The Continental Divide Trail’s southernmost 1.1 miles (CDT miles 0–1.1) are closed temporarily inside the New Mexico National Defense Area while crews build a second U.S.–Mexico border barrier and widen nearby roads. The Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) issued the latest notice on October 26, 2026. Hikers and non-construction vehicles must stay out of the work zone and must not cross the existing barbed-wire fence. During the fall closure, CDTC’s shuttle pickup is at Cache Box 1, 13.9 miles from the southern terminus. Construction is expected to finish around mid-November 2026, but that is an estimate rather than a guaranteed reopening date.
Is the CDT southern terminus closed?
Yes. CDT miles 0 through 1.1, including the southern terminus area in the New Mexico National Defense Area (NDA), are closed while border-barrier and road construction continues. The closure covers the trail’s endpoint near the Crazy Cook monument area and remains in force until CDTC posts an official reopening update.

Road work has resumed around High Lonesome Well, and Commodore Road is being widened through the NDA toward the border. The southeast section near Mengus Tank is under construction and is not considered safe for travel.
Why is the closure happening now?
On October 26, CDTC reported meeting with Fort Huachuca officials, the Bureau of Land Management’s Las Cruces District Office and U.S. Customs and Border Protection about construction impacts at the CDT’s southern terminus. The project includes a second U.S.–Mexico border barrier and associated road work, creating an active construction zone at the trail’s endpoint.

The terminus has been inside the NDA since federal lands were transferred from the Department of the Interior to the Department of Defense in April 2025. That change means domestic and international visitors need an access permit to reach the monument area. The permit requirement does not authorize entry into a closed construction zone.
Can hikers still reach the Crazy Cook monument?
Not during the current closure. The final 1.1 trail miles through the NDA are off-limits, and visitors must not bypass the closure by crossing the existing barbed-wire fence or approaching barrier-installation work.

When the trail and NDA reopen, hikers will again need the clearance required by Fort Huachuca. Check the latest CDTC and Fort Huachuca instructions before arranging transportation, because access conditions can change independently of the construction schedule.
Where does the CDT shuttle pick up during construction?
CDTC’s fall shuttle pickup is at Cache Box 1, located 13.9 miles from the southern terminus. This temporary arrangement supersedes the earlier drop-off near Mengus Well for the affected construction period.

Is Commodore Road safe to drive right now?
The southeast portion of Commodore Road near Mengus Tank is under construction and should not be used as a route through the work area. The road runs approximately 26 miles from New Mexico Highway 81 to the monument area, but the distance does not mean the entire route is currently open or suitable for ordinary vehicles.

When will the southern terminus reopen?
CDTC says the restrictions are expected to remain until construction is finished, with completion anticipated in mid-November 2026. “Expected” is a planning window, not a fixed reopening date. Weather, contractor schedules, inspections and military access controls could change the timing.

Treat CDT miles 0–1.1 as closed until CDTC announces that the trail and NDA access have reopened. A construction-completion announcement alone may not mean that visitor clearance procedures are active.
What should a 2026 CDT starter do?
- Check the latest closure notice. Verify whether CDTC has lifted the mile 0–1.1 closure before booking transportation to southern New Mexico.
- Use the temporary access plan. While the fall arrangement remains active, plan around the Cache Box 1 pickup, 13.9 miles from the terminus.
- Stay outside the work zone. Do not cross the barbed-wire fence, enter construction roads or approach the second barrier installation.
- Confirm authorization. After reopening, complete the Fort Huachuca/NDA clearance process required for the monument area. International hikers should allow extra time to satisfy any identity or access requirements.
- Recheck road conditions. Ask for a current status of the Commodore Road section near Mengus Tank before using any private vehicle, even if the trail itself has reopened.
- Plan lodging early. CDTC has warned that contractor activity could reduce temporary lodging availability in Hidalgo County.
Should you start during the closure or wait?
| Choice | What it means | Main concern |
|---|---|---|
| Travel during the closure | Begin from the temporary shuttle access at Cache Box 1, 13.9 miles from the terminus, if CDTC’s current arrangement permits your itinerary. | You cannot legally or safely complete the closed 1.1-mile section or reach the monument through the construction zone. |
| Wait for reopening | Plan to begin at the southern terminus after CDTC and Fort Huachuca confirm that the trail and NDA are open. | The mid-November target may move, so transportation and lodging reservations need flexibility. |
| Self-drive Commodore Road | Use the approximately 26-mile dirt route only after officials declare the relevant sections open and safe. | Construction near Mengus Tank currently makes the southeast section unsafe for travel. |
How does this affect the full Continental Divide Trail?
The closure affects only the southernmost 1.1 miles, not the approximately 3,100-mile route from Mexico to Canada. It does, however, change how a south-to-north hike starts: a hiker may need to begin at Cache Box 1 temporarily or postpone the start until the terminus reopens and access clearance is secured.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Keep proof of the latest access instructions with your trip documents. Conditions at a military-managed border area can change quickly, and an outdated shuttle plan or permit assumption can leave hikers unable to reach the intended start point.

Do international hikers need different permission after reopening?
Everyone must follow the Fort Huachuca clearance and NDA access process. International travelers should verify identity and permit requirements in advance because the notices do not establish a separate universal procedure.
