Healthcare tile selection is a performance exercise, not a colour exercise. Specify the wall or floor system for its traffic, moisture, cleaning regime, slip exposure, substrate and maintenance plan, then obtain current, product-specific evidence before approval. CTD’s former architectural business is now represented by Parkside Architectural Tiles within Topps Group; Parkside is the current route for project specifications, technical support, samples and product enquiries.

What happened to CTD Architectural Tiles?

CTD’s current contact information states: “As part of Topps Group, the former CTD Architectural (CTDA) business is now represented by Parkside Architectural Tiles, the Group’s specialist architectural and commercial tile brand.” For a hospital, clinic, dental practice, care home or laboratory project, treat that statement as the practical starting point: send the commercial enquiry to Parkside, and ask for documentation for the exact proposed products and areas rather than relying on older CTDA references.

CTD Group describes its wider role as sourcing and supplying tile designs for interior and architectural markets on its About Us page. That background explains the former brand’s design remit, but the current contact page is the stronger evidence for today’s enquiry route. Request named contacts, current datasheets, declarations, test reports, sample availability and installation guidance as part of the project record.

Start with the healthcare brief, not a tile catalogue

Write an area schedule before selecting a finish. A public entrance, inpatient corridor, operating-theatre support room, shower room and staff kitchen have different combinations of traffic, wetness, contamination risk, wheeled loads and cleaning frequency. A product that works on a dry wall may be unsuitable on a wet floor; a floor with an appropriate slip classification may still fail if the substrate, joints or cleaning process are wrong.

Questions the area schedule should answer

  • Is the tile on a wall, floor, upstand, skirting detail or worktop splashback?
  • Will the surface be dry, intermittently wet, continuously wet, or exposed to gradients and drainage?
  • What traffic, trolley loads, impact and abrasion should the installation withstand?
  • What cleaning agents, contact times, temperatures and mechanical methods are required by the facility’s infection-prevention team?
  • Can the existing or proposed wall and floor construction support the tile weight and movement requirements?
  • How will movement joints, penetrations, corners, falls, drains and transitions be detailed?

Use the answers to create a product schedule that names the tile, adhesive, grout, sealant, primer, substrate preparation, joint widths and cleaning method. Have the design team and the infection-prevention, estates and facilities representatives sign off the assumptions before ordering.

Glazed ceramic and porcelain: what the available guidance supports

CTD’s general Buying Tiles Guide says that a glazed ceramic tile’s glaze provides physical and hygienic protection. That is a description of a material feature, not evidence that a tile prevents infection, kills pathogens in service or satisfies a healthcare standard. The clinical environment still depends on detailing, cleaning, ventilation, water management and operational controls.

The same guide describes porcelain as durable and low porosity and says it is suitable for domestic and most commercial applications. “Most commercial” is not the same as “every healthcare area.” Confirm water absorption, wear class, chemical resistance, dimensions, shade variation and application limits for the named product. A porcelain body does not remove the need to validate the complete floor or wall build-up.

Selection axis What CTD guidance says What the project team still has to establish
Glazed ceramic Glaze is described as physically and hygienically protective. Whether the exact tile, glaze, joint layout and cleaning regime suit the named healthcare area; no clinical infection-prevention claim is established.
Porcelain Described as durable and low porosity, with suitability for domestic and most commercial applications. Product-specific performance, traffic class, slip data, chemical compatibility, substrate limits and approvals for the intended clinical space.
Wall application CTD advises checking suitability and using professional contractors. Wall load capacity, background flatness, moisture movement, fixing pattern, edge details and access for future repairs.
Floor application Choose with regard to slip-resistance information and the environment. Wetness, gradients, footwear, wheeled traffic, drainage, cleaning chemicals and the applicable project specification.

Specify floor safety from use conditions and slip data

CTD explains R ratings as a reference for floor slip resistance and notes their use in commercial and public settings. An R value should be read as test information, not as a universal “healthcare rating.” Select against the actual environment: standing water, cleaning residue, slope, barefoot or shod traffic, mobility aids, trolley wheels and the consequences of a fall.

A practical slip-resistance check

  1. Map exposure: identify entrances, wash-down zones, showers, sluice rooms, kitchens, ramps and areas where condensation or spills are likely.
  2. Define users and movement: record footwear, mobility aids, bed and food trolleys, turning areas and expected traffic intensity.
  3. Request test evidence: ask Parkside for the current slip-resistance report and the test method for each proposed tile, including any stated conditions or limitations.
  4. Coordinate falls risk: have the architect, health-and-safety lead and facilities team agree the required performance for each zone rather than selecting from appearance.
  5. Review installation effects: verify that grout joints, falls, lippage, cleaning residue and later wear will not undermine the intended performance.

Do not infer slip performance from a matt appearance, texture or a marketing adjective. If a value or test method is not present in the current technical file, mark it as not established and resolve it before specification.

Match tile construction to each healthcare room

Clinical and public walls

For walls, focus on cleanability, impact exposure, moisture, junctions and repair strategy. Confirm that the wall background can carry the tile and adhesive system, especially over boards, existing finishes or service zones. Detail internal and external corners, coved or hygienic skirtings where required by the brief, pipe penetrations and interfaces with doors, ironmongery and clinical equipment. A smooth tile face does not compensate for an open joint, cracked sealant or inaccessible ledge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Corridors and circulation floors

Corridors combine high traffic, turning loads and frequent cleaning. Obtain the tile’s wear and loading information, then coordinate it with trolley wheel types, thresholds, expansion joints and replacement access. Agree a spare-tile quantity and batch-control method so future repairs do not create unacceptable shade differences.

Wet rooms, bathrooms and sluice areas

Wet areas need coordinated falls, drainage, waterproofing, movement joints and a floor surface selected for the wet condition. Confirm the complete tanking and tiling system, not only the tile. Ask for compatibility between adhesive, grout, sealant and cleaning chemicals, and require a mock-up where junctions or gradients are difficult to inspect after handover.

Procedure rooms and specialist spaces

Where rooms have unusual chemicals, heat, disinfection cycles, radiation equipment or stringent contamination controls, obtain the facility’s written performance requirements first. The available CTD pages do not establish a universal healthcare approval or a clinical validation for any tile range, so the named product must be checked against the project’s governing standards and risk assessment.

Choose grout, sealant and joints as part of the system

CTD lists BAL Micromax 3 ECO flexible wall and floor grout with Microban for walls and floors, including wet areas. The listing describes built-in Microban antimicrobial protection and installation properties. Treat that as the product maker’s stated feature, not proof of infection reduction or a clinical hygiene guarantee. Confirm joint width, movement requirements, curing, chemical resistance and compatibility with the selected tile and facility cleaning protocol.

For perimeter and movement joints, CTD lists BAL Micromax Grout-Effect Sealant as a waterproof sealant with built-in antimicrobial protection. Use a sealant only where the design requires a flexible joint, and verify substrate, primer, joint geometry, colour, replacement method and compatibility. Do not fill movement joints with rigid grout simply to create a continuous appearance.

Installation controls to record

  • Substrate moisture, strength, flatness and preparation method.
  • Adhesive classification, open time, coverage and bed thickness.
  • Tile batch, shade, calibre, layout datum and approved sample panel.
  • Joint width, movement-joint locations, edge restraints and sealant details.
  • Protection, curing and the point at which cleaning or traffic may begin.
  • Photographs and inspection records before areas are concealed by fittings.

CTD’s buying guidance recommends checking suitability and using professional contractors. In a healthcare project, that means a tiler who can demonstrate experience with the specified system and who will follow the manufacturer’s current method statement rather than improvise on site.

Build a cleaning plan that distinguishes cleaning from disinfection

Ultra Tile ProClean Porcelain Tile & Stone Cleaner is listed by CTD as a pH-neutral concentrate for general tile and stone cleaning, with instructions to check suitability and directions. A general-purpose cleaner is not a healthcare disinfectant. The facility’s infection-prevention team must define the disinfectant, dilution, contact time, rinsing, personal protective equipment and frequency, while the tile and joint manufacturers confirm material compatibility.

Write the operating procedure before handover

  1. List approved products by chemical name, concentration and supplier, including an escalation route for spills or unknown substances.
  2. State the order of work: remove debris, apply the approved solution, observe contact time, rinse if required, remove standing water and allow drying.
  3. Define equipment, colour coding, mop or machine type, water-change frequency and safe access controls.
  4. Set inspection points for grout erosion, cracked tiles, failed sealant, lippage, ponding and staining.
  5. Record trial-cleaning results on the approved sample or mock-up before rolling the method across the building.

Never increase chemical strength because a surface looks dirty, and never assume an antimicrobial additive permits less frequent cleaning. Any change to the operating protocol should be checked against current manufacturer instructions and the healthcare provider’s infection-control policy.

Send this information in sequence

  1. Identify the project: name the facility, country, stage, procurement route and responsible design and estates contacts.
  2. Describe every application: separate walls, dry floors, wet floors, ramps, stairs, thresholds and specialist rooms.
  3. State performance needs: durability, slip-resistance evidence, dimensions, colour, reflectance, cleanability, chemical exposure and repair expectations.
  4. Request the evidence pack: current datasheets, installation instructions, declarations, test reports, cleaning guidance, sample availability and any healthcare project references.
  5. Check the complete system: ask for compatible adhesive, grout, sealant and movement-joint recommendations, with limitations clearly stated.
  6. Approve a sample: inspect colour, texture, lippage tolerance, joints, corners, drains and cleaning response in a representative mock-up.
  7. Freeze the schedule: record product codes, batch controls, approved alternates, spares and the document revision used for construction.

If a requested healthcare performance claim is not supported by current product-specific evidence, leave it out of the specification and escalate the gap to the project’s technical and clinical reviewers. A supplier’s general statement about porcelain, glaze or antimicrobial protection cannot substitute for a named test or approval tied to the actual use.

Common failure modes and their fixes

Failure mode Why it causes trouble Preventive action
Selecting by colour and texture alone The tile may lack the required slip, wear, chemical or substrate performance. Complete the area schedule and request product-specific evidence before approval.
Calling a grout antimicrobial feature “infection-proof” It overstates a listing claim and can mislead clinical decision-makers. Describe the feature accurately and retain normal cleaning and infection-control procedures.
Using a household cleaner as a disinfectant Cleaning power, disinfection efficacy and material compatibility are different questions. Use the facility-approved chemical protocol and check it with the tile-system manufacturers.
Ignoring movement and penetrations Rigid or poorly detailed joints crack, admit moisture and become difficult to clean. Coordinate movement joints, flexible sealant, falls, drains and service interfaces on drawings and mock-ups.
Assuming every porcelain tile suits a clinic Porcelain’s low porosity and durability do not establish suitability for every clinical zone. Validate the exact product, application, traffic, slip condition and approvals.
Relying on old CTDA contact details Enquiries can be misdirected and technical documents may be out of date. Use the current Parkside route stated on CTD’s contact page and date the documents received.

Handover and long-term facilities control

Make the tile installation maintainable by handing over more than a product code. Provide an indexed schedule showing room, tile, batch, adhesive, grout, sealant, joint widths, movement-joint locations, cleaning chemicals, inspection frequency and spare stock location. Include approved photographs of difficult junctions and the manufacturer documents current at handover.

Facilities teams should log defects by type and location: loose or drummy tiles, cracked grout, failed perimeter sealant, staining, ponding, lippage and damaged transitions. Repair with the approved system and record any change in batch or shade. If the cleaning protocol, disinfectant or room use changes, reassess chemical compatibility and slip performance instead of assuming the original design remains valid.

A concise decision checklist

  • Has each room been assigned a wall or floor performance brief?
  • Is the proposed tile’s current technical documentation available for the exact product code?
  • Has slip-resistance evidence been reviewed against wetness, slope, footwear and traffic?
  • Are substrate capacity, waterproofing, movement joints, falls and drainage designed?
  • Are adhesive, grout and sealant compatible and specified as one system?
  • Has the infection-prevention team approved the cleaning and disinfection procedure?
  • Has a representative mock-up been inspected and cleaned before full installation?
  • Are Parkside’s current documents, samples, alternates and project contacts recorded?
  • Are spares, batch controls, inspection intervals and repair instructions included at handover?

CTD’s material guidance is useful for framing the conversation about glazed ceramic, porcelain, slip information and installation, but it does not by itself certify a healthcare environment. The reliable route is a room-by-room brief, a complete compatible system, documented cleaning controls and current technical confirmation from Parkside Architectural Tiles for the products actually specified.
