People still prepared and loaded dishes, and clean items still went through a commercial sanitizer. The company later shifted its emphasis from customized on-site machines to centralized reusable-dishware collection, washing, and delivery.
How Dishcraft’s 2019 dishwashing robot worked
The system was designed for a controlled commercial workflow and custom dishware. According to IEEE Spectrum’s 2019 account, workers first sorted and stacked dishes into carts. A robot arm then picked up dishes individually using a magnetic mechanism that relied on steel built into the ware’s base.
A rotating scrubber cleaned each dish. The machine turned it through 120 degrees for computer-vision and machine-learning inspection. If the inspection found residue, the dish made another cleaning pass; if it passed, it was placed in a standard rack. That rack still had to go through a commercial sanitizer.
What was automated—and what remained manual
- Automated: individual dish pickup, mechanical scrubbing, inspection, and another cleaning pass when a dish failed inspection.
- Still done by people: sorting and stacking dishes, loading carts, and moving racks to sanitation.
- Required by the workflow: custom steel-bottom dishes compatible with magnetic pickup and a downstream commercial sanitizing step.
TechCrunch’s June 18, 2019 launch report said staff could load stacks of up to 90 dishes and described the system as using vision-based AI to identify plates needing another cleaning. Dishcraft was then selling customized systems to kitchens; the report said it had not publicly released pricing (TechCrunch, June 18, 2019).

Why the headline doesn’t mean robots replaced dishroom workers
“Takes over dishwashing” describes a pitch to automate a repetitive part of the job, rather than a fully autonomous kitchen. The equipment handled scrubbing and inspection inside a process that still depended on people to prepare dishes and move them between stages. Its custom dishware requirement also meant operators could not treat it as a plug-in robot for any existing stack of plates.
For a foodservice operator, the practical question is therefore not simply whether a robot can wash dishes. It is whether the full workflow fits: the ware, cart loading, staffing pattern, space, peak volume, and sanitation process. The 2019 reporting does not establish a general-purpose machine that could independently handle arbitrary dishes from dirty tableware through final sanitation.

Dishcraft’s shift to centralized dishwashing as a service
By May 2020, Dishcraft was emphasizing a hub-based service rather than only customized equipment installed in a customer’s kitchen. In the model reported by TechCrunch, the company delivered clean reusable dishes and cutlery to businesses, collected used items, and washed them at a central facility. CEO Linda Pouliot described the idea as “cloud dishwashing” in that report (TechCrunch, May 27, 2020).
The 2020 article reported a 25-mile collection radius around Dishcraft’s San Carlos facility, named Affirm and Guckenheimer as customers, and said the company’s robot complement could clean up to 10,000 pieces of dishware or cutlery. These are figures and customer examples reported at that time, not verified current operating metrics or a 2026 customer roster.

In a December 2021 interview, Pouliot said the centralized model could avoid large customer capital costs and on-site construction. She described serving corporate cafeterias, foodservice providers, caterers, food-delivery providers, hotels, and restaurants. Those comments document the company’s stated market and model at interview time; they do not establish today’s service availability or geography (Hotel Technology News, December 2021).
What the reported efficiency claims establish
In the 2021 interview, Pouliot attributed to Dishcraft comparisons of one-tenth the energy, one-quarter the water, and one-eighth the labor versus a traditional dishroom. The interview also reported 22 inspections per item, 12 granted patents, and 15 pending patents. These are company-reported claims and figures in an interview, not independently validated performance results in the cited material. The sources do not provide a common measurement method or enough comparable current data to calculate an operator’s likely savings.

Likewise, TechCrunch’s 2020 report said Dishcraft had raised $46 million in total venture funding. That is historical funding coverage, not a measure of present capacity, financial condition, or service availability.

An operator weighing an on-site automated system against a centralized dishware service should compare the complete operating model, not just the robot’s washing stage. The dated reporting provides no current price list or sufficient independently measured data for a numerical comparison.

- Investment and facilities: equipment and installation costs, required space, and whether the process requires construction or changes to the dishroom.
- Throughput: capacity during peak meal periods, not only an overall or maximum daily figure.
- Ware and workflow: accepted dish types, any custom-ware requirement, and who sorts, stacks, loads, and transfers dishes.
- Sanitation: which process completes sanitizing and how racks move into it.
- Service logistics: if washing is centralized, confirm the actual service area, pickup and delivery schedule, and availability for the site.
- Performance evidence: ask how water, energy, labor, and inspection claims were measured and whether the comparison matches the operator’s own baseline.
Is Dishcraft a home dishwasher-loading robot?
No. The reported Dishcraft system was a commercial-kitchen process, and the later model described in coverage was a business-to-business dishware service. In the 2021 interview, Pouliot did not give a timeline for a household robot that loads and unloads a dishwasher; she said she looked forward to a consumer company solving that problem. Dishcraft’s coverage should not be read as evidence that a consumer appliance performing those tasks was available.
What is known about Dishcraft today?
The technical account dates to 2019, the service-model reporting to 2020, and the CEO interview to 2021. Dishcraft’s LinkedIn page describes Dishcraft Daily as a full-service delivery service, but the profile does not establish when that description was last updated or confirm current operations (Dishcraft on LinkedIn). The cited material therefore does not verify current customers, service geography, pricing, or availability.
