Construction on Princeton’s Eric and Wendy Schmidt Hall is scheduled to move through selective demolition and abatement, spring and summer site work, and mass building demolition beginning in fall 2026. The project is not a wholesale teardown of Guyot Hall: Princeton plans to renovate the historic 1907 building and add a larger new wing.
What is being demolished at Schmidt Hall?
The work transforms former Guyot Hall into a unified home for Princeton’s Computer Science Department and related initiatives. Princeton Facilities describes a renovation of 98,000 square feet of the 1907 building alongside a 131,000-square-foot addition, for 229,000 gross square feet overall. Princeton Facilities’ project page characterizes the undertaking as renovation and new construction, not removal of the entire historic hall.

The publication described the interior work as a gut renovation, based on comments from University Architect Ron McCoy. What is the demolition schedule?

- March 2026 — selective demolition and abatement: Initial work is scheduled to remove selected materials and address hazardous materials.
- Spring and summer 2026 — early site work: Site demolition, earthwork and utility work are scheduled to continue through these seasons.
- Fall 2026 — mass building demolition: The notice schedules the start of larger-scale building demolition after abatement in additions is complete.
Because the notice uses planned dates and broad seasonal windows, it does not establish that a specific phase is complete. For current on-site status, consult the university’s latest project or construction notice rather than treating the schedule as a progress report.
What will the completed hall include?
Princeton describes the project as a shared home for Computer Science and related initiatives, including a hub for computational thinking. The university’s May 23, 2026, groundbreaking report quoted Provost Jennifer Rexford: “When Eric and Wendy Schmidt Hall is complete and the computer science department is unified under one roof, it will make a tremendous difference in our research, our teaching, our collaboration and our outreach.” Princeton’s groundbreaking announcement

Planned spaces listed by Facilities include classrooms, teaching laboratories, offices, meeting and collaboration rooms, a central Commons, an indoor bike room, a courtyard and a raised terrace. The project page also lists daylight harvesting, efficient HVAC and lighting, geo-exchange heating and cooling, a high-performance exterior envelope and mass timber among its sustainability features. Princeton says it is seeking LEED certification; that is a goal, not confirmation of certification.

Princeton’s sources give different estimates. The project-specific Facilities page lists estimated completion in Q2 2030, while the Princeton Engineering overview lists 2029. The more detailed project page’s Q2 2030 estimate is the clearest current project-specific date, but it is not a guaranteed opening date. Princeton has not reconciled the difference between that estimate and the Engineering overview’s 2029 listing.
