its current page should be checked for supported iPhone and Apple Watch models, operating systems, and the Apple Home/Matter controller requirements before specifying the lock for a project. Aliro certification does not by itself establish universal wallet support.
Schlage Sense Pro
Schlage began selling the Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt on June 29, 2026, and describes it as Aliro-compatible. The product supports Apple hands-free unlocking, Apple Home Key, Matter over Thread, keypad codes, and the Schlage Home app.
However, the CSA record identified for Sense Pro is a Matter 1.3 certification, not an Aliro certificate. Schlage’s launch announcement says Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet support is expected after certification. That makes Sense Pro a useful example of why marketing compatibility claims and formal certification records should be checked separately.

What this means for construction and access-control projects
Aliro’s importance extends beyond residential front doors. It could eventually simplify credential provisioning across apartments, offices, hotels, campuses, garages, elevators, and shared facilities where occupants, employees, guests, and contractors use different devices.
For a new-build or retrofit specification, do not write only “Aliro-compatible.” Define the required system at each layer:
- Credential ecosystem: Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, a manufacturer app, or an enterprise access platform.
- Reader and lock hardware: the exact model, hardware revision, and supported Aliro transport.
- Connectivity: NFC, Bluetooth LE, UWB, Thread, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or a combination.
- Building software: credential issuance, visitor access, revocation, audit logs, and administrator roles.
- Offline behavior: what continues working when the internet, hub, or building network is unavailable.
- Fallback entry: keypad, physical key, NFC card, emergency power, or another non-phone method.
- Lifecycle support: firmware updates, security advisories, replacement batteries, and certification status after updates.
Require the supplier to identify the relevant CSA certificate and the firmware covered by it. Also obtain written confirmation of which wallet features are live—not merely planned—for the intended country and device population.
Will existing smart locks get Aliro through an update?
Not automatically. Aliro support requires implementation in the relevant lock, reader, keypad, firmware, wallet, and credential-management system. A Matter update does not prove Aliro support, and an Aliro implementation does not necessarily add Matter control or Apple Home integration.
Best Value
- Passcode Entry: This keypad lock offers 20 access codes for family use and a temporary code for single-use guest entry
- One-Time Code: A one-time PIN code can be set for door opening and will automatically be deleted after use
- Smart Locking: Features an automatic door lock that can be set to lock in 10-99 seconds (off by default) and one-touch auto-lock by pressing and holding any key on the keypad for 2 seconds
- Long Battery Life & Low Battery Indicator: Powered by 4 AA batteries (not included), lasts up to 365 days. A red light indicator alerts you when battery level drops below 15%
- Security Deadbolt: Provides reliable home protection with its sturdy aluminum alloy construction, weather resistance (IP54), durability, anti-peeping user code protection, low battery indicator, and solid lock cylinder
An existing lock may receive Aliro through a manufacturer firmware update, but that is a product-specific promise. Do not assume an upgrade is possible unless the manufacturer identifies the exact model, hardware revision, firmware version, supported transports, and certification path.
Buyer and project checklist
- Verify certification. Search the CSA certified-products database for the exact product, not just the brand.
- Confirm the wallet. Check whether the intended users can use Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, or only the manufacturer’s app.
- Match the transport. NFC is tap-based; UWB may enable hands-free proximity access but has stricter device and software requirements.
- Check smart-home support separately. Matter, Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings compatibility are different from Aliro credential access.
- Confirm physical fit. Check deadbolt type, backset, door thickness, bore dimensions, interior clearance, latch alignment, and rental or HOA restrictions.
- Plan for failure. Decide what happens when a phone battery dies, the lock battery is depleted, the internet fails, a device is lost, or a credential is revoked.
- Review administration and security. Ask about local versus cloud authentication, audit logs, revocation, secure hardware, update policy, and vulnerability disclosure.
Should you wait before buying?
Buy an established Apple Home Key lock now if:
You are committed to Apple Home and want a known Apple Wallet experience today. Home Key remains relevant and existing Home Key products do not become obsolete merely because Aliro 1.0 has been released.
Consider early Aliro hardware if:
You value cross-platform potential, accept that support may vary by wallet and region, and can verify certification and fallback entry for the exact product. The Aqara U400 and Nuki Keypad 2 NFC have formal Aliro certification records, but they serve different hardware and access scenarios.
Recommended Free Tools
Wait if:
Your main requirement is seamless Apple, Google, and Samsung wallet access across brands, or you are specifying a large development where long-term interoperability and access-provider support matter more than early adoption. The specification is official, but the certified-product and wallet ecosystem is still developing.
The bottom line
Aliro 1.0 is a meaningful infrastructure release: it gives manufacturers and access providers a common target for digital credentials across phones, wearables, readers, and locks. Apple’s participation makes it relevant to Apple users, but Aliro is not Apple-owned and does not replace Apple Home Key or Matter.
For construction and facilities decisions, treat Aliro as a promising interoperability layer rather than a guarantee of universal access. Specify the exact certified hardware, wallet, firmware, region, credential system, and backup entry method—and verify each one before installation.
