Skip synthetic spiderwebs outdoors: their fine fibers can trap birds and other wildlife. You can still make a spooky display with pumpkins, decorations inside the windows, and other items that do not dangle or entangle animals.
Why synthetic spiderwebs are a hazard
Fake webbing may look harmless, but its fibers can ensnare birds. Audubon describes wildlife rehabilitators treating birds caught in artificial webs, with injuries that can include restricted blood flow and amputated toes. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service also warns that artificial spiderwebs can endanger wildlife.

Fall is also a time when many birds are migrating. Audubon notes that unfamiliar surroundings can make birds more vulnerable to hazards around homes. Keep synthetic webbing off trees, shrubs, fences, porches, and other outdoor surfaces.

If you want a web-themed display, put it on the inside of a window rather than outside. Audubon cautions that even webbing placed flush against a wall can ensnare a bird, so the safest choice is to avoid outdoor fake webbing altogether.

Make windows easier for birds to see
Glass can be difficult for birds to recognize, especially when it reflects trees or sky. Audubon recommends using seasonal decals, silhouettes, or other markers on windows; they can contribute to a Halloween scene while making the glass more visible to birds. Audubon’s October 18, 2024 article cites an estimate of 988 million bird deaths each year from building-glass collisions in the United States. That is Audubon’s reported estimate.
For a Halloween look, use window markers as part of an indoor scene rather than hanging materials outside the glass. Audubon identifies decals and silhouettes as options, but does not establish that any particular product or placement is tested or guaranteed to prevent collisions.

Use pumpkins thoughtfully
Audubon says birds may eat pumpkin skin, flesh, and seeds. When choosing where to display a pumpkin, consider nearby traffic, windows, and pets, rather than placing it where wildlife may be drawn into a hazardous area.

That is local guidance, not a national rule, but it is a useful precaution for a home display.

Check the rest of the outdoor display
- Keep decorations clear of paths wildlife may use through the yard.
- Avoid lights and dangling materials that could catch an animal.
- Take decorations down rather than leaving them outdoors for an extended period.
These precautions reflect Portage municipal guidance. Check the display periodically while it is up, especially after wind or rain, for loose, hanging, or fallen pieces.

If you find wildlife entangled or injured, contact a wildlife rehabilitation center for guidance instead of casually trying to free or handle the animal. Portage advises calling a wildlife center when an animal is in trouble. A rehabilitator can advise you on the safest next step for the animal and for you.
