Wild rabbits can be charming visitors, but they may browse flowers and vegetables and gnaw young trees and shrubs. To protect plants that matter, start with physical barriers: a small-mesh fence around a bed or a cage or wrap around an individual plant. Repellents and habitat cleanup can help, but neither is as dependable on its own.

How to tell if rabbits are damaging your garden

Rabbits can affect both edible and ornamental plantings. They browse flowers and vegetables in spring and summer, and may turn to woody plants in fall and winter when other food is limited. Iowa State University Extension notes that cleanly snipped stems can be a clue: deer damage more often leaves ragged edges. A single clue is not proof, but it can help you decide what to inspect.

Look for damage on plants within reach and check young stems, shoots, and bark as well as leaves and flowers. There is no universal list of plants rabbits will avoid, and a plant that is left alone in one garden may be browsed in another.

How to protect gardens from rabbits

Fence a bed or vulnerable planting area

For a vegetable bed or a larger patch, Iowa State University Extension recommends a fence about 2 feet high made from chicken wire with mesh 1 inch or smaller, or 1/4-inch hardware cloth. These are practical home-garden recommendations, not results from a measured efficacy trial. Support the fence securely and close the gap at ground level; pins or garden staples can hold the bottom edge in place, while burying it is another option.

For more protection against digging, Oregon State University Extension Service recommends small-opening wire around woody plants, with the wire extending 4 to 6 inches below ground. It describes an outward-facing apron extending 6 to 12 inches as a stronger digging barrier. These dimensions are practical recommendations published in May 2026, not measured trial results.

Guard individual trees, shrubs, and valuable plants

If enclosing the whole garden is impractical, use a small-opening welded-wire cage, a homemade wire guard, or a commercial tree wrap around the plants most at risk. Oregon State Extension recommends these options for shrubs and trees. Keep the barrier secure without letting it press tightly against the plant, and inspect it as the plant grows so that it does not become constricting or leave new openings.

Snow can let rabbits reach higher parts of a plant than they could from bare ground. Check cages, wraps, and fence height after snow accumulates, and again when new growth changes what is exposed.

Keep rabbits from being enclosed inside the barrier

Before closing a fence around a garden, look for rabbits, burrows, or other signs that an animal may already be inside. An enclosure is meant to keep rabbits out; trapping one inside can leave it with little access to food or a way to leave. Oregon State Extension’s Ask Extension response also recommends clearing brush, debris, and tall weeds that offer nearby hiding cover. Cleanup can complement barriers, but may not protect plants rabbits continue to find.

Comparing rabbit-protection options

Approach Best use What it can do Limit or upkeep
Small-mesh wire fence A bed, patch, or vulnerable planting area Provides physical exclusion; this is the best-supported starting point in the cited extension guidance. Secure the ground edge with pins or burial, and check access after snow accumulates.
Individual wire cage or tree wrap A young tree, shrub, or especially valuable plant Protects selected plants without enclosing the whole garden. Inspect for gaps, adequate height, and room for plant growth.
Repellent Temporary or supplemental protection Unpleasant smells or tastes may discourage browsing in some settings. Effect can fade with sun, rain, irrigation, or new growth; reapplication may be needed, and some products are unsuitable for edible crops.
Habitat cleanup Garden edges with brush, tall weeds, or nearby hiding places Reduces nearby cover and can complement barriers. Alone, it may not protect plants rabbits continue to find.
Raised bed A future garden layout where suitable An Oregon State Extension response identifies beds at least 2 feet high as a possible option. It is not a quick fix for an existing season, and protection depends on circumstances and rabbit access.

Why repellents are not a sure fix

Rabbits may become accustomed to unpleasant smells or tastes. Weather, irrigation, and new plant growth can also reduce a product’s effect, so protection may require repeat applications. Check the label before applying any repellent near food crops: some products are not suitable for edible plants, and crop restrictions vary by product. Treat repellents as a possible supplement to barriers, not a guarantee of a rabbit-free garden.

Should you feed rabbits to keep them away from plants?

No. A University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension Ask Extension response from February 2026 says supplemental feeding of wildlife typically does more harm than good. For vulnerable trees and shrubs, it recommends barriers rather than trying to divert rabbits with food.

What to expect from a rabbit barrier

No single fence, plant list, or repellent guarantees that rabbits will never reach a garden. The practical goal is to protect the plants most at risk and check that the barrier still works as conditions change. The recommendations here come from United States home-garden extension guidance. Rabbit-management law and ecological effects can differ by location; for example, GOV.UK’s rabbit-control guidance applies to England and notes that some habitats and species depend on rabbit grazing.
