Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) increased operating profit sharply in preliminary third-quarter and nine-month 2026 results even as revenue declined. The explanation is a recovery in project margins: fewer active sites reduced sales, but management attributed the improvement to tighter operating and quality controls, stabilized or lower cost ratios, and stronger profitability in its architectural business. The rebound follows an unusually damaging 2025, so it demonstrates operational improvement without removing the company’s balance-sheet and credit risks.

The improvement began before the third quarter
The first-half results show that the third-quarter figures continue a broader margin-recovery pattern. Revenue in the first six months fell 8.2%, while operating profit rose 109%; the operating margin more than doubled from 5.4% to 12.2%. The nine-month operating margin increased by 6.9 percentage points. In practical terms, Daewoo E&C generated substantially more operating earnings from each unit of reported sales than it did in the comparable 2025 period.

Backlog supports future revenue visibility, but its value is not the same as future profit. Completion schedules, construction-cost inflation, provisions, financing conditions and the margin mix of individual contracts determine how much of that backlog turns into cash earnings.
Which projects could support Daewoo E&C’s next growth phase?
Management identified the Papua New Guinea liquefied natural gas (LNG) central processing facility and Mozambique Rovuma LNG as large overseas opportunities that were close to being won or becoming clearer. The cited reports described both as prospective awards; they had not established that either contract had been finally awarded at publication.

Reports attributed the losses to discounted sales of unsold apartments in provincial markets and higher costs at overseas sites, including costs associated with project changes. Recovering from provisions and loss recognition can produce a very large percentage improvement when the following period avoids a repeat of those charges, even if underlying construction demand has not fully recovered.
Is the profit rebound sustainable after last year’s loss?
The results provide evidence of better cost and project execution, but they do not by themselves prove that the 2026 margin level will persist. NICE Investors Service changed Daewoo E&C’s long-term credit-rating outlook from Stable to Negative. The agency cited approximately ₩595.0 billion in domestic bad-debt expenses and approximately ₩660.4 billion in expected additional overseas costs, and said that improving the financial structure would take considerable time.
An outlook change is a warning about the direction of credit risk, not the same thing as an immediate rating downgrade. It means the operating rebound must be accompanied by evidence that receivables, provisions and project-related obligations are being reduced; otherwise stronger profit and a large backlog may not translate into a stronger balance sheet.
