Daylighting Design for Indoor Pickleball: Bright Courts Without Glare or Heat

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Indoor pickleball facilities can use natural light successfully when daylight is treated as a controlled layer of the lighting system—not as a row of unshaded skylights. The practical approach is to distribute roof daylight evenly, control its intensity, check heat and glare during design, and retain uniform electric court lighting for cloudy conditions, evening play and activities that need a different light level.

A useful example is the Roma Berry campus expansion for LIFE Senior Services in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The 8,450-square-foot recreation addition combines indoor pickleball and basketball for adults over 50. Its project profile describes twelve evenly spaced tubular daylighting devices with integrated dimmers, selected to create a bright room while addressing glare, heat gain, visual comfort and a low-slope roof.

Why daylighting is difficult in an indoor pickleball facility

Pickleball is played across a relatively compact court, but players track a small, fast ball against changing backgrounds. A bright patch on the floor, a sunlit wall behind the ball or a sharp contrast between court zones can be more disruptive than a room that is simply dim. Older adults may also be less comfortable with abrupt changes in brightness, reflections or visual clutter.

Natural light therefore has to be evaluated as a visibility and comfort problem as well as an energy or architectural feature. The main design tensions are:

  • Glare: direct sun or high-contrast reflections can draw the eye away from the ball and make serving or receiving uncomfortable.
  • Uniformity: daylight should not create bright and dark islands across adjacent courts or basketball activity areas.
  • Heat gain: roof apertures can increase solar load and cooling demand if their optical and thermal properties are not selected for the building.
  • Roof constraints: a low-slope roof may limit the location, size or detailing of conventional skylights.
  • Operational flexibility: a senior recreation room may host lessons, open play, basketball, meetings and cleaning, each with different light preferences.

These issues are why a daylighting design should be developed with the court layout, electric lighting, HVAC assumptions, roof structure and operating schedule together.

The Tulsa case: a documented approach

LIFE Senior Services is described as a Tulsa nonprofit serving adults over 50. Its Roma Berry campus expansion added an 8,450-square-foot recreation facility for indoor pickleball and basketball. The stated objective was a welcoming, bright environment that supported active aging, safe movement and social connection.

The project profile says the team considered conventional skylights but was concerned about uneven light distribution, heat gain and the low-slope roof. It reports the following selected system:

Project element Reported detail
Facility Roma Berry campus expansion, LIFE Senior Services, Tulsa, Oklahoma
Added recreation area 8,450 square feet
Activities Indoor pickleball and basketball
Daylighting equipment 12 Solatube SolaMaster 330 DS-O tubular daylighting devices
Placement Evenly spaced across the facility
Controls Each device included an integrated daylight dimmer
Installation Specialties Plus, Inc., identified in the profile as Solatube International’s commercial distributor and certified installer in Oklahoma

The equipment and outcomes are described in a Building Enclosure project profile supplied by Solatube. The page appears in the publication’s sponsored-content context, so its statements about brightness, visibility, safety, increased court use, reduced reliance on electric lighting and daylight delivered without added heat should be treated as vendor-reported qualitative results.

The profile does not publish measured illuminance, uniformity, glare ratings, energy savings, indoor-temperature changes, project cost or an independent post-occupancy evaluation. Those omissions matter: the Tulsa example demonstrates a design strategy and reported user response, not a quantified performance guarantee for every building.

How tubular daylighting supports a multi-use room

Even distribution instead of isolated bright spots

Tubular daylighting devices bring roof-level daylight to interior diffusers. In a room with several courts, spacing is as important as the number of devices. The Tulsa profile says its twelve units were evenly distributed, an arrangement intended to avoid concentrating daylight over one court or leaving circulation and spectator areas dark.

Layout should begin with the playing lines, run-offs, basketball equipment, entrances and spectator positions. A device that is well placed for one court can create an unwanted highlight in a player’s sightline on another. Draw the daylight apertures and diffuser locations on the same reflected-ceiling plan as court lights, HVAC grilles, sprinklers, scoreboards and structural members.

Adjustable output for changing activities

The integrated dimmers in the Tulsa installation were intended to let staff adjust daylight for different activities and conditions. A control should be usable by the people operating the room, not only by the original installer. Define who can change settings, whether dimming is local or centralized, and what happens when the system reaches its minimum or maximum level.

Controls are particularly useful when a room changes from daytime open play to a class, a basketball session or an event that uses a projection screen. They also provide a way to reduce a distracting bright area without blacking out the entire building.

Compatibility with a low-slope roof

The case profile presents tubular devices as an answer to concerns about conventional skylights on a low-slope roof. That does not eliminate roof coordination. Each penetration still needs structural review, weatherproofing details, insulation continuity and a maintenance plan. The roof consultant, daylighting supplier and installer should agree on curb or flashing details before procurement.

A step-by-step design process

  1. Confirm the room’s activities and dimensions. The regulation playing court is 20 feet wide by 44 feet long, according to USA Pickleball’s construction guidance. Add run-off zones, basketball clearances, circulation, seating and storage before fixing daylight locations.
  2. Map the roof and the sun. Record roof slope, framing, existing equipment, drainage, fire-protection zones and available penetration areas. Review seasonal sun angles and the times when the room is occupied. An opening that is comfortable at noon may be troublesome during early morning or late afternoon activities.
  3. Set visibility and comfort goals. Specify the desired court brightness, acceptable contrast, glare-control approach and temperature assumptions before choosing equipment. Ask the design team to show how the ball, net, court surface and backgrounds will appear from each player position.
  4. Develop an aperture and diffuser layout. Place daylight devices for balanced coverage across courts and non-court activity areas. Check conflicts with luminaires, fans, ducts, sprinklers, structural members and roof access. Avoid treating the manufacturer’s maximum spacing as a substitute for a project-specific layout.
  5. Model glare and heat. Review direct-sun paths, reflected light from the court finish, wall colors, glazing and metal equipment. Coordinate solar-load assumptions with the mechanical engineer. If the design relies on a vendor’s claim that a system adds no heat, request the boundary of that claim and the conditions behind it.
  6. Integrate electric lighting and controls. Use electric court lighting as the dependable layer for evenings, storms and low daylight. Divide controls into useful zones, provide manual override, and decide whether daylight sensors will dim fixtures automatically or merely inform staff.
  7. Commission the completed room. Walk every court at representative times, including morning and late afternoon. Check player sightlines, floor reflections, dimmer response, emergency-lighting interaction and temperature. Record baseline readings so later complaints can be investigated rather than guessed at.

Daylight and court lighting must work together

Daylight does not remove the need for court lighting. USA Pickleball’s court-lighting guidance emphasizes uniform, glare-free illumination and suggests comparing projects by location, fixture placement, pole height, spectator needs and the amount of turnkey support. Those considerations apply directly to an indoor facility, even though pole height is more relevant to outdoor or high-bay arrangements.

For an indoor project, ask the lighting designer to document:

  • how fixtures are aimed so players do not look toward a bright source while tracking the ball;
  • how light levels remain even at court edges, baselines and transition areas;
  • how luminaires interact with daylight diffusers, basketball backboards and scoreboards;
  • how spectator seating and accessible routes are lit without throwing reflections onto the playing surface;
  • which scenes are available for open play, instruction, competition, cleaning and events.

USA Pickleball names LSI Sports Lighting and Musco Lighting as lighting partners on its page. The page does not establish that either company supplied the Tulsa project or publish quantified performance results for either partner, so those names should not be treated as evidence of the case study’s outcome.

How to prevent glare on an indoor pickleball court

Glare control starts before equipment is selected. Use the following checks during design and commissioning:

  • Protect primary sightlines. Stand at the baseline, non-volley zone and service area and look toward the opponent’s side. A diffuser, luminaire or bright roof opening should not sit in the expected ball path.
  • Control contrast. Coordinate ceiling, wall and court finishes so a bright opening does not sit beside a very dark background. Matte finishes generally produce fewer hard reflections than glossy ones.
  • Use adjustable output. Dimmers allow staff to reduce a troublesome contribution during a particular sun angle or activity instead of closing the whole room.
  • Check every court, not only the center. Peripheral courts can experience a different combination of roof light, wall reflection and electric-light aiming.
  • Test occupied conditions. Have players or staff move through normal positions while the design team observes. A drawing review alone cannot reveal every visual distraction.

Outdoor orientation advice must not be misapplied to roof apertures. USA Pickleball states: Courts should be oriented north–south outdoors to avoid players looking directly into the sun during morning or late-afternoon play—a common safety hazard. That recommendation addresses outdoor court orientation. It is not an indoor skylight specification, and it does not replace an indoor glare study.

Can skylights make a pickleball court too hot?

Yes. Any roof opening can affect solar heat gain, insulation, air leakage and cooling loads. The relevant question is not whether a roof opening is inherently good or bad, but whether its optical and thermal behavior matches the room, climate and operating schedule.

The Tulsa profile says the selected daylighting system delivered daylight without adding heat and reduced the need for artificial lighting. Because the profile supplies no measured temperature, solar-gain, cooling-energy or electric-lighting data, those statements should be presented as reported project outcomes rather than universal engineering results. A new facility should have its own energy model and, after occupancy, compare indoor temperature and lighting operation with the design assumptions.

Heat control also includes ordinary building-envelope work: continuous insulation around penetrations, correctly detailed flashing, airtightness, moisture control and coordination with the HVAC system. A daylighting decision that ignores those items can create comfort or maintenance problems even if the room looks bright on opening day.

What to specify in the project documents

A useful specification turns “bright and welcoming” into checkable requirements. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the court plan, run-off dimensions and all non-sport uses of the room;
  • daylight-device type, quantity, nominal locations and allowable field adjustments;
  • glare-control intent for player sightlines, spectators and staff;
  • thermal, insulation, air-sealing and waterproofing details at every roof penetration;
  • dimmer range, control locations, override authority and fault indications;
  • coordination drawings showing daylight devices, electric luminaires, sprinklers, ducts, fans, structure and roof access;
  • commissioning procedures for daylight and electric-light scenes at different times of day;
  • owner training, cleaning access, replacement parts and warranty responsibilities.

Measurements that make a daylighting claim credible

The Tulsa profile is useful as a qualitative case, but future owners should ask for quantitative documentation. At minimum, establish how the project will record:

  • illuminance at representative points on each court and in circulation areas;
  • uniformity between the brightest and darkest playing locations;
  • glare observations or a formal glare metric selected by the lighting designer;
  • indoor air temperature and cooling response during representative sunny periods;
  • electric-light operating hours and energy use before and after control adjustments;
  • maintenance issues, user complaints and staff changes to dimmer settings;
  • accessibility and safety observations from the facility’s older users.

Document the weather, time, control scene, equipment status and measurement instrument with each reading. Without those conditions, a single number can be misleading and cannot fairly be compared with another building.

Operations and maintenance after opening

Assign responsibility for the daylighting controls before the facility opens. Staff should know which scene to use for open play, instruction, basketball, events and cleaning, and how to return to a default setting after a manual change.

Include roof penetrations and interior diffusers in the preventive-maintenance schedule. Inspect for water intrusion, damaged seals, dust, discoloration, loose trim and control faults. Keep a record of replacement components and the installer’s contact information. If players report that one court is harder to see on a particular day, log the time, weather, court, activity and control setting; that information is more useful than a general complaint that the room is “too bright.”

Planning resources and scope limits

For broader court construction and maintenance decisions, USA Pickleball identifies the 2023 edition of Pickleball Courts: A Construction & Maintenance Manual, jointly released with the American Sports Builders Association. The manual is 182 pages and covers court design, construction, maintenance and repair for builders, architects, facility managers and parks and recreation professionals. The organization says editions are published every three years and that a 2026 edition was slated; its page does not confirm that the newer edition has appeared. See the official manual page for the current edition and purchase route.

The same page attributes a figure of more than 24 million U.S. participants to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. No year is specified there, so it should not be presented as a verified 2026 participation count.

What the Tulsa example can—and cannot—tell you

The case shows how a senior-focused, multi-use recreation addition used evenly spaced tubular daylighting devices and integrated dimming to pursue a bright room without the unevenness, heat concerns and roof limitations associated with conventional skylights in the project brief. It also shows why daylighting belongs in the early coordination process: court use, visual comfort, roof construction, electric lighting and controls are interdependent.

It does not provide a transferable price, a guaranteed energy reduction, a measured glare result or proof that the same twelve-device arrangement will suit another building. The correct next step for a new facility is a project-specific daylight, lighting, structural and mechanical design followed by documented commissioning.
