Pine cones can become simple ornaments, garland, wreath accents, centerpiece fillers, or painted seasonal decorations. Gathered cones are a low-cost starting point: clean and dry them before bringing them indoors, then pair them with greenery, ribbon, twine, or optional craft supplies. Keep all pine-cone displays away from flames and heat sources.

Choose a pine-cone project

Pick a format that suits the space and the amount of crafting you want to do. The effort descriptions below are qualitative; the cited sources do not provide comparable time or cost estimates.

Project Assembly effort Look
Bow-tied ornament Low: tie a bow to one suitable cone and hang it on a branch. Natural and simple, with a small accent of color from the bow. (University of Illinois Extension, “Nature Ornaments for the Holidays”)
Twine garland Moderate: attach several cleaned cones along natural-fiber twine. Rustic, with the cones forming a repeating natural texture. (University of Vermont Extension, “Holiday Decorating, Naturally”)
Wreath or centerpiece Varies with the number of cones and greenery used. A fuller natural arrangement; change the greenery or companion colors to shift the display from fall toward winter. (University of Vermont Extension; University of Illinois Extension)
Basket arrangement Low to moderate: group cones with greenery, ribbon, and battery-operated fairy lights. Cozy and layered, suited to a winter display. (West Virginia University Extension, “Holiday Decorating on a Budget”)
Painted cone Low to moderate, depending on the finish and embellishments. Snow-tipped, metallic, or colorful; a large green cone can also be decorated as a miniature tree. (National Trust, “Make a pine cone Christmas decoration”)

Make simple displays with natural cones

Hang one as an ornament

Tie a bow around a cone and hang it from a tree branch or another suitable display point. Choose a cone with a shape and scale that hang well, and use ribbon or twine that can support it. Illinois Extension describes this straightforward ornament approach in its nature ornament ideas.

String a garland

Use natural-fiber twine to tie cleaned cones along a length of cord. Space them evenly for a regular pattern or vary the gaps for a looser, more natural look. Vermont Extension recommends pine-cone strings as one way to use collected cones.

Add cones to a wreath or centerpiece

Group cones with greenery and other natural finds in a wreath, holiday pot, or centerpiece. Keep the arrangement balanced: a few cones can punctuate greenery, while a larger cluster makes the cones the focal point. For a seasonal change, swap companion colors or greenery rather than making a new display; Vermont and Illinois Extension describe cones in wreaths, garlands, and holiday arrangements.

Build a basket display

Set cones among greenery in a basket and add ribbon and battery-operated fairy lights for a cozy winter arrangement, as suggested by West Virginia University Extension. Battery-operated lights avoid an open flame, but follow the product’s placement and use instructions and keep the whole display away from heat.

Paint cones for a different finish

Brush on snowy edges

Brush white paint onto the tips or edges of an open cone to suggest a dusting of snow. Glitter is an optional extra if you want more sparkle. The National Trust describes this effect as a pine-cone decoration.

Go metallic

Paint or dip a cone in gold or silver paint for a brighter finish; glitter can be added if desired. Illinois Extension also notes that spray and glitter paints work on pine cones. Use paint according to its label, including any ventilation and drying directions.

Make a miniature cone tree

Paint a large open cone green, then attach small pom-poms or beads to its scale tips as ornaments. This turns the cone’s natural shape into a small tree decoration. The National Trust outlines this project; Illinois Extension also features pine-cone trees in its seasonal programming.

Clean and dry foraged cones before indoor use

Vermont Extension recommends soaking gathered pine or conifer cones in two parts warm water to one part white vinegar for 30 minutes. Weigh them down if they float and stir the water every 10 minutes to loosen debris and bugs. Shake off excess water, then dry the cones completely on a towel or cooling rack before decorating or storing them.

ANDALUCA Pinecone Vase & Bowl Fillers | Scented Pine Cones Decor (Natural)
  • Decorative Real Pine Cones are perfect for the Holiday season
  • Large Natural Pine Cones are great for Seasonal & Holiday Decortouch
  • Give your home a holiday vibe with these beautiful pine cones
  • Real Pine Cones with pine needles for a natural touch

This is Vermont Extension’s preparation recommendation, which it says removes sap and disinfects cones; it should not be treated as a universal or laboratory-validated sterilization standard. The National Trust separately advises checking for small bugs before dipping a cone in paint or glue.

Keep pine-cone decorations clear of heat

Pine cones and other natural seasonal materials can burn. Oklahoma State University Extension advises keeping decorations away from open flames, fireplaces, vents, radiators, and other heat sources. Gina Peek of Oklahoma State University Extension puts the principle plainly: “While decorations such as dried flowers, cornstalks or crepe paper can easily catch fire, all decorations should be located away from open flames, fireplaces, vents, radiators and other heat sources to reduce the fire risk.”

  • Do not place pine-cone arrangements near candles, fireplaces, radiators, or heating vents.
  • Keep displays out of doorways and foot traffic, and watch for sharp scales or small parts around young children.
  • Consider flameless candles where a candle-like effect is wanted. Battery-operated fairy lights are another option, but use them according to their manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Painting, washing, or vinegar soaking does not make a cone fire-resistant.

UC San Diego’s holiday decorating page addresses workplace rules for decorative materials, exits, and listed lights; those requirements are workplace guidance, not household rules.

Gather a few optional supplies

For the simplest projects, foraged cones and a bow or twine may be enough. Depending on the design, optional materials include water-based craft paint, a paintbrush, craft glue, small pom-poms or beads, ribbon, and battery-operated fairy lights. A wreath base may help with a wreath project, but it is not necessary for every idea.

Forage only where collecting is allowed, and bring home cones that are intact and suited to the intended display. If you include holly or winterberries as greenery accents, Vermont Extension notes that those berries are toxic to pets and people; do not treat them as a safe edible decoration.
