What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your dishwasher won’t start, first check the power and breaker if the panel is blank; if the panel responds, check the door latch, water supply, and cycle settings. A control lock or delay-start setting can also make a working dishwasher seem unresponsive. Try only the reset procedure for your exact model—there is no universal button sequence.
Start with the symptom
| What you see | Check first |
|---|---|
| No lights or button response | Power supply, household breaker, then control lock. |
| Panel lights up, but the cycle will not begin | Door latch, water supply valve, control lock, standby or sleep mode, and delay-start setting. |
These checks can identify a setting or supply issue, but symptoms alone cannot confirm whether an internal part has failed.
If the panel is blank or unresponsive
Check power without opening the appliance
- Check that the dishwasher’s power connection has not been accidentally switched off or disconnected.
- Check the household breaker. If it has tripped, follow the instructions on your electrical panel to reset it. If it trips again, stop and contact a qualified electrician or appliance service provider.
- Do not remove panels or open an electrical compartment to investigate wiring.
Check control lock
Some dishwashers disable the buttons when control lock is active, so the panel may appear not to respond. Whirlpool explains that control lock disables the controls and directs owners to the model’s manual for the release instructions: Whirlpool control-lock guidance. Look for a lock indicator and use the instructions for your exact model rather than guessing at a button combination.
If the panel responds but the cycle will not start
Make sure the door is latching
Push the racks fully into place and check that dishes or utensils are not obstructing the door. Close it firmly. A door can look closed without the latch registering; if the machine still refuses to start, a latch or lock fault is possible. Bosch advises contacting support if the latch or lock is damaged: Bosch dishwasher troubleshooting.

Check the water supply
Confirm that the dishwasher’s water-supply valve is open. Whirlpool notes that a dishwasher may not initiate a cycle if it does not detect water: Whirlpool dishwasher start troubleshooting.
Check the selected settings
- Turn off control lock using the model-specific instructions.
- Check whether standby or sleep mode is active and follow the manual to wake the dishwasher.
- Check whether delay-start or delay wash is set. Cancel it or wait for the scheduled start, depending on what you intended.
Whirlpool’s product-family guidance covers these checks along with the door latch and water valve: Whirlpool product-help troubleshooting.

Reset only according to the model’s instructions
Reset methods and timings differ—even between manufacturer guidance pages. For example, Whirlpool describes a 30-second reset in one guide, while another Whirlpool procedure calls for at least one minute after cancelling or draining; Bosch’s troubleshooting overview says to hold a control for at least five seconds. These are different model-dependent procedures, not interchangeable universal steps.
- Find the dishwasher’s model number, usually on a label around the door or frame.
- Open the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model.
- Follow its reset or cancel-and-drain procedure, including the stated timing. Do not substitute another brand’s button sequence.
- After the reset, select a cycle and close the door as the manual directs. If the same problem returns, arrange service rather than repeatedly resetting the appliance.
When to call for service
Contact the manufacturer’s support team or a qualified appliance repair provider if the dishwasher still will not start after the safe checks and model-specific reset, if a breaker trips again, or if the latch appears damaged. A failed touchpad, control board, latch, wiring, or another internal part cannot be identified from the symptom alone. Have the model number ready when you call; it helps support identify the correct manual and service information.
