There is no universal ranking of the eight biggest plug loads. A refrigerator that cycles all year, a space heater used for a few cold hours, and a television left in standby have very different combinations of wattage, operating time and controls. The most useful ranking is therefore a starting hypothesis: measure your own equipment and let annual kilowatt-hours (kWh) determine what matters most.

In a typical home or building, the groups below account for the largest opportunities. Refrigeration, laundry, cooking and dishwashing together represent more than 200 terawatt-hours (TWh), or 14% of annual residential site electricity, in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building Technologies Office summary. DOE also estimates miscellaneous electric loads at 20–40% of building electricity use, depending on the building and its equipment.

How to identify a real energy hog

Compare every device on six dimensions rather than looking only at the label on its plug:

  • Active watts: the power drawn while the device is doing its job.
  • Runtime and duty cycle: hours per day, cycles per week and how often thermostats or compressors switch on.
  • Standby watts: power used while the device appears off but remains connected.
  • Standby hours: the long periods during which a small draw can accumulate.
  • Controllability: whether timers, occupancy sensors, automatic shutdown or an advanced power strip can turn the load off safely.
  • Replacement efficiency: whether a newer ENERGY STAR product or equipment meeting federal low-standby guidance uses less energy.

Annual energy is calculated as watts × hours ÷ 1,000. A high-wattage appliance used briefly can consume less over a year than a low-wattage device that runs continuously. Nameplate watts are only a maximum or operating-point value, so a plug-in meter is the best way to settle close calls.

  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

The eight plug-load groups most likely to dominate

Load group Typical energy pattern What determines annual kWh Best first control
Refrigerators and freezers Moderate-to-high active draw, cycling 24/7 Efficiency, size, temperature, door openings and ambient heat Maintain seals and temperatures; replace with an efficient model when practical
Laundry and cooking appliances High power during heat-intensive cycles, little standby Loads per week, cycle length and heat demand Reduce unnecessary cycles and use efficient settings
Computers, monitors and networking Active draw plus long idle and sleep periods Hours occupied, number of displays and sleep behavior Enable sleep and automatic shutdown
Televisions and audio/video Active viewing plus standby or instant-on draw Screen size, efficiency, viewing hours and standby features Disable instant-on and switch off connected groups
Printers, copiers and imaging equipment Ready and sleep states can last all day Duty cycle, warm-up behavior and fleet size Use deep sleep and scheduled shutdown
Water coolers and water heaters Continuous heating or cooling of a reservoir Set point, insulation, ambient temperature and usage Use schedules or occupancy controls where safe
Space heaters and portable high-wattage devices Very high instantaneous draw while operating Hours of heating, thermostat cycling and insulation Heat the occupied zone efficiently; use timers
Always-on miscellaneous electronics and chargers Small individual draws multiplied across many devices Number connected, standby watts and hours per day Use switched or advanced power strips and unplug idle chargers

1. Refrigerators and freezers

Refrigeration belongs near the top of a household list because compressors and fans cycle throughout the year. DOE groups refrigeration with laundry, cooking and dishwashing as more than 200 TWh and 14% of annual residential site electricity. A refrigerator may not draw its rated power continuously, but its duty cycle never truly ends.

Age, cabinet size, door openings, condenser cleanliness, gasket condition and room temperature all affect the result. A second refrigerator or freezer in a garage can use more energy than its owner expects because high surrounding temperatures make the compressor work harder. Measure the appliance over several days or a full week so the compressor cycles are represented, then convert the meter’s kWh reading to an annual estimate. Check seals and temperature settings before replacing equipment; when replacement is due, compare the product’s certified annual energy use rather than just its purchase price.

2. Laundry and cooking appliances

Clothes dryers, washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, kettles and toasters can draw substantial power while operating. Heat is the key distinction: a dryer, oven or electric kettle may use far more power during a short cycle than an electronic device uses all day, but the appliance’s annual impact depends on how often it runs and how much heat each cycle requires.

Track loads per week and cycle settings. Avoid running a partly full dishwasher or dryer, use moisture-sensing or eco cycles when they meet the task, and reserve high-heat settings for situations that need them. For cooking, match the pan and appliance to the job and avoid preheating longer than necessary. A meter can reveal whether a frequently used small appliance, rather than a rarely used large one, is the larger annual consumer in your home.

3. Computers, monitors and networking equipment

Desktops, displays, workstations, printers and network equipment combine active consumption with many hours of idle operation. A computer that is busy for eight hours but awake for the remaining sixteen has a different profile from one that sleeps promptly. Multiple monitors and powerful workstations multiply the active load.

DOE Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) guidance specifically prioritizes computers and displays for low-standby procurement. Set operating-system sleep timers, turn displays off independently, and configure automatic shutdown outside working hours. For offices, document the schedule for shared workstations, conference-room displays and network closets; an always-on device in an unoccupied room is a controllable load. Networking hardware may need to stay on for security or remote access, so confirm operational requirements before using a timer.

4. Televisions and audio/video systems

Televisions consume energy while displaying content and can continue drawing standby power for remote-control reception, network connectivity or instant-on features. Set-top boxes, game consoles, speakers and receivers add separate standby loads, often remaining connected even when the screen is dark.

DOE FEMP’s December 2024 guidance models a 54.5-inch LED television at 133 kWh per year for a best-available case, 168 kWh per year for an ENERGY STAR model and 235 kWh per year for a less-efficient model. These are modeled values under the guidance’s stated assumptions, not a guarantee for every television or viewing schedule. Disable instant-on features when they are unnecessary, enable automatic power-down and place the television and its accessories on a switched or advanced power strip if cutting standby power will not interrupt required functions.

5. Printers, copiers and imaging equipment

Office printers and copiers can remain connected and ready for long periods even when they print only occasionally. Their energy profile includes warm-up, ready, sleep and off modes; a fleet of idle machines can therefore matter more than one heavily used device. Select deep-sleep settings, schedule shutdown for nights and weekends, and consolidate rarely used printers where workflow permits.

Context changes the ranking dramatically. In hospitals, DOE identifies imaging equipment such as MRI and CT scanners as typically among the largest single plug loads. That is a specialized commercial situation, not a household ranking. Medical and laboratory equipment must follow clinical, safety and uptime requirements, so controls should be approved by the responsible facilities team rather than applied like a home power strip.

6. Water coolers and water heaters

Any appliance that continually heats or cools a reservoir can create a persistent load. DOE office plug-load material lists water coolers and water heaters among measured equipment types. The energy cost depends on the set point, insulation, room temperature, usage pattern and how often the heater or compressor cycles.

In an office, schedule cooling or heating around occupancy when the equipment and hygiene requirements allow it. Improve insulation and eliminate unnecessary hot-water circulation or recirculation. Do not switch off a system if doing so creates a sanitation, freeze-protection or process risk; document the safe operating range first, then measure the result of a schedule change.

7. Space heaters and other high-wattage portable devices

Portable resistance heaters, hot plates, kettles and similar devices are often among the highest instantaneous plug loads. Their annual consumption is not determined by wattage alone: thermostat cycling, insulation, outdoor temperature and hours of use can turn a short-lived load into a major one.

Use a timer or thermostat so a heater operates only while the space is occupied, and address drafts or insulation problems that cause excessive runtime. Keep portable heaters on a suitable, directly connected circuit as required by the manufacturer’s instructions; do not overload a power strip. Measure a representative cold-weather period, because a summer reading will understate the seasonal total. For hot plates and kettles, avoid reheating unused water and heat only the amount required.

8. Always-on miscellaneous electronics and chargers

Routers, set-top boxes, game consoles, chargers, speakers, clocks and small power supplies may each draw modest power, but their combined standby hours create a large “phantom” load. DOE consumer education describes a typical American home as having about 40 products constantly drawing power, together amounting to almost 10% of residential electricity use. DOE defines phantom load, also called standby power, as power consumed by electronics and appliances while switched off, and notes that standby power can be a significant contributor to product energy use.

How to measure your home’s or office’s biggest loads

  1. List connected equipment. Walk room by room and record refrigerators, freezers, displays, computers, printers, entertainment systems, heaters, water equipment and chargers. Include devices that appear to be off.
  2. Measure uncertain devices. Use a plug-in electricity-usage monitor; DOE’s homeowner guidance illustrates a Kill-A-Watt meter for household feedback. Follow the meter and appliance safety instructions, especially for high-current heaters and kitchen equipment.
  3. Capture a representative period. Measure cycling appliances for several days, office equipment across working and non-working days, and seasonal heaters during representative weather. Record the meter’s kWh, not only instantaneous watts.
  4. Separate operating states. Note active, idle, sleep and off-but-connected readings. This shows whether a timer or sleep setting can save energy without replacing the equipment.
  5. Annualize carefully. Multiply a representative daily or weekly kWh by the corresponding number of days or weeks, and label the result as an estimate. Do not treat a short measurement as a full-year fact when usage is seasonal.
  6. Rank by annual kWh. Start with the largest measured totals, then check whether a low-cost control can reduce them. Re-measure after changing a setting or installing a power strip.

Controls that usually deliver the quickest savings

Control Best targets Important limitation
Sleep and low-power settings Computers, monitors, printers and displays Verify that updates, backups or remote access will not be interrupted
Automatic shutdown schedules Office workstations, copiers, televisions and media systems Exclude equipment required for security, medical or network availability
Switched power strips TV accessories, desk peripherals and chargers Do not place refrigerators, heaters or critical equipment on a strip that may be switched off accidentally
Advanced power strips, wireless meters and controls Grouped office and entertainment plug loads Configure sensing thresholds so necessary devices do not lose power
Efficient replacement Refrigerators, freezers, televisions, computers and imaging equipment at end of life Compare certified annual energy use and standby performance, not just peak watts

When buying or specifying equipment, use ENERGY STAR product lists and FEMP low-standby guidance. FEMP’s federal requirement is 1 watt or less when compliant products are available. That requirement applies to covered federal procurement; it is a useful benchmark, not a claim that every consumer product meets it.

Why building type and date matter

A home, office, retail site and hospital have different plug-load patterns. A household may be dominated by refrigeration and entertainment, while a hospital’s imaging equipment or an office’s computer fleet can dominate. Occupancy schedules, climate, appliance age and local electricity practices also change the order. DOE states that plug-load growth from increased use of information technology and personal devices is inevitable, which makes controls and procurement increasingly important.

DOE published historical phantom-load estimates of 43 billion kWh per year in the United States and about 450 kWh per average home in a 2001 fact sheet. Those figures are historical estimates, not a current national measurement; use the newer consumer description and your own meter readings for present decisions. The durable conclusion is methodological: treat the eight groups as candidates, measure representative kWh, and control the loads that are both large and safely controllable.
