Completed in 2025, it brings together 401 rental homes, care and community facilities, commercial space, and shared outdoor areas. INBO and BureauVanEig developed the architecture together, giving the long block a varied character through changes in height, façade, and balcony design.
What is Singelblok?
Singelblok is a large housing ensemble at the edge of Elzenhagen, within walking distance of Noord metro station. INBO describes it as a “small town in the city along the canal”: a single development that combines homes with care, neighborhood, and commercial functions rather than serving only as a residential block. Its 401 rental homes are provided within a broader mix of indoor and outdoor shared spaces.

The 180-metre length and 401-home figure come from INBO’s undated project page, accessed in 2026. De Architect reports a gross floor area of 41,500 m² in 2026. These figures describe the project’s scale, not measured housing or social outcomes.

INBO and BureauVanEig jointly handled the architectural elaboration. INBO says it designed the building structure and developed the project technically; the two offices collaborated on the architectural design. BureauVanEig describes eight buildings and two set-back towers, with sections designed alternately by the two offices. De Architect also uses the eight-building and two-tower description.
#1 Best Overall
Some project records count the ensemble differently: supplier Intal refers to seven building parts. The sources do not explain whether that reflects a different way of counting the towers or sections, so no single total for the component parts is definitive.
Project records identify CZAN Blauw / Blauwhoed and AM in client or development roles, Vesteda and Eigen Haard as housing providers, perMens as the care organization, Heddes Bouw & Ontwikkeling as contractor, Pieters Bouwtechniek as structural engineer, and Hollands Groen as landscape architect. Intal supplied façade systems and Riboton supplied concrete ornaments.

How the long building is given variety
The architects describe a curved block whose sections vary in height and façade character while maintaining a continuous street wall. Brick patterns, differentiated colors, balconies, bay windows, and concrete ornaments help distinguish its parts. BureauVanEig says the ornaments draw inspiration from sculptor Constantin Brâncuși.

INBO says openings in its sections connect across two storeys. This treatment breaks up the impression of a simple stack of floors and establishes a calmer rhythm along the lengthy frontage. Together with changes in materials and façade articulation, the openings make the block legible as an ensemble rather than a uniform wall.

Balconies as thresholds
BureauVanEig emphasizes balconies as an integral part of the home: living spaces open onto them, and their partly recessed form provides shelter and a transition between indoors and outdoors. Bay windows and balconies also add depth to the façades.
Housing, care, and shared spaces
INBO identifies 66 homes for people who are socially vulnerable or have experienced homelessness. These homes sit within housing and care functions for perMens. Shared rooms on each floor, a larger common living room with a kitchen and dining table, and care rooms place support within the residential setting. The project also includes a neighborhood room intended for people living in Elzenhagen Zuid and nearby areas.
Above the parking structure, residents share a landscaped inner garden or deck. BureauVanEig describes greenery, paths, and places to stay; INBO also notes bicycle and car parking and a car-sharing concept. The project pages document these provisions, but do not report resident-experience findings or measured social outcomes.
