To cut a curve in wood, first draw the profile at full size, choose a saw and blade that can follow its tightest turn, then cut just outside the line and refine the edge. Use a compass for a constant-radius arc or a French curve or batten for a flowing curve. The best method depends on the curve, the stock, and the tools available.

Choose a layout method for the curve

Constant-radius arcs

For a circular arc, use a compass to mark the radius on the workpiece. A full-size layout makes the path visible throughout the cut and helps you identify where the turn is tightest.

Changing-radius curves

For a curve that changes direction or radius, draw a fair line with a French curve or a flexible batten. Check that the line flows smoothly before cutting; abrupt kinks are difficult to remove without changing the intended shape.

Choose the saw and blade

Situation Suitable approach Trade-off
Bookcase-style curves and a bandsaw is available Bandsaw Fine Woodworking describes a bandsaw as ideal for the curves in its bookcase project; its flat table supports control. Blade choice, setup, and cleanup still matter. Fine Woodworking
No bandsaw available Jigsaw The same project identifies a jigsaw as its next-best option. Cut outside the line and sand to the final profile. Fine Woodworking
Tight turn on a bandsaw Narrower blade; consider short relief cuts in waste A narrower blade can follow a tighter radius. Tooth set also affects the radius a blade can manage. For a fairer, smoother curve, use the widest blade that can still follow the turn. BCcampus Pressbooks
Making several identical profiles Template-guided bandsaw cutting A securely fastened template and suitable guide can help repeat a profile; setup and safe workholding are essential. BCcampus Pressbooks

Choose based on four factors: the curve’s tightest radius, the stock’s thickness and support, the equipment and setup available, and how much edge cleanup is acceptable. The cited sources do not establish universal maximum thicknesses or minimum radii for these tools.

Set up and cut the profile

  1. Mark the full-size line. Draw the arc or fair curve on the face of the workpiece, and make sure the waste side is clear.
  2. Choose a blade for the tightest turn. On a bandsaw, a tighter curve generally calls for a narrower blade. If the curve allows it, prefer the widest blade that can follow the line for a smoother, fairer cut. Blade tooth set also affects turning ability. BCcampus Pressbooks
  3. Secure and support the workpiece. Set up the saw according to its manual. For bandsaw work, keep the blade supported by correctly adjusted guides, with the upper guide close to the stock; ensure the table is square to the blade. Michael Fortune’s bandsaw guidance discusses these setup principles, but machine-specific settings should not be transferred blindly to a different saw. Fine Woodworking
  4. Feed steadily and keep hands clear. Follow the line without forcing the blade. Keep your hands visible and away from the blade, and arrange support for larger workpieces before starting.
  5. Leave material for refining. In its bookcase project, Fine Woodworking recommends cutting roughly 1/8 inch outside the line, then sanding away the remaining waste. That is a project-specific cleanup allowance, not a universal tolerance. Fine Woodworking

When a tight bandsaw turn binds

Short relief cuts from the edge into the waste can break up the offcut and reduce binding. Plan these cuts so they do not enter the finished profile. Avoid pulling the blade backward along a long curved kerf: the blade can bind or be pulled off its wheels. If backing out is necessary, follow the saw’s safe operating guidance and align the blade with the existing kerf rather than twisting it.

Smooth and fair the sawn edge

Use a sanding block shaped to match the curve, hand sanding, or an appropriate belt-sanding setup to remove sawmarks and bring the edge to the line. Match the tool to the profile: a sanding block should support the abrasive along the curve rather than flattening a hollow or rounding over a convex section. A spokeshave can also refine and fair suitable solid-wood curves. Fine Woodworking Fine Woodworking
