The most reliable way to connect a Samsung TV to Wi-Fi without its remote is to plug in a USB keyboard. You can use it to open network settings, choose your wireless network, and type the password. If you only need internet access, an Ethernet cable is faster and simpler. Samsung’s SmartThings app works as a remote only when the TV is already reachable on the same network as your phone.

Samsung menu names vary by model year and software version. Look for combinations of Settings, All Settings, Connection, General, and Network.

Option 1: Connect the TV with Ethernet
An Ethernet cable connects the TV to your network by cable; it does not configure the TV’s Wi-Fi. This is the best workaround if your goal is streaming, software updates, or getting the TV online immediately.

- Find the TV’s LAN or Ethernet port. On some Samsung models, it is on the separate One Connect Box.
- Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the TV or One Connect Box.
- Connect the other end to an available LAN port on your router.
- Turn on the TV using its physical power button.
- Wait for the TV to detect the wired connection. If it does not connect automatically, use a USB keyboard or another control method to open network settings.
- Test an app such as YouTube or Samsung TV Plus.
Samsung lists Ethernet as an alternative when wireless setup is unavailable. Samsung setup guidance and network instructions provide model-dependent details.

Option 2: Use a USB keyboard to configure Wi-Fi
A standard wired USB keyboard is usually the best choice when the TV must join a new wireless network. Samsung documents connected keyboards as an input method for supported Smart TVs, but compatibility and behavior can vary by model and software version.
What you need
- A basic wired USB keyboard.
- Optionally, a USB wireless keyboard with a receiver, if the TV recognizes the receiver.
- A USB extension cable if the port is difficult to reach.
Check both the television and any One Connect Box for USB ports. Samsung’s input-device guidance explains the supported interaction methods.
Steps
- Turn on the TV with its physical control button.
- Plug the keyboard into a USB port on the TV or One Connect Box.
- Wait several seconds for it to be recognized.
- Open Settings or All Settings.
- Open the network area. A typical path is Settings → All Settings → Connection → Network or Settings → General → Network.
- Choose Open Network Settings, or the equivalent setup command.
- Select Wireless.
- Choose your Wi-Fi network and type its password.
- Select Done, Connect, or OK.
- Wait for the connected confirmation, then test an internet app.
Use the screen’s highlighted selection as the authority. Arrow keys and Enter commonly move through menus; letter and number keys enter the password, and Backspace deletes characters. Escape or Tab may work for navigation on some models, but shortcuts are not universal.

- Try a basic wired keyboard instead of a Bluetooth model.
- Try every USB port on the TV and One Connect Box.
- Disconnect other USB devices.
- Unplug the TV for about two minutes, reconnect it, and try again. Samsung recommends a cold boot for certain input and on-screen keyboard problems; see its input troubleshooting guidance.
- Try another keyboard.
- If USB input still fails, use Ethernet or another remote.
Option 3: Try a USB mouse
A USB mouse may let you click through setup screens on some Samsung TVs, but it is not guaranteed. A mouse can be recognized for one function yet fail to control system menus. A keyboard is preferable because entering the Wi-Fi password is the hardest part.

- Connect a wired USB mouse.
- Move it to see whether a pointer appears.
- If it works, select Settings, Network, Wireless, your network, and the password field.
- Use the on-screen keyboard, or connect a USB keyboard as well.
- Select Connect or Done.
Mouse functionality can be limited by model or feature. Samsung’s documentation describes these device-dependent limitations in its input and Remote Access guidance.
Option 4: Use SmartThings as a remote
SmartThings is useful when the TV is already connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your phone. It is not normally a first-time Wi-Fi configurator: installing the app does not send a new wireless password to an offline TV.
Set up SmartThings when the TV is already online
- Install and open SmartThings on your phone.
- Sign in to a Samsung account.
- Tap Devices, then + or Add device.
- Choose Samsung → TV, then tap Start.
- Select the location and room.
- Choose the TV from the list.
- Approve the connection on the TV if prompted, or enter its PIN.
- Open the TV in SmartThings and use the on-screen remote.
Samsung says pairing details vary by model and may require on-screen approval or a PIN. See Samsung’s SmartThings setup instructions and its on-screen remote guidance.
If the TV was connected to a router or hotspot before, recreating that network with exactly the same name and password may allow it to reconnect automatically. This is conditional and depends on the TV retaining its previous credentials. If it reconnects, SmartThings may then discover it.

Option 5: Use the TV’s physical controls
Samsung TVs commonly have a control button or joystick beneath the logo, on the rear, or along the side. Its functions vary substantially. It can usually power the TV on and may offer basic controls such as volume or input selection, but it may not provide practical navigation or text entry for Wi-Fi setup.
Use the physical button to turn the TV on, then combine it with Ethernet, a USB keyboard, SmartThings, or another remote.
Option 6: Borrow or buy another remote
Before buying a new remote, try another Samsung infrared remote, a cable or satellite remote, or a universal remote you already own. Samsung says an older Samsung IR remote can perform basic functions on another Samsung TV, including access to settings, although Smart Remote features may not transfer.
Universal remotes may require a Samsung manufacturer code and may not support every function. Samsung’s remote compatibility guidance is the safest starting point.

Replacement choices
- Basic Samsung Universal IR Remote: suited to power, volume, input, and menu access. Availability can change; check the official product page.
- Samsung SolarCell Remote with USB-C: a Smart Remote-style option for compatible 2019–2025 TVs. Confirm compatibility by model number on the official product page.
- Exact model replacement: search by the TV’s model number through Samsung Parts.
- Third-party universal remote: choose one that explicitly lists Samsung TV compatibility, while expecting that voice control and Smart Hub-specific functions may be unavailable.
Troubleshooting
The TV does not show your Wi-Fi network
- Restart the router and TV.
- Move the TV or router closer temporarily.
- Try the router’s 2.4 GHz network if separate bands are available.
- Check whether another device can see the network.
- Try Ethernet.
- Reset the TV’s network settings if you can reach the menu.
Do not use one universal reset sequence: Samsung menus differ by model. Consult the Samsung Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
The TV rejects the Wi-Fi password
Check capitalization, spaces, and look-alike characters such as O and 0 or I, l, and 1. Confirm that the router password has not changed and try a non-isolated primary network instead of a guest network. Manual DNS, including Samsung’s example of 8.8.8.8, is a later troubleshooting step—not a fix for an incorrect password.
SmartThings cannot find the TV
Confirm that the phone and TV are on the same local network, the TV is powered on, local-device permissions are enabled, and the correct Samsung account is being used. Samsung lets you check supported models through Devices → Add (+) → Add device → Samsung → TV → View by model name; see its compatibility guidance.

The TV is stuck in first-time setup
Try a USB keyboard first, Ethernet second, and a universal or replacement remote third. A factory reset is not a substitute for a remote: it erases settings and may return the TV to another setup screen that still requires input.
The TV connects but apps do not work
Check the router’s internet connection, the TV’s date and time, DNS resolution, Samsung account requirements, software updates, and whether the app service is temporarily unavailable. Test more than one app before assuming the TV’s Wi-Fi hardware has failed.
When to contact Samsung
Find the exact model number on the TV label, original packaging, or available settings screen. Use it to locate the correct manual, supported input devices, compatible remote, firmware, and repair options. Samsung’s support and contact page provides model-based assistance.
