Start by finding and reducing that source; ventilation can help remove moisture and odors, while filtration is only a supplement. A smell is a clue to investigate, not a reliable test of indoor air quality or proof of a health risk.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says, “For most indoor air quality problems in the home, source control is the most effective solution.” Here are everyday habits that can let odors persist—and practical ways to change them.
Source control, ventilation, and filtration compared
| Approach | What it does | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Source control | Reduces or removes the cause, such as fixing a leak or cleaning residue. | It may not remove emissions that continue during an activity unless the activity or source also changes. |
| Ventilation | Exhausts or dilutes moisture and pollutants, such as cooking emissions or shower moisture. | It does not repair a leak or remove moldy material. |
| Filtration | Can supplement source control and ventilation by treating some airborne particles. | A portable air cleaner or HVAC filter does not fix dampness or the source of a musty smell. |
Habit 1: Skipping kitchen exhaust while cooking
Cooking adds moisture and odors to indoor air, and cooking can also produce particles. When you cook without effective ventilation, odors may linger. The EPA recommends using a range hood while cooking, preferably one that vents outdoors, and leaving it on for 10–20 minutes afterward.
- Run the range hood while cooking and keep it on for 10–20 minutes afterward, following the EPA recommendation.
- If you do not have a hood, open windows or doors when it is safe and use a wall or ceiling exhaust fan if possible.
- Use back burners when practical, since they can improve capture by the hood.
- Clean cooking surfaces and appliances so crumbs and residue are less likely to heat or burn.
A hood helps manage emissions; it is not a guarantee that every cooking odor will disappear. Venting outdoors is preferable when possible.

Habit 2: Letting bathroom moisture and leaks persist
Showers add moisture to indoor air. Leaks around pipes, tubs, or sinks and condensation on cold surfaces can also create conditions for mold and musty odors. Use bathroom exhaust that vents outdoors when appropriate, address leaks or seepage, and watch for condensation.
The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. Treat this as practical moisture-management guidance, not a test that proves mold is present or absent. An indoor humidity gauge can help you monitor conditions, but it cannot locate a leak or diagnose a mold problem.

Habit 3: Leaving laundry, towels, or furnishings damp
Leaving wet items in a hamper or washing machine allows them to stay damp. The EPA advises storing clothes and towels clean and dry rather than leaving them wet. It also recommends drying water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth.
- Move wet laundry along instead of leaving it in the washer or a closed basket.
- Spread damp towels and other washable items so they can dry.
- Dry wet belongings and water-damaged areas promptly; investigate the source if materials keep getting damp.
If dampness persists or a musty smell returns, look for leaks, seepage, condensation, or another moisture source instead of relying on fragrance or surface cleaning alone.

Habit 4: Covering odors with fragrance or relying on an air cleaner
Fragrance does not remove the source of a persistent odor. The EPA cautions that even products labeled “natural,” “safe,” “odor-free,” or “unscented” can contain chemicals that may be problematic for some people, especially when overused or misused. Reduce odor-emitting practices and follow product directions rather than layering fragrance over an unresolved smell.
A portable air cleaner may supplement source control and ventilation, but it cannot correct a leak or the moisture that can lead to mold. If you are weighing an air cleaner against fixing the cause, address the cause first.

When an odor calls for investigation
A musty smell can suggest mold may be growing, according to the EPA, and should prompt an investigation for dampness. Smell alone does not establish the extent of mold, a specific mold type, or a health risk. Look for persistent moisture, leaks, seepage, condensation, or wet materials.
A sewage-like odor also does not diagnose a plumbing or septic failure by itself. The EPA identifies sewage backup, slow drains, gurgling, standing water, or damp spots near a septic system as signs that warrant investigation. Roof or vent-pipe conditions can also contribute to septic odors, so do not assume the cause based on smell alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my house smell musty?
A musty smell can suggest mold may be growing, but odor alone does not confirm mold or show its extent. Investigate dampness, leaks, seepage, condensation, and wet materials.
Why do cooking smells linger in the house?
Cooking creates moisture and odors. Use a range hood while cooking, preferably one that vents outdoors, and leave it on for 10–20 minutes afterward, as the EPA recommends.
How do I stop bad smells from coming back?
Find and reduce the source first. Address moisture and leaks, dry wet materials promptly, and use ventilation where appropriate. Fragrance and filtration do not replace source control.
Can an air purifier get rid of a musty smell?
A portable air cleaner can supplement source control and ventilation, but it cannot fix a leak or the dampness that may be driving a musty odor. Investigate and address moisture at its source.

Why does my house smell like sewage?
Odor alone cannot diagnose the cause. Check for warning signs such as backups, slow drains, gurgling, standing water, or damp spots near a septic system. The EPA recommends investigating these signs; roof or vent-pipe conditions can also contribute to septic odors.
