The safest way to clean most modern flat-screen TVs is simple: turn the television off and unplug it, let the panel cool, remove dust with a clean dry microfiber cloth, and use only a barely damp cloth for persistent marks if the exact model’s instructions permit moisture. Never spray liquid directly onto the screen, press hard, or use household glass cleaner, alcohol, ammonia, abrasives, or paper products by default.
That guidance generally applies to LCD, LED-backlit LCD, QLED, Mini-LED, OLED, QD-OLED and, where still relevant, plasma displays. However, their surface coatings differ, so the manufacturer’s manual for your exact model overrides general advice.

The safest way to clean a flat-screen TV
- Check the exact model’s manual first. Search the manufacturer’s support site for the model number and read its screen-cleaning instructions. General advice is a fallback: manufacturers differ on whether water or a particular cleaning substance is permitted. Samsung, for example, says not to use water unless the product instructions allow it, while some Sony and LG instructions describe a lightly dampened cloth for particular models or situations. - Turn the TV off, unplug it and let it cool. Cleaning a cool, disconnected set makes smudges easier to see and reduces the risk of heat-related streaks or electrical problems if moisture reaches an opening. If the television is wall-mounted, do not lean heavily on the panel or mount while wiping.
- Remove loose dust first. Use a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. Wipe lightly and remove visible grit rather than dragging it across the surface. Starting with a wet cloth can turn dust into a gritty paste.
- Try the dry cloth on remaining smudges. Use broad, gentle passes with only enough pressure for the cloth to contact the panel. Do not scrub, push into the display, use a fingernail or repeatedly attack one small spot.
- Use minimal approved moisture only if necessary. If the manual permits water, lightly dampen the cloth—not the television—with water. Distilled water is a conservative choice where water is allowed because it contains fewer dissolved minerals than tap water, but it is not universally required. Wring the cloth until it is nearly dry.
- Wipe gently, then dry immediately. Use a second clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove moisture and streaks. Watch the lower edge of the panel, where liquid can collect. Keep the set unplugged until the screen and surrounding surfaces are fully dry.
- Reconnect and inspect. Once everything is dry, plug in the TV and check the result. If a cloudy patch, line, blotch, peeling area or discoloration remains, stop cleaning. More aggressive rubbing or stronger chemicals can make the damage permanent.
LG specifically warns that excessive force can cause scratches or discoloration and that water should not be allowed to run down the screen. Useful supplies
- Two clean, soft microfiber cloths
- Water or distilled water, only where the TV manual permits it
- A model-approved screen solution, if the manual specifically recommends one
- A separate soft cloth for the frame, stand and rear panel
Use a dedicated cloth that has not been used with kitchen grease, automotive products, solvents or other chemicals. Check for trapped grit, rough sewn edges and tags that could contact the panel. A microfiber cloth is not automatically harmless: contamination, a rough edge or excessive pressure can still damage a coated surface. Wash reusable cloths without fabric softener and replace them if they remain dirty or chemically contaminated.

Most routine cleaning does not require a special kit. LG says special products are unnecessary for periodic cleaning of its OLED, 4K and LED TVs. A screen-cleaning kit is only worth considering if its ingredients are disclosed, the exact TV manufacturer permits them, and the directions say to apply the liquid to the cloth rather than the display. “For electronics” is not a sufficient compatibility claim by itself.
What not to use on a flat-screen TV

| Direct spray of any liquid | Liquid can run into the lower edge, seams, speakers, ports, buttons or internal electronics. |

These are default prohibitions, not a substitute for the manual. A rare model-specific exception may exist. For example, Sony’s support information includes a BRAVIA 9 II instruction permitting a microfiber cloth moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol in defined circumstances. That exception must not be generalized to other Sony TVs, other brands or other models.
Removing fingerprints, grease and stubborn residue
Light fingerprints
Start with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Use gentle, broad passes and inspect the screen from different angles. If the mark remains and the manual allows moisture, use a nearly dry cloth lightly dampened with approved water, then dry with a second cloth.

Greasy or sticky marks
Food residue, sunscreen and oily fingerprints may not respond to dry wiping. First remove any loose grit. Then follow the exact model’s approved damp-cloth procedure. Repeat gently if needed rather than increasing pressure. Never scrape a dried spot with a fingernail, card or plastic edge.

Dried water spots
Where water is permitted, a barely damp cloth can loosen light mineral residue. Distilled water may reduce the chance of leaving additional mineral spots, but it cannot repair a damaged coating and does not make direct spraying safe.
OLED, QLED, LCD, LED and Mini-LED: does the screen type change the method?
The broad cleaning method is similar, but the marketing label alone does not determine the safe product. An LED TV is generally an LCD panel with LED backlighting; QLED and Mini-LED sets also use different panel and backlight arrangements; OLED and QD-OLED displays have their own surface constructions. Individual models may use anti-glare, anti-reflective, polarizing or other protective layers.
That is why “OLED needs alcohol” or “every LED TV can be wiped with water” is unreliable advice. Surface coating and manufacturer instructions matter more than the category name. Flat-screen computer monitors also require caution: their manufacturers may specify different products or procedures from television makers.
Manufacturer-specific differences
Samsung
Samsung’s general guidance is especially conservative: use a soft, clean, lint-free dry cloth; do not use cleaning fluids, wax or chemicals; and do not use water unless the TV’s own instructions authorize it. Check the exact model before using any liquid. Samsung also warns against ammonia, acetone, benzene, alcohol and abrasive materials. See Samsung’s screen-cleaning guidance.

LG
LG guidance generally calls for unplugging the TV, using a soft microfiber cloth and avoiding direct spray, alcohol, acetone, benzene, automotive or industrial polish, abrasives and wax. Some LG pages permit a slightly dampened or lukewarm-water cloth for stubborn stains, while other wording is more restrictive. If you cannot confirm the exact model’s instruction, start with a dry cloth and use no liquid. Relevant guidance includes LG’s cleaning advice and its OLED-specific guidance.
TCL
TCL recommends turning off and unplugging the television, starting with a dry microfiber cloth and avoiding alcohol, ammonia and window cleaners. Its guidance mentions light circular motions for stubborn smudges, but minimal pressure is the more important rule. TCL also recommends a dry cloth for the frame and rear panel and identifies compressed air as an optional way to address dust in vents. See TCL’s maintenance guidance.
Sony
Sony emphasizes that the screen has a special surface coating and recommends a microfiber cloth, no direct spraying and no alcohol wipes, ammonia, disinfectants, solvents, acidic or alkaline cleaners or abrasive pads in its general guidance. Its model-specific exception for certain BRAVIA 9 II instructions demonstrates why the exact manual must control.

Frame and stand
Clean these separately with a soft cloth. The frame may be plastic, painted metal or a coated finish, so do not assume that a substance safe for the frame is safe for the screen. If the manual allows moisture for the exterior, apply it to the cloth and keep it away from seams and controls.

Rear panel and ventilation openings
Unplug the TV before dusting the back. Use a dry cloth gently and do not push debris into vents, ports or speaker openings. If dust buildup is substantial, TCL suggests compressed air for vents. Treat that as an optional, model-and-can-instruction-dependent method: keep the can upright, use short bursts from a safe distance and avoid forcing dust or moisture toward openings.
Maintain the ventilation clearance specified in the installation manual. General clearance varies by model and installation; do not apply a universal measurement simply because another TV uses one.
Remote control
Remove the batteries before cleaning. Use a lightly dampened—not dripping—cloth on the exterior and keep liquid out of buttons, seams, microphone openings, charging ports and the battery compartment. Let the remote dry completely before reinstalling the batteries.

If the screen becomes streaky or cloudy
Streaks usually result from too much liquid, a dirty or detergent-coated cloth, cleaning-solution residue, repeated rubbing while the panel was warm or a cloth washed with fabric softener.

- Turn the TV off and unplug it.
- Let the panel cool.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth and wipe gently without adding cleaner.
- If the manual permits water, use a barely damp cloth and immediately follow with another clean, dry cloth.
- Stop if the haze, clouding or discoloration does not improve.
Do not add alcohol, ammonia, polish or a stronger chemical to “cut through” the streaks. If the screen looks cloudy after glass cleaner or alcohol, the coating may already be damaged. Photograph the condition and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider rather than trying chemical correction.
If water or cleaner gets inside the TV
This is an electrical-safety issue, not a stubborn-stain problem. If it is safe to do so, unplug the TV immediately. Do not turn it on to test it, use a hair dryer or apply an external heat source. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service. If you notice smoke, sparking, an unusual odor or dangerous heat, leave the area and follow appropriate electrical-safety procedures.

Stop cleaning when a mark remains after a gentle, model-approved procedure. It may be:

- Damaged or peeling anti-glare coating
- A pressure mark
- Permanent discoloration
- Image retention or burn-in
- Internal contamination
- A panel defect
- Residue from an earlier cleaner
Dirt normally changes or disappears with an appropriate light wipe. A fixed line, blotch, cloudy patch, peeling area or discoloration that remains on different pictures is more likely to be a panel or coating issue. More rubbing cannot repair it and may enlarge the damage. Contact the manufacturer or service provider.
How often should you clean a flat-screen TV?
Clean only when dust or marks are visible. Routine light dusting with a clean dry microfiber cloth is preferable to frequent wet cleaning. Keeping food, drinks, sprays and children’s hands away from the panel reduces the need for intervention. Cleaning may improve appearance and help prevent abrasion from accumulated grit, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed way to extend the TV’s service life.
