A successful hen house is sized for the flock you actually keep, placed on high, well-drained ground, ventilated without drafts, and built so predators cannot reach the birds. Plan daily tasks—collecting eggs, carrying feed and water, removing litter, catching a hen, and reaching electrical components—before choosing materials or drawing walls. The best design is not a universal plan; it is one adapted to your birds, climate, site, local rules, and whether the flock will use a secure run or spend time outside.

Start with the flock, site, and local rules

Write down the decisions that control every later measurement:

  • Flock: Count the hens and any other birds you will house, note their approximate size, and decide whether the flock may grow. Extra capacity is easier to build in at the start than to add later.
  • Access: Decide whether birds will use a predator-resistant run, supervised outdoor space, or no outdoor area. Space recommendations change with that choice.
  • House type: A fixed coop can be more durable and easier to connect to utilities. A portable house or chicken tractor can move birds onto fresh ground but must be light enough to relocate and strong enough to survive repeated handling.
  • Site: Check drainage, prevailing weather, shade, winter sun, vehicle or wheelbarrow access, and the distance to feed storage and a water source. High ground that does not collect runoff is preferable.
  • Neighbors and authorities: Confirm animal limits, setbacks, nuisance rules, permits, and any restrictions on roosters before construction. These requirements vary by jurisdiction and can change.
  • Chores: Mark where you will stand to open doors, lift nest-box lids, sweep litter, refill feeders and drinkers, remove a sick bird, and service lights or fans. A theoretically efficient plan that is awkward to clean will become difficult to manage.

Sketch the house and run together. Include a route for bringing in bedding and taking out soiled litter, and leave enough clearance to work safely around doors and gates.

How much space does each hen need?

There is no single minimum that applies to every breed, climate, or management system. Two university Extension recommendations use different assumptions, so keep the source and the type of space attached to each number.

Source and situation Indoor area Outdoor/run area How to use the figure
Oregon State University Extension, birds with outdoor access At least 3 sq. ft. per bird Not stated as a separate figure on the cited guidance Applies when birds have usable outdoor access; provide more room when possible.
Oregon State University Extension, birds without outdoor access 8–10 sq. ft. per bird None The entire active area is indoors, so the allowance is substantially larger.
NC State Extension 2.5–3.5 sq. ft. per bird 4–5 sq. ft. per bird in the run These are separate indoor and run allowances, not one combined number.

For example, a six-hen flock with outdoor access would have at least 18 square feet of indoor area under the Oregon State figure. Using NC State’s ranges, the same flock would need 15–21 square feet inside plus 24–30 square feet in the run. Those calculations illustrate the assumptions; they do not override local welfare rules or the needs of large breeds, birds confined by weather, or a flock that may expand.

More room can reduce crowding, wet litter, bullying, and competition at feeders and nest boxes. If winter weather, illness, predator pressure, or local rules may keep birds indoors for long periods, design toward the larger allowance rather than the smallest one.

Choose a fixed coop or portable housing

Neither format is universally superior. Match the structure to your land, routine, and ability to move it safely.

Consideration Fixed coop Portable house or chicken tractor
Site and pasture access Stays in one prepared, drained location; convenient where birds use a permanent run. Can be moved to fresh ground, but the route and destination must be prepared first.
Durability Allows heavier framing, a permanent floor, and stronger weatherproofing. Must balance strength with a weight and shape that people or wheels can handle.
Cleaning Can include full-height doors, a dedicated clean-out panel, and a deep, accessible floor. Smaller dimensions may limit reach; design removable panels and service points before building.
Utilities Easier to provide protected lighting, a fan, or other electrical access. Needs weather-safe temporary connections or a design that works without fixed power.
Expansion Run and interior can be extended if the foundation and roof are planned for it. Expansion usually means another module or a larger replacement.
Predator control Allows a deeply secured perimeter and a roofed run. Every move creates a new edge that must sit tightly against the ground; lock birds inside at night if the moved run is not secure.

Site and floor design: keep the house dry

Moisture is an early warning that the building or its management needs attention. Choose a high point with drainage away from the doors, and keep roof runoff from flowing into the run. A floor raised above surrounding soil can help prevent splash and standing water. Seal obvious leaks while preserving intentional ventilation openings.

Use a surface that can be swept or scraped without trapping waste in cracks. Place drinkers where spilled water will not soak nesting material, and inspect the area after heavy rain. Damp litter, persistent condensation, or an ammonia smell means the house is not exchanging enough air, is admitting water, or is holding too many birds for the available space.

Ventilation without drafts

Ventilation removes moisture and stale air while keeping birds out of direct air currents. Oregon State Extension describes the purpose precisely: “Ventilation removes ammonia fumes, carbon dioxide and moisture from coops and brings in fresh air.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use high and low openings

Provide protected openings near the roof to let warm, humid air escape and lower openings to admit replacement air. Cross-ventilation works when air can move through the building without blowing directly across roosts. Cover every opening with strong predator-resistant mesh, and make shutters or panels adjustable for severe weather.

When a fan helps

Passive vents or windows are adequate for most backyard coops. A fan can help during especially warm or humid periods, but it should move air above or around the birds rather than point a cold stream at them. Protect wiring from pecking, dust, and moisture, and provide a safe way to disconnect power for cleaning.

Seasonal checks

  • On cold mornings, look for condensation on the roof or walls and smell for ammonia at bird level.
  • During hot weather, verify that vents are not blocked and that the run has shade and drinking water.
  • After storms, check that wind-driven rain has not entered through vents, doors, or roof joints.

Predator-proof the house and run

Protection has to cover doors, walls, the roof, and the ground edge. Strong mesh is more reliable than light poultry netting for stopping determined predators. Fasten it securely to framing, close gaps around hinges and corners, and use latches that raccoons or other animals cannot manipulate easily. Cover the run from above where aerial predators are a concern.

Build an underground or apron barrier

Two Extension approaches describe the ground defense:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Oregon State Extension recommends burying run fencing 6 inches to 1 foot.
  • The Cooperative Extension Small and Backyard Poultry overview describes burying wire at least 12 inches and turning an approximately 6-inch section outward as a ground toe.

Soil type, digging predators, and the permanence of the run should determine which detail you use. A buried edge resists animals that dig straight down; an outward apron makes them encounter wire as they start digging beside the fence. Anchor an apron so it stays flat and does not create a trip hazard. Inspect the perimeter after erosion, mowing, or moving a portable unit.

Night security

If the run is not fully secure, shut birds inside the house before dark. Doors should close completely, and the threshold should not leave a gap large enough for a paw or snout. A small, well-latched pop door is easier to secure than a loose panel.

Arrange roosts, nest boxes, feed, and water

Roosts

Give each bird enough perch length to settle without crowding. Oregon State Extension suggests 5–10 inches of roost pole per bird; NC State suggests 9–10 inches of perch per bird. These ranges differ, so use the larger allowance for big birds, cold conditions, or a flock that tends to pile together. Provide a stable, easy-to-clean perch with no sharp edges, and allow birds to reach it without landing in drinkers or nest boxes.

Nest boxes

Both sources place the ratio at roughly one box for every four to five hens: Oregon State says about one per four birds, while NC State says one per four or five hens. Put boxes off the ground and below the roosts so birds are less likely to sleep and defecate in them. Locate them where you can collect eggs without entering a crowded corner, and make lids or doors removable for cleaning.

Feed and water

Keep feed dry and protected from wild animals. Put drinkers on a stable stand or other surface that limits litter contamination, while ensuring every bird can reach water. Leave enough working clearance to refill both without stepping over roosts or disturbing nesting hens.

Design for maintenance and safe access

Maintenance access is a structural requirement, not an afterthought. Include a human-sized entry or a clean-out door, depending on the house size, and make the opening wide enough for the tools and containers you will actually use. Plan a direct route to nest boxes for egg collection, and avoid placing a perch where a falling door or lid could injure a bird.

  1. Lay out the footprint: Mark indoor area, run area, doors, nest boxes, roosts, vents, and utility routes on paper or the ground.
  2. Prepare drainage: Establish the high, well-drained pad and direct roof runoff away from the flock’s living area.
  3. Build the shell: Frame walls and roof for the local weather, then close cracks and protect all openings with strong mesh.
  4. Install predator defenses: Add door hardware, a roof or overhead mesh where needed, and either the buried fence edge or an outward apron.
  5. Add interior fittings: Install roosts, nest boxes, feeders, drinkers, and removable surfaces while the space is still easy to reach.
  6. Finish ventilation and utilities: Fit high and low vents, guards, shutters, and any fan or light wiring. Keep electrical components inaccessible to birds and protected from water.
  7. Test before stocking: Open every door, remove every clean-out panel, walk the run perimeter, test latches, and look for sharp edges, trapped spaces, leaks, and drafts at roost height.

Common design failures and corrections

Symptom Likely design issue Correction
Damp litter or ammonia odor Insufficient air exchange, leaks, poor drainage, or too little space. Unblock or enlarge protected vents, repair leaks, improve drainage, clean wet bedding, and reassess stocking density.
Birds avoid a roost or pile in one corner Perch is unstable, exposed to a draft, too short, or difficult to reach. Stabilize or reposition it, remove direct airflow, and provide the source-recommended length per bird.
Dirty or broken eggs Nest boxes are under the roosts, too few, exposed, or hard to clean. Keep boxes below roosts, add capacity toward one per four hens, and improve collection and clean-out access.
Digging along the run No buried edge or apron, or erosion has opened a gap. Repair the perimeter and extend the barrier according to the buried or outward-toe approach suited to the site.
Overheating in warm weather Blocked vents, inadequate shade, or air directed poorly. Open high vents, provide shade and water, and use a safely guarded fan when passive airflow is insufficient.
Daily chores feel difficult Doors, feeders, nests, or utility points were placed without a keeper’s working clearance. Move fittings, enlarge access panels, or redesign before adding more birds.

Finished-coop inspection checklist

  • Indoor and run areas were calculated from the flock size and the chosen Extension assumptions.
  • The plan allows for expected flock growth and periods when birds may be confined indoors.
  • The site is high enough to drain, and roof water is directed away from doors and litter.
  • High and low vents provide fresh air without a draft at roost level.
  • Dampness and ammonia can be detected quickly during routine checks.
  • Doors, pop openings, corners, and mesh are tight and securely latched.
  • The run has a roof or overhead protection where aerial predators are present.
  • The ground edge uses a buried barrier or outward apron appropriate to local soil and predator pressure.
  • Roost length and nest-box count follow the selected source guidance, with boxes below roosts.
  • Feed, water, eggs, litter, birds, and electrical components are reachable without unsafe contortions.
  • All surfaces are smooth enough to clean, and removable panels have been tested.
  • Local animal, setback, permit, and neighbor requirements have been confirmed before birds arrive.

The Cooperative Extension overview summarizes the design test well: “Poultry housing should provide protection from the weather, protection from predators, adequate space, easy access to feed and water, sufficient light, and adequate ventilation.” Treat each item as a build requirement, then adjust dimensions and materials to your flock and location rather than copying a plan designed for someone else’s conditions.
