What a New Deck Really Costs in 2026: Materials, Labor, and the Line Items That Move the Price

Angi’s 2026 guide reports an $8,320 national average for a new deck, with a typical range of $4,339–$12,652. Learn how materials, labor, structure, access, stairs, demolition, and permits affect a local estimate.

Angi’s 2026 guide puts the national average cost to build a deck at $8,320, with a typical project range of $4,339–$12,652. It also gives a broad construction range of $30–$60 per square foot, but these are planning figures—not a quote or a guarantee for your location, design, or project scope.

A deck estimate depends on more than surface boards: compare framing and footings, labor, stairs and railings, demolition and disposal, and permits. Keep material-only prices separate from installed totals, and get local bids for the same written scope.

2026 Deck Cost at a Glance

Measure 2026 guide figure Source and scope
Average new-deck project $8,320 Angi; based on 20,403 reported projects
Typical new-deck project range $4,339–$12,652 Angi; broad project estimate
Deck construction $30–$60 per square foot Angi; broad construction range
Average pressure-treated deck project $8,000 Angi’s separate pressure-treated guide
Typical pressure-treated project range $4,000–$12,000 Angi’s separate pressure-treated guide

The two Angi guides report different averages and ranges because their scopes or samples differ. Treat each as a national planning reference, not as a single definitive price. A local contractor’s written estimate should spell out what is included.

Materials: Surface Boards Versus a Complete Deck

A decking-board price is not the cost of a finished deck. A complete project can also involve lumber for the frame, concrete footings, posts, brackets and hardware, labor, railings, stairs, permits, and other work. When comparing prices, check whether the figure covers surface boards, a broader materials package, or the installed project.

Material or scope Published 2026 cost range What it covers
Pressure-treated decking $2–$5 per square foot Decking material only, per Angi’s general deck guide
Composite decking $12–$22 per square foot Decking material only, per Angi’s general deck guide
Pressure-treated deck materials $10–$25 per square foot Angi’s pressure-treated guide describes this as materials including lumber, concrete footings, hardware, and brackets—not boards alone
Installed composite decking $25–$54 per square foot Angi’s installed composite range; keep distinct from board-only cost

These ranges use different scopes and should not be compared as if they described the same package. Ask for the decking product and the included framing, footings, hardware, labor, stairs, and railing to be identified in each quote.

What Makes a Deck Quote Go Up?

  1. Size and shape. A larger deck generally needs more material and labor. Complex layouts can also add layout work and material waste. Angi reports $30–$60 per square foot for deck construction and gives a 10-by-10-foot example of $4,000–$6,000.
  2. Material choice. Pressure-treated decking has a lower published board-material range than composite in Angi’s guide. Compare upfront costs with maintenance needs, but do not assume a universal long-term savings figure.
  3. Height and structure. Elevated or second-story designs can require additional materials and structural reinforcement, and may also include stairs and guardrails.
  4. Labor, location, and access. Labor varies with project complexity and local cost of living. Difficult access can require more manual hauling; sloped or soft soil can add site preparation.
  5. Footings and substructure. A complete estimate should identify concrete, posts, framing lumber, brackets, and hardware. Reuse of an existing foundation only makes sense if it is suitable for the new design; suitability must be assessed for the individual deck.
  6. Stairs, railings, demolition, and permits. Ask whether these are included, along with disposal, inspections, and any required design work. Permit fees vary substantially by location and source estimate, so verify them with the local building department.

Labor, Site Preparation, and Permits

Angi’s pressure-treated deck guide says labor accounts for 50%–70% of total cost for a pressure-treated deck. The same guide also gives a broad labor range of $8–$40 per square foot and an overall labor example of $4,000–$5,600. These are guide estimates with potentially different project scopes, not a universal formula for calculating labor.

Site conditions and structural scope matter. Height, soil, access, stairs, and the need for additional structural reinforcement can change the work. Ask the contractor to describe the assumed site conditions and identify any work that is excluded or priced as an allowance.

How to Compare Deck Quotes

Ask local contractors to price one identical written scope. This makes it easier to see whether a lower total reflects a lower price or missing work.

  1. Write down the deck dimensions, shape, height, and selected decking material.
  2. Specify the assumed framing and footing scope, including whether the deck is attached or freestanding.
  3. List stairs, railings, and any other design features to be included.
  4. State whether demolition, disposal, permits, inspections, and design work are included.
  5. Ask each contractor to identify exclusions, allowances, and assumptions about site access and conditions.
  6. Compare the totals only after confirming that each quote covers the same scope.

HomeAdvisor also identifies regional rates, complexity, upgrades, demolition, and permits as factors to consider. A low headline number is difficult to assess if the estimate does not make those items clear.

Pressure-Treated or Composite: How to Compare

Pressure-treated boards cost less upfront in Angi’s published material ranges, while composite boards cost more. Compare the same scope and consider expected maintenance, product warranty, replacement assumptions, local availability, and installer familiarity. The board price alone does not determine which option costs less over the life of a deck.

The AZEK Company estimates that TimberTech EDGE Prime has an approximately 37% lower 25-year lifecycle cost than a comparable pressure-treated lumber deck in a specified scenario. This is a manufacturer estimate based on company knowledge and contractor feedback, not an independent study or a universal result. Its example excludes stairs, rail installation, and potential replacement costs, so it should not be applied directly to every project.

How much do deck boards cost compared with installation?

Angi lists pressure-treated decking material at $2–$5 per square foot and composite decking material at $12–$22 per square foot. Those are board-material ranges, not installed totals. Angi separately gives an installed composite range of $25–$54 per square foot.

Why do deck cost estimates vary?

Estimates can differ because of project scope, size and shape, material, height, structural requirements, local labor, site access, footings, stairs and railings, demolition, and permits. National guides also use different scopes or samples.

How much should I budget for a pressure-treated deck?

Angi’s pressure-treated guide reports an $8,000 average and a typical total project range of $4,000–$12,000. It separately lists $10–$25 per square foot for pressure-treated deck materials including lumber, footings, hardware, and brackets; that is a broader materials scope than decking boards alone.

Does a deck estimate include permits?

Not necessarily. Permit estimates vary by guide and location. Ask the contractor whether permit fees, drawings, inspections, and any required corrections are included, and verify local requirements with your building department.

Is composite decking cheaper over time than pressure-treated wood?

Not in every project. Composite has a higher published board-material range, while maintenance and replacement assumptions affect lifecycle comparisons. AZEK publishes a lower lifecycle-cost estimate for one specified TimberTech EDGE Prime scenario, but it is a manufacturer estimate with stated exclusions, not a universal result.
