Drivers heading to Penguins home games should allow extra time near the Forbes and Fifth avenues approach: construction on Duquesne University’s new Health Sciences Facility has been linked to heavier-than-usual traffic in the area. The available information does not establish a specific lane closure, detour, or delay time, so check conditions before setting out.
Where the construction-related traffic concern is
The reported concern is near the Forbes and Fifth avenues approach to PPG Paints Arena, associated with Duquesne University’s Health Sciences Facility construction along Forbes Avenue. The project site is at Forbes Avenue and Magee Street in the Bluff neighborhood, according to the City of Pittsburgh’s planning review.
Duquesne describes the planned facility as approximately 82,000 square feet and five stories. It is intended to house the John G. Rangos, Sr. School of Health Sciences, with an opening planned for fall 2028. Those project details describe the building, not the traffic controls around it. No verified information establishes the exact lane, curb, sidewalk, parking, or detour restrictions at the site, or how many minutes a driver may lose.
Duquesne construction and PennDOT bridge work are separate projects
| Work area | What is established | Event-night information |
|---|---|---|
| Duquesne Health Sciences Facility, Forbes Avenue | University construction near the Forbes and Fifth avenues approach; the City planning page locates the site at Forbes Avenue and Magee Street. | No specific event-night lane closure or detour is established in the available project information. |
| Fort Duquesne Bridge, I-279 and Route 65 corridor | PennDOT preservation work on the bridge, nearby highway sections, and associated ramps. The project began in June 2026 and is expected to conclude in fall 2027. | PennDOT says overnight closures are not permitted on nights with events at PPG Paints Arena or the North Shore stadiums; single-lane restrictions may occur two hours after an event. |
PennDOT’s rule applies to its bridge-project corridor; it does not set rules for Duquesne’s construction site. Nor does the rule mean roads will be free of all work or traffic effects on an event night.

PennDOT’s Fort Duquesne Bridge preservation project is valued at $12.17 million. Planned work includes steel repairs, painting, expansion-joint and deck work, drainage improvements, and pavement markings. PennDOT has anticipated some overnight and weekend closures and detours, including a one-week closure and detour of the I-279 left-hand North Shore off-ramp (Exit 1B) and an approximately two-week closure and detour of westbound Reedsdale Street. These are anticipated project elements, not confirmation that either closure is active on a particular game date. PennDOT’s notice lists the project details and its event-night policy at its Fort Duquesne Bridge work notice.
Check the game date and live road conditions
The Penguins’ schedule and PPG Paints Arena’s October 2026 calendar list a home game against Dallas on October 10 at 7 p.m. Other Penguins games and non-hockey events can also affect local traffic. Check the Penguins’ 2026–27 schedule and the arena event calendar for the date you plan to travel; event listings may change.

- Flexible PVC: The road parking cones is made of sturdy PVC material, can withstand vehicle impacts, bend under pressure, and rebound to their original shape without cracking
- High Intensity Reflective Strips: Each large traffic cone has 1 4-inch and 1 6-inch reflective collar, ensuring 360° visibility day and night even in low-light or rainy conditions, enhancing the safety of drivers and workers
- Multiple Uses: Can be used for highway maintenance, road works and construction, marking road hazards, parking lots, or crowd control
- Easily Stored for Transport: The traffic cones are easy to stack together and take up very little space in your car or garage, making storage and transportation very easy
Before leaving, use PennDOT’s 511PA service for current traffic delays, speeds, weather, and camera views. PennDOT describes it as free and available 24 hours a day via the website, mobile apps, phone at 5-1-1, and regional social-media alerts; it provides access to more than 1,200 traffic cameras. A live check is more useful than treating a general project notice as a route guarantee, and it may not capture every venue-side restriction.
