Arcot Road remains dug up because three programmes are occupying the same corridor: Chennai Metro Rail station construction, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) storm-water-drain (SWD) work and TNEB/TNPDCL electricity-cable shifting. The overlap has narrowed and roughened the 12-km State Highway 113 route between Nungambakkam and Porur, while monsoon water and sewage have made the worst sections harder and less safe to cross. A State Highways official has said relaying is expected in January 2027, but only after all departmental works finish; that is an assurance tied to conditions, not a guaranteed completion date.
Why is Arcot Road still dug up?
The disruption is a coordination problem rather than a single road project. Metro station structures, GCC drains and power-cable relocation have been progressing in overlapping work zones through Vadapalani and Virugambakkam. Until those underground and station works are substantially complete, a final, full-width road surface could be damaged or excavated again.

GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran said police have restricted Arcot Road construction to midnight–4am because daytime congestion leaves too little room for safe working. That shorter work window helps traffic flow but also slows the drain package. Deputy Mayor Magesh Kumar said the delay has worsened congestion on the busy stretch.
On the ground, SWD excavation has reduced the usable carriageway in Virugambakkam. Uneven temporary surfaces, potholes and sections awaiting relaying create bottlenecks. Illegal parking and wrong-side driving further consume the remaining width, according to traffic reporting.

How much of the storm-water-drain project is complete?
The September 2026 GCC update reported 7.20 km completed out of an 18-km Arcot Road SWD project valued at Rs 103 crore. That is about 40% of the drain package, even though the road itself is described as a 12-km arterial. The two lengths measure different things: the first is the highway corridor; the second is the planned drainage work associated with it.

The contrast explains why residents can see a citywide programme nearing completion while this corridor remains unfinished: the Arcot Road package is a lagging section inside the larger network.

How has rain made the disruption worse?
Vadapalani bus terminus sits lower than Arcot Road, so heavy rain collects there. During the latest downpours, sewage overflow mixed with stagnant rainwater, creating a hygiene problem as well as a transport obstacle. Ravi Shanker, a college student who regularly uses the terminus, said MTC passengers had to walk through the sewage-contaminated water to reach buses.
Earlier coordination reports said Metro work had damaged parts of the Arcot Road SWD system. Temporary pumping and alternative arrangements were being prepared for monsoon conditions, and GCC planned high-capacity pumps near Porur and Metro stations as contingency measures. Those measures can move accumulated water, but they do not substitute for a continuous, functioning drain network.

Is Arcot Road safe during the rain?
Risk is highest where open excavations, standing water and traffic are forced into the same narrow lane. In September 2026, an autorickshaw fell into an unfinished drain pit in Valasaravakkam; four people sustained minor injuries, according to a police-investigated report.
- Treat water-covered areas as potentially hiding pits, broken edges or sudden changes in depth.
- Keep clear of excavation barricades and do not use a flooded shoulder as a walking shortcut.
- Drivers should reduce speed before narrowed sections and avoid wrong-side manoeuvres that place vehicles beside open work zones.
- Passengers who cannot safely reach a stop should seek a visibly dry, supervised access route rather than stepping into opaque water.
The crash establishes a specific hazard at one location; it does not prove that every pothole or defect on the road was caused by one agency. Conditions can change after each rain event and each shift of a barricade.
How badly is traffic being affected?
A 2026 Times of India report estimated that at least 10,000 vehicles use the roughly 5-km Porur-junction to Vadapalani Metro-station stretch each day. Trips that once took about 15 minutes were reported to take nearly 40 minutes when narrowed lanes, work vehicles and bottlenecks combined.
Transport activist M Saravanan proposed temporary lane segregation and one-way movement at pinch points, with barricades arranged to preserve a minimum carriageway. He also called for full-width resurfacing after each section is finished instead of repeated patching. These are traffic-management recommendations, not announced completion measures.

When will Arcot Road be relaid?
A senior State Highways official said the road would be relaid in January 2027 after Metro, SWD and cable-shifting work is complete. The official also said pouring concrete during rain is not advisable. Because the date depends on other departments finishing first, January should be read as the latest stated target, not a fixed handover date.
The sequence matters: a permanent surface laid before heavy excavation ends could be cut open again for a drain connection, station utility or power cable. A final relaying schedule should therefore be judged against verified completion of all three work streams, not the calendar month alone.

Planning documents cited for the corridor route runoff toward the Virugambakkam Canal and the Cooum, while the Porur side is intended to feed toward the Adyar system. GCC also identified pump capacity near Porur and Metro stations so low-lying areas can be cleared when gravity drainage is overwhelmed.
