A shelf inside a shower or on a directly wet tiled tub surround is different: do not fasten a conventional wood corbel shelf through the tile and waterproofing unless a qualified professional has designed a compatible penetration and resealing detail.
This guide covers two ways to make the curve, a dry-area build sequence, and safer options for tiled wet areas. The shelf’s load must travel through the shelf and corbels into suitable wall structure; a decorative curve or adhesive alone does not establish support capacity.
First decide where the shelf will go

Tile is a finish, not the waterproofing layer. A penetration can compromise the moisture-management assembly behind it, so treat directly wet tiled walls as a separate design problem.
Choose how to make the curve
Route A: cut a curved front edge
Use this route when the shelf is flat on top and only its plan-view front edge bows or forms a demi-lune. Make a full-size template from cardboard, hardboard, or paper, check its fit, then transfer the curve to a stable shelf blank. Cut just outside the line and fair the edge with sanding before rounding exposed edges. Select the blank for its exposure and protect cut panel edges; extended moisture exposure can roughen panel surfaces and swell plywood or OSB.

Route B: form a curved fascia
Use this route when the shelf has a continuous vertical curved front skin rather than only a curved cut edge. Radius or bending plywood is made for curved components, but bend direction and product instructions matter. It must be formed over a suitable rigid form and laminated or otherwise assembled as specified to retain its shape; it is not automatically a self-supporting shelf.
Do not rely on a generic minimum bend radius. The achievable curve depends on the exact product, thickness, bend direction, and number of layers. Check the manufacturer’s product information before laying out the form.
Materials and tools
Choose materials and hardware for the shelf design, expected contents, room exposure, wall construction, and hardware-maker instructions. This is a modular list, not a universal cut list or fastener recipe.

- Shelf stock: solid wood, furniture-grade plywood, or a stable core with a suitable finished face.
- For a formed fascia: the specified radius or bending plywood and a rigid form or template.
- Two or more corbels or brackets sized for the shelf depth and intended contents.
- Mechanical fasteners appropriate to the confirmed wall construction and the support manufacturer’s instructions.
- Adhesive only where appropriate for laminating a fascia or assembling wood parts; not as the sole support for a loaded wall shelf.
- A finish system suited to the selected wood and room exposure.
- Layout, cutting, sanding, drilling, and wall-location tools appropriate to the materials and substrate.
Do not choose fastener locations from assumed stud spacing. Many exterior walls have studs 16 inches on center, while 24-inch spacing also occurs; walls may instead be steel-framed, masonry, or backed differently. Find the actual attachment structure before choosing locations and hardware.
Build a shelf for a dry wall area
- Define the location and contents. Decide whether the shelf will hold light décor, spice jars, toiletries, or heavier items. The intended load affects the support design. If the wall type, framing, or load is uncertain, resolve that before buying fasteners.
- Lay out the curve full size. Make and check a template before cutting the shelf stock. Confirm that the depth and curve leave room for the corbel profile.
- Make the shelf top. For a simple bowed front, cut and smooth the curve from a blank. For a wrapped fascia, form the specified bending plywood on a form and laminate it as directed so it retains the curve after release.
- Make or fit the corbels. Dry-fit each support beneath the shelf. A shaped wood corbel can be decorative, but its appearance does not establish a load rating.
- Locate attachment structure. Mark verified studs, blocking, or appropriate masonry fastening points. Do not infer their positions from a nominal spacing chart.
- Install the corbels mechanically. Keep the shelf level and use fasteners suited to the confirmed substrate and the hardware maker’s instructions. The supports and their fastening must resist the turning action created by shelf contents.
- Attach the shelf to the supports. Use a suitable joinery or fastening method and seat the shelf fully on every corbel. Recheck level and inspect for rocking or gaps.
- Finish and cure. Sand, remove dust, and apply the selected finish according to its instructions, including its cure time before loading. Protect exposed end grain and cut plywood edges from humidity and occasional splashes.
- Load gradually and inspect. Start with the intended contents, then periodically check the corbel-to-wall fasteners, shelf joints, finish wear, and any movement or swelling.
Corbels, fastening, and load limits
There is no universal safe weight rating for a custom shelf. Capacity depends on the shelf, its depth, the number and design of supports, the wall substrate, fasteners, attachment details, and loading conditions. Use a tested bracket rating only within the manufacturer’s stated installation conditions; otherwise, do not present an assumed load as a guaranteed capacity.
Weight on a wall shelf creates an outward turning action at its supports. A shelf bonded directly to a wall can put the bond in cleavage loading; adhesive, tape, or decorative finish is not a substitute for a designed mechanical support path. Corbels and brackets must be suitable for the shelf and securely attached to verified structure.

If the wall construction or expected contents call for support you cannot verify, consult a qualified professional. Do not use a shelf as a step, seat, or handhold unless it was specifically designed and installed for that purpose.
Moisture, finish, and care
For an ordinary bathroom wall outside direct spray, treat the finish as moisture-resistant maintenance, not as a way to make wood suitable inside a shower. Seal exposed surfaces and especially cut edges, follow the finish maker’s directions, and renew the finish if it wears. Extended moisture exposure can damage panel surfaces and cause swelling.
A shelf near a kitchen backsplash or tiled splash zone needs the same distinction: a dry wall area is not the same as a water-exposed tiled assembly. If the shelf is within a directly wet tiled area, use the wet-area approach below rather than treating a clear finish as waterproofing.

For showers and directly wet tiled walls
Do not fasten a conventional wood corbel shelf through a shower’s tile and waterproofing layer unless a qualified professional has designed that exact penetration and resealing detail for the installed system. Tile itself is not inherently waterproof, and the wall’s waterproofing system must remain intact.
Consider a purpose-made tiled-wall shelf designed to integrate with the selected assembly. For example, Schluter documents its SHELF-E as a corner shelf for tiled walls, including a CURVE design, with anchoring tabs that integrate in grout joints. Its instructions caution against damaging the waterproofing layer behind the tile. This is an example of a product category, not a claim that it suits every tile layout, wall system, or region. Follow the chosen system’s installation literature.
For a horizontal tiled shelf or niche shelf in a wet location, provide drainage so water does not pool. Schluter’s niche-shelf guidance describes raising the back or setting tile to create slope; follow the selected system’s instructions for the actual assembly.
