A flat blade does not match the screw’s cross-shaped recess, so it may not catch securely. If it slips, stop rather than forcing it; continued turning can damage the screw head.
Why the right Phillips driver is the better choice
A Phillips driver is shaped to engage the cross-shaped recess. Choose one that fills the recess in both width and depth: a bit that is too small or too large may not seat properly and can slip or strip the head. iFixit’s guidance on choosing the right screwdriver bit and screwdriver best practices recommends a suitable driver rather than relying on a mismatched tool.

When a flathead might work
A flathead can sometimes turn a Phillips screw if its blade catches firmly across the recess. Fit depends on the screw and the blade, so there is no guarantee it will work. Treat it as a last resort for a careful attempt, not as a substitute for the right bit.
- Place the blade in the recess and check that it catches securely before turning.
- Apply light, controlled pressure as you turn.
- Stop immediately if the blade slips or will not engage; forcing it risks worsening damage to the screw head.
iFixit describes using the wrong driver as a risky workaround, not a reliable method. Its guidance does not establish a success rate or compare damage rates for flathead use on Phillips screws.

If the Phillips screw is already stripped
A damaged recess is a different problem from an intact screw. iFixit advises trying a flathead only if it catches on the damaged head; if it does not engage, stop. Another documented removal method is deliberately cutting a slot into the head and then using a flathead, but that is a separate repair technique requiring appropriate tools and precautions. Do not confuse special Phillips drives with ordinary screws
Some screw designs have features intended to reduce cam-out, but those claims apply to specific drives. Phillips Screw Company says its PHILLIPS II system has anti-cam-out features. Its ACR Ribbed Phillips page describes compatibility with common Phillips drivers and emergency installation or removal with common tools. Those product-specific statements do not establish that a flathead is suitable for ordinary Phillips screws.
