Dangerous Wood to Avoid Burning in a Fire Pit

Avoid burning treated, painted, glued, or contaminated wood in a fire pit. Learn what EPA guidance says about hazardous materials, dry firewood, and smoke exposure.

The clearest fire-pit hazards are not a proven list of naturally toxic tree species. They are treated, painted, coated, glued, contaminated, or unsuitable wood products that can release harmful chemicals when burned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises against burning them—and notes that smoke from any wood fire contains harmful pollution.

What wood should you not burn in a fire pit?

Do not burn wood or other materials that may contain chemical treatments, coatings, adhesives, or contaminants. EPA guidance for backyard recreational fires identifies these materials as capable of releasing toxic or harmful chemicals:

  • Pressure-treated wood, including wood treated with preservatives.
  • Painted, coated, or stained wood.
  • Plywood, particle board, and wood with glue on or in it.
  • Construction waste, household trash, plastics, foam, and garbage.
  • Ocean driftwood, which may be contaminated with salt or other materials.
  • Wet, rotted, diseased, or moldy wood.
  • Green wood and yard waste, which can produce more smoke.

EPA specifically advises against burning pentachlorophenol-treated or creosote-treated wood in a residential setting because people may inhale toxic chemicals in the smoke and ash. See its pentachlorophenol guidance and creosote guidance. Follow local waste-management instructions for disposal; do not improvise by burning these materials.

For its full backyard-fire material guidance, see the EPA’s best wood-burning practices and backyard recreational fires pages.

Are some untreated tree species toxic when burned?

The EPA sources cited here do not establish a reliable list of untreated tree species that release toxins when burned. A plant’s poisonous sap or toxicity if eaten does not, by itself, prove that burning its wood creates a specific inhalation hazard. Avoid relying on unsourced species lists; the best-supported warning is to keep treated, painted, glued, contaminated, and otherwise unsuitable materials out of the fire pit.

Is it safe to burn ordinary firewood?

Ordinary, untreated firewood avoids the added hazards of preservatives, paint, coatings, and adhesives, but its smoke is not harmless. EPA describes wood smoke as a mixture of gases and fine particles. It identifies fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as the largest health threat from wood smoke and lists benzene, formaldehyde, acrolein, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons among its toxic air pollutants. Smoke can irritate the eyes and respiratory system, worsen asthma, and contribute to other health effects. Learn more in EPA’s wood smoke and health guidance.

Children and teenagers, older adults, and people with heart or lung disease—including asthma and COPD—are especially sensitive to particle pollution, according to EPA’s backyard recreational fires guidance.

How to choose and prepare firewood

Use seasoned, dry wood

EPA recommends seasoned firewood with moisture content of about 20 percent for a backyard recreational fire. Its best-practices guidance recommends seasoning wood for at least six months and checking moisture with a meter. These are practical moisture guidelines, not guarantees that the wood is free of chemicals. A moisture meter measures moisture; it does not detect preservatives, paint, glue, or contamination.

Check the material, not just how it burns

Only use wood whose source and condition you can identify. A dry piece can still be treated or coated, and burning cleanly does not prove that it is chemically safe. If you cannot tell whether wood is painted, treated, glued, or contaminated, leave it out of the fire pit.

Check air quality and local rules

Do not burn on air-quality alert days. Consider wind direction and nearby homes so smoke does not blow toward neighbors. Burn restrictions and disposal rules vary by location, so check current local requirements. EPA’s Burn Wise pages note that the program ran from 2009 to 2025 and is no longer updated after October 30, 2025; treat its recommendations as guidance and verify current local rules.

What can you use instead?

For a wood fire, use known, untreated, seasoned firewood and avoid the materials listed above. If your goal is to reduce harmful air pollutants from a backyard fire, EPA identifies natural gas and propane as cleaner alternatives to wood. A conversion kit may be an option for some existing fire pits, but compatibility and installation depend on the specific equipment; check the manufacturer’s requirements and local rules before converting.

EPA’s short instruction is: “Never burn green wood, construction waste, plastic, garbage, or yard waste.” Read the EPA backyard-fire recommendations alongside any local restrictions that apply to your property.
