Can You Still Plant Daffodils in Spring—or Is It Too Late?

Daffodil bulbs planted outdoors in spring usually miss the rooting and winter chill needed for dependable flowers. Here are your options if you missed fall.

Yes, you can plant a viable daffodil bulb outdoors in spring, but it is unlikely to grow or flower well that same spring. Daffodils are normally planted in fall so they can establish roots before the ground freezes and receive the winter cold needed for spring flowering. If the ground is still workable, a late fall planting may succeed; the cutoff depends on local conditions. If spring has arrived, you can try planting outdoors for a later season or force bulbs indoors with the required cold treatment.

Why fall planting gives daffodils a better start

Daffodils need time to grow roots before cold weather, then a period of winter chilling before they flower. A bulb planted in spring has missed that normal sequence, so planting it is possible but does not reliably produce healthy growth or flowers that season. Iowa State University Extension describes October as the ideal planting time in Iowa, while Kansas State’s September 17, 2026 guidance says spring-flowering bulbs in Kansas can be planted through October to allow time for root establishment before winter chilling. These are regional recommendations, not universal dates.

Buying bulbs in spring can still make sense if you plan to store them appropriately and plant them outdoors in fall for dependable spring blooms. For bulbs already on hand, choose between trying an outdoor planting for a later season and indoor forcing; neither guarantees that every bulb will flower.

Is it too late to plant daffodils outdoors?

Use the condition of the soil and your local climate rather than a single calendar deadline. Planting can remain an option in late fall while the soil is unfrozen, but bulbs need time to root before the ground freezes.

These examples show why local advice matters: a late planting date that can work in one place may be too late elsewhere. Check your local university extension service for a recommendation suited to your area’s soil-freeze timing.

How to plant bulbs when the ground is still workable

Iowa State Extension recommends these measurements for Iowa gardens. Depth and spacing can vary by bulb size and cultivar, so use local guidance if you garden elsewhere.

Bulb type in Iowa guidance Planting depth Spacing
Most daffodils 6 to 8 inches 6 inches apart
Smaller cultivars, such as ‘Tête-à-Tête’ 4 to 6 inches 4 inches apart
  1. Choose a site where the soil is workable and prepare a hole to the recommended depth.
  2. Set each bulb with its pointed end facing up.
  3. Backfill the hole, then water to settle the soil and support root growth.

If spring has arrived: choose outdoor planting or indoor forcing

Plant outdoors for a possible later display

If you have sound bulbs and want them in the garden, planting them is reasonable, but do not count on flowers that spring. Spring planting does not recreate the fall rooting and winter chilling period. The cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed schedule for when spring-planted outdoor bulbs will flower.

Force bulbs indoors for planned indoor flowers

Indoor forcing is an alternative when bulbs missed the outdoor planting window, but it does not bypass the need for cold treatment. Iowa State Extension recommends chilling daffodils for 12 to 16 weeks at 40 to 45°F before forcing. Keep potted bulbs dark during cold storage and water regularly. After chilling, move them first to a cool, dimmer location, then to bright light. Iowa State says flowering averages three to four weeks after bulbs leave cold storage; timing can vary, so treat that as an average rather than a promise.

Oregon State Extension also describes container planting followed by a cold period. After flowering, let the foliage die back naturally; the bulbs can then be replanted in the garden in fall or left dormant in their container. A pot and potting mix make the process possible, but they do not replace chilling.

Iowa State’s instructions for forcing daffodils indoors cover the chilling and post-chilling stages.

After flowering, let the foliage die back

Whether daffodils flower outdoors or are forced in a container, leave the foliage in place until it dies naturally. The leaves replenish the bulb for future growth; cutting them back while they are still green interrupts that process. Iowa State Extension says foliage commonly remains for four to six weeks after flowering, but let its natural dieback—not a fixed calendar date—guide removal. Iowa State’s foliage guidance
