To get rid of roaches and reduce the chance they return, combine sanitation, moisture control, sealing, monitoring, and—if needed—pesticide bait used exactly as its current label directs. No single cleaning step or trap guarantees an infestation is gone. If activity continues after you address food, water, hiding places, and label-compliant treatment, contact a licensed pest-control professional.

Start by removing food and water

Roaches can persist where food scraps, accessible water, and sheltered spaces are available. Begin with the conditions you can change every day:

  • Put food and pet food away in tightly sealed containers.
  • Wipe crumbs and spills promptly, and clean dishes rather than leaving them overnight.
  • Keep rubbish in a closed bin and empty it regularly.
  • Repair leaking taps and pipes, and deal with other accessible sources of water.

These steps are part of integrated pest management (IPM), which combines prevention with other control measures. The CDC describes IPM as “a science-based, common-sense approach for reducing populations of disease vectors and public health pests” in its What Is Integrated Pest Management? guidance. The EPA likewise recommends prevention alongside appropriate pest-control tools in Smart Pest Control to Protect Your Health.

Reduce hiding places and block entry routes

Clear clutter where practical, particularly in cupboards and along walls where roaches can shelter. Seal cracks and gaps in cabinets, walls, and baseboards, and around plumbing penetrations. This exclusion work can limit hiding places and routes into rooms, but it does not replace treatment when roaches are already established.

ATSDR includes sealing cracks and crevices among its recommended home measures for reducing environmental asthma triggers. See Environmental Triggers of Asthma: Treatment, Management, and Prevention.

Monitor activity before choosing treatment

Place monitoring traps where you have seen roaches or suspect activity, such as near cupboards or along walls. Check them regularly to see whether activity is continuing and which areas may need attention. Traps can help monitor a problem; finding or catching roaches in them does not establish that an infestation has been eliminated. The EPA lists traps and bait stations among possible tools within a broader pest-control approach.

If you use bait, follow that product’s label

Gel bait can be one option, but placement and use directions vary by product. Read the current label for the exact formulation you buy, and follow its instructions for permitted locations, application, and reapplication. Do not copy directions from another product or assume that all baits can be used in the same way.

For example, the EPA consumer-use label for CSI 16-202 Roach Gel, dated December 9, 2024, permits specified indoor crack-and-crevice, spot, or bait-station use. It prohibits use on exposed food or food-handling surfaces and in areas accessible to children or pets. It also warns against applying bait where insecticide was recently used or spraying insecticide over bait, which may make the bait repellent. Those are directions for that product, not a universal label for every roach bait. The EPA label for CSI 15-107A2 Indox Roach Gel Bait, dated November 6, 2024, also restricts use on food-preparation surfaces and where children or pets can access it; its directions likewise are product-specific.

Keep all pesticides out of reach of children and pets, and do not apply them to surfaces or locations the label prohibits. The EPA’s Do’s and Don’ts of Pest Control offers further consumer safety guidance.

Avoid sprays and foggers as the default

Sprays and room foggers are not a substitute for removing food, water, and shelter, and they may present health risks. The CDC advises: “Avoid using sprays and foggers as these can cause asthma attacks.” Roach body parts and droppings can also trigger asthma symptoms. If asthma is a concern in your household, review the CDC’s Controlling Asthma page and the EPA’s Asthma Triggers: Gain Control before choosing a treatment method.

When to call a pest-control professional

If roach activity persists after you have reduced food and water, cleared clutter, sealed gaps, monitored activity, and used any pesticide strictly according to its label, seek help from a licensed pest-control professional. Licensing rules vary by location. When comparing providers, ask whether they can use baits and crack-and-crevice treatments where feasible; the EPA includes that advice in its consumer guidance on pest-control do’s and don’ts.

The best treatment can depend on details such as the roach species and conditions in the home. Without identifying those details, no particular product or method can be promised to work in every household.
