TxDOT is rebuilding the I-10 and Loop 1604 junction in northwest Bexar County as part of a broader, 23-mile Loop 1604 North Expansion. Construction could affect travel, but the available information does not establish whether gridlock, a particular delay, or any specific closure is occurring today. Check TxDOT’s current project updates and DriveTexas before you leave, then follow posted signs.
What TxDOT is building at I-10 and Loop 1604
The interchange work is Segment 2 of TxDOT’s Loop 1604 North Expansion, a $1.4 billion program covering 23 miles of Loop 1604 from SH 16 (Bandera Road) to I-35 in North Bexar County. The project is divided into six construction segments. TxDOT’s project overview describes replacing the existing cloverleaf connectors at I-10 with a “fully directional, five-level interchange.”
The interchange is one part of a corridor-wide expansion. TxDOT’s plans include widening Loop 1604 from four lanes to ten, adding one high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction, reconfiguring ramps and auxiliary lanes, and providing pedestrian and bicycle accommodations. The planned changes do not indicate which lanes or ramps are open on a given day.
What the published schedule says—and when it was reported
TxDOT’s May 7, 2025 progress bulletin reported that Segment 2 was 62% complete and had an estimated completion year of 2027. Those figures describe the segment’s status and estimate at that time, not its verified status in October 2026. The project overview does not provide a refreshed interchange-specific completion percentage or live closure schedule.

The Texas Governor’s Office announced the Segment 2 groundbreaking on October 19, 2022. Its announcement said work had begun in late summer 2022 and listed 2027 as the expected completion year. That is the original public schedule, not confirmation that the target remains unchanged. The same announcement gave Segment 2’s cost as $418 million; that older segment-specific figure is distinct from TxDOT’s current stated $1.4 billion investment for the full corridor program.
TxDOT advertises a potential future travel-time reduction of “as much as 80 minutes” on its project overview. Separately, TxDOT San Antonio District Engineer Gina Gallegos said in the 2022 Governor’s Office announcement that drivers “could see future travel times reduced by as much as 76%.” These are prospective agency claims, not measured results or guaranteed savings for an individual trip. The Governor’s Office also cited a projection of 290,000 drivers per day on the corridor by 2045; it is a future projection, not a current traffic count.

How to check today’s closures and traffic
- Review TxDOT’s project information. Open the Loop 1604 North Expansion page and look for its traffic impacts and project updates. Use these for project-specific notices, but confirm timing before departure.
- Check live road conditions on DriveTexas. Visit DriveTexas close to your travel time and check the area around I-10 and Loop 1604, including the direction you plan to travel.
- Follow signs and instructions on the road. Work zones and traffic control can change. Posted signs and on-site directions take precedence over an older plan or notice.
The available published information does not identify active October 4, 2026 closures, quantify current delays, or establish that gridlock is happening. Without a current notice or live traffic information, it is not possible to name a closed ramp or recommend an official detour.

Construction involves more than replacing the interchange connectors: the corridor project also changes lane capacity, ramps, and auxiliary lanes. That scope makes changing traffic patterns a reasonable concern, but actual effects depend on the work underway and any current closures. A long-term project description cannot tell you how a specific trip will move today.
