Des Moines Public Schools has begun an $8.2 million expansion at Studebaker Elementary, 300 E. County Line Road in Des Moines, Iowa. The project adds six classrooms and makes several changes to the school’s outdoor and arrival areas. Completion is projected for the start of the 2027–28 school year, according to Business Record’s October 8, 2026 report.
What the Studebaker expansion includes
The reported project scope combines additional classroom space with updates to the school’s site and front office:

Business Record identifies Ames-based Story Construction as construction manager. The report credits renderings to Unison Design Group; that credit alone does not establish the firm’s full design or contracted role.

When construction is expected to finish
Business Record reports that completion is expected by the start of the 2027–28 school year. That is a projected window, not a guaranteed opening date. The report does not give intermediate construction milestones.

How much capacity the addition is expected to provide
Studebaker enrolled 534 kindergarten-through-fifth-grade students in the 2025–26 school year. A district spokesperson quoted by Business Record said the expansion is expected to allow enrollment of up to 640 students. The 534 figure is past-year enrollment; 640 is projected capacity, not a forecast of how many students will enroll.
How the project fits into Reimagining Education
The Studebaker work is described as the fifth Des Moines school to undergo updates under the district’s five-year Reimagining Education plan. Construction at Brody, McCombs, Goodrell and Weeks middle schools began during the summer, Business Record reports.

The wider plan includes signature or magnet schools in three district regions, expanded access to all-day preschool, Montessori expansion, and more than 120 new classrooms intended to support hands-on and project-based learning, critical thinking, and career and technical education. It also includes a new Moulton school at 1541 Eighth St.
Reported funding for Studebaker and the wider plan
Business Record reports that statewide Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) sales-tax revenue is paying for the Studebaker construction. Separately, the report says voters approved a $265 million district bond referendum the preceding November and that bond and sales-tax revenue support the broader Reimagining Education plan. These are distinct funding descriptions: the report does not attribute the Studebaker project’s cost to the bond.

In a prepared statement quoted by Business Record, Superintendent Matt Smith said, “When we invest in the places where students learn, we send a clear message that they matter and that their future matters.” He added that the addition “will give the Studebaker community more space to learn, collaborate and grow together.”
