You can use an ESP32-C5 to run the communications and control side of a home energy monitor, but the chip alone is not a complete electricity meter. The key design decision is how to measure the electrical service: choose a suitable sensing and metering front end for the service topology, then pass its readings to the C5 for processing and connectivity.
What the ESP32-C5 does in an energy monitor
Espressif’s ESP32-C5 datasheet, version 1.5 dated 2026-09-03, lists dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth LE, IEEE 802.15.4, and peripherals including SPI, I2C, GPIO, and an ADC. Those capabilities can support network communication, device control, and connections to sensors or a metering component, depending on the board and firmware.

The datasheet does not characterize the ESP32-C5 as a dedicated energy-metering IC. An ADC and a current sensor do not, by themselves, provide a complete or verified household energy reading. A monitor must measure the electrical quantities needed for the intended results and account for the sensing circuit, signal conditioning, calibration, and service topology.
Choose the measurement topology before the board
First establish whether the installation is single-phase or poly-phase, what quantities the monitor must report, the required accuracy, and how it will sense the conductors. Those decisions determine the meter and sensor architecture; the title alone does not establish them.
#1 Best Overall
- This kit includes 3 ESP32-C5 development boards, 1 Type-C data cable, and 40 DuPont wires. The development board features a 32-bit single-core RISC-V processor with a maximum operating frequency of 240 MHz.
- Equipped with 4MB Flash and 384KB SRAM, providing ample storage space for complex applications and firmware to ensure stable and smooth project operation.
- With 32 GPIO pins, it easily connects to various sensors, displays, and peripherals. Equipped with a USB Type-C port and a CH340X chip, it enables simple and efficient programming and debugging.
- Supports Wi-Fi 6 dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) for lower latency and stronger interference resistance; simultaneously integrates Bluetooth (supporting low-power mode), Zigbee, and Thread to meet diverse IoT connectivity needs.
- Compatible with for Arduino IDE development environment, its extensive online resources significantly lower the learning curve, enabling both beginners and experienced developers to quickly get their projects started.
- Service topology: A single-phase design is not automatically suitable for poly-phase service. Analog Devices describes the ADE9153A as a single-phase metering IC, while Microchip’s energy-metering design material covers poly-phase designs and links to the ATM90E32AS.
- Measurements: Decide whether you need RMS values, active, reactive, or apparent power, energy accumulation, or power-quality features. Select a front end that supports the specific quantities required.
- Sensor and range: Microchip lists shunt, current transformer (CT), and Rogowski coil sensing options. Analog Devices documents CT use on a current channel for the ADE9153A. A CT still needs to fit the conductor arrangement and current range and to be paired with suitable signal conditioning and metering inputs.
- Accuracy and calibration: Set an accuracy objective for the finished monitor and plan how the assembled system will be calibrated and validated. Component capabilities alone do not establish system-level accuracy.
- Installation and isolation: Define the intended installation method and applicable local requirements before choosing hardware. The cited component descriptions do not provide a jurisdiction-specific safety procedure.
Compare the main measurement approaches
| Approach | What it can suit | What to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Analog sensor and metering implementation | A design that reads a sensor signal and performs the required metering calculations in an appropriate implementation. | Sensor type and range, signal conditioning, service topology, required calculations, calibration, and isolation. |
| Dedicated metering IC or evaluation hardware | A design that uses a metering component to calculate supported electrical measurements and supplies results to the controller. | Supported phase count and measurements, sensor interface, host interface, board compatibility, and how the finished system will be validated. |
A dedicated IC can handle metering functions that are not established merely by the C5’s general-purpose peripherals. For example, Analog Devices describes the ADE9153A as a single-phase device with RMS measurement, active, reactive, and apparent power and energy features, and an SPI interface. Its product documentation specifies 88 dB SNR and describes mSure autocalibration and Class 1/Class 2 support. These are manufacturer-described component capabilities, not a certification or accuracy guarantee for a DIY monitor.
Connect the metering front end to the ESP32-C5
A defensible high-level architecture is a suitable sensor and metering front end feeding measurement results to the ESP32-C5 over a supported digital interface such as SPI. The C5 can then handle local control and connectivity. The exact circuit, pin assignments, power requirements, and firmware depend on the selected meter and C5 board.

Do not assume that an evaluation board compatible with another controller will work with a C5 board without checking its documentation. Analog Devices says the EV-ADE9153ASHIELDZ is compatible with Arduino Uno, Arduino Zero, or ESP8266; that statement does not establish ESP32-C5 compatibility. Check the evaluation hardware’s interface requirements and the exact C5 board’s pinout and exposed peripherals before planning an interconnection.

No particular ESP32-C5 development board is established as the right choice for this project. Before choosing one, verify that the exact board uses an ESP32-C5 and check its SPI and GPIO exposure, power supply, pinout, and RF implementation against the selected metering hardware and enclosure. The chip’s documented wireless options do not guarantee that every board exposes or implements them identically.

Do not treat component descriptions as mains-installation approval
The cited manufacturer materials describe MCU and metering-component capabilities; they do not certify a DIY installation on household mains or supply safety instructions for a particular jurisdiction. Do not infer that a prototype is safe to connect to household wiring because it uses a CT, an ESP32-C5, or a metering IC. Establish the applicable local requirements and use authoritative, jurisdiction-specific safety guidance before designing or installing any mains-connected equipment.
