The breaker protects the circuit wiring and connected equipment; installing a higher-rated breaker without checking them can let wiring overheat before the breaker trips. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises using 20-ampere protection only when you are certain the branch circuit is wired for 20 amperes (CPSC Guide to Home Wiring Hazards).
Why a larger breaker can create a hazard
A breaker is an overcurrent protection device, not a power upgrade. Its rating must be coordinated with the branch-circuit conductors and the equipment served. If a circuit designed for 15 amps is protected by a 20-amp breaker, the breaker may allow more current to flow than the wiring can safely carry. That can cause overheating before the breaker opens.
Whether a circuit can use 20-amp protection cannot be determined from the existing breaker alone—or from a wire gauge guess. Conductor material, ampacity, terminal temperature ratings, installation conditions, connected equipment, and applicable local code all matter. Schneider Electric’s summary of NEC conductor and protection requirements explains why terminal ratings and installation details affect conductor sizing (Schneider Electric: How to size conductors).
What must be checked before any change
The complete branch circuit
A qualified electrician needs to assess the conductors throughout the circuit, their material and ampacity, how they are installed, the connected devices, and the circuit’s load. The breaker’s amp rating must be appropriate for that complete installation. A conductor’s nominal size by itself does not establish that a 20-amp breaker is permitted.

The breaker and panelboard match
The replacement breaker must be listed or classified for the exact panelboard. A breaker that appears to fit is not necessarily compatible. UL Solutions’ Panelboard Application Guide explains that breakers from different manufacturers or of different styles may not be interchangeable, while noting specific certified exceptions. Check the panel’s label and approved breaker information; do not rely on physical fit or brand alone.
Terminals and applicable rules
Breaker markings identify matters such as permitted conductor type and range, terminal torque, and temperature ratings. UL Solutions’ Molded Case Circuit Breaker Marking and Application Guide describes these markings, including how terminal temperature ratings inform conductor sizing for breakers rated 125 amps or less. Manufacturer-specific specifications are not universal: for example, Schneider Electric’s HOM breaker FAQ describes wire ranges for particular HOM breakers and advises checking local restrictions. Those product details should not be applied to another breaker or installation.

- GENUINE OEM BREAKER — This offer includes two (2) authentic HOM115 15-Amp single-pole circuit breakers from Square D's trusted Homeline series. The robust thermal-magnetic mechanism is engineered for reliable dual-action protection, responding to both sustained low-level overcurrents and instantaneous high-current short-circuit events. This component is a factory-new, unused Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) part, ensuring full compatibility and performance for general-purpose 120VAC branch circuits.
- HOMELINE PANEL COMPATIBILITY — Designed with a plug-on mounting system for exclusive use in Square D Homeline load centers, CSEDs (Combined Service Entrance Devices), and breaker boxes. This standard 1-inch format breaker makes a secure and reliable connection to the panel's aluminum bus bar. It is not compatible with the different bus bar design of Square D QO-series panels, which ensures you are sourcing the specific component required for any Homeline electrical system.
- GENERAL-PURPOSE APPLICATION — The 15-Amp capacity is ideal for standard 120V branch circuits that use 14-gauge copper wiring (NM-B). Common applications include powering lighting fixtures, standard 15A receptacle outlets in bedrooms, living rooms, and hallways, and other general-purpose electrical loads requiring 15A overcurrent protection. This breaker is a direct replacement for existing 15A Homeline breakers or for adding a new circuit during a renovation or new construction project.
- TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS — This circuit breaker is Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Listed and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Certified. It features a standard 10,000 Ampere Interrupting Capacity (10kAIC) for residential safety. The box lug terminal accepts a wire size range of #14 to #8 AWG for copper (Cu) conductors or #12 to #8 AWG for aluminum (Al) conductors and has a recommended tightening torque of 35 lb-in to ensure a secure connection.
- INSTALLATION KIT — This is a technical installation package from FalconSupply. The box contains two (2) genuine HOM115 breakers, one (1) packet of AGS dielectric grease for terminal lug and bus bar contact lubrication, and one (1) Pro-Finishing Hardware Pack containing two zinc-plated steel panel cover screws and one green grounding screw.
Why the breaker may be tripping
A trip can result from an overloaded circuit or a fault; raising the breaker rating does not diagnose or repair either problem. If the circuit is overloaded, a larger breaker could mask the warning while increasing the risk to the wiring. The CPSC recommends checking which appliances are on the affected branch and, where possible, moving a load to a less-loaded branch. If the overload cannot be corrected, it advises getting help from a qualified electrician (CPSC Guide to Home Wiring Hazards).
Repeated tripping, unusual heat, a burning smell, or visible damage calls for professional attention rather than repeated resets or a higher-rated breaker. Do not open the panel or attempt a breaker swap unless you are qualified and the work is permitted under local rules.

How load rules affect breaker sizing
Some loads operate continuously, so code sizing may account for them differently from noncontinuous loads. Schneider Electric’s summary of NEC 210.20(A) describes a general approach of sizing branch-circuit overcurrent protection for the noncontinuous load plus 125 percent of the continuous load, with an exception for equipment listed for 100-percent operation (Schneider Electric: How to size conductors). This is a general U.S. code summary, not a calculation for an unknown circuit. The applicable NEC edition, local adoption, equipment listing, and actual load must be considered. A blanket “80 percent rule” is not a substitute for that assessment.
What to do instead
- If a breaker trips, identify what is on that circuit. Reduce or redistribute a confirmed overload when it is safe and practical; the CPSC recommends moving an appliance to a less-loaded branch when possible.
- Arrange qualified diagnosis if trips continue or the cause is unclear. A qualified electrician can distinguish an overload from a fault and inspect the wiring and connected equipment.
- Change the breaker rating only after the circuit and panel are verified. Any change must meet local code and use a breaker approved for that panelboard. A qualified electrician should make or supervise the change where required.
Answers to common questions
Can I replace a 15-amp breaker with a 20-amp breaker?
Only if a qualified assessment confirms that the complete circuit and panelboard are suitable for 20-amp protection. The breaker rating alone cannot establish that.

What wire size is needed for a 20-amp breaker?
There is no safe answer based only on a nominal gauge. Conductor ampacity, material, terminal ratings, installation conditions, equipment, and local code govern the actual circuit.
Will a 20-amp breaker stop the tripping?
Not necessarily. If the cause is an overload or fault, increasing the rating may hide the symptom without fixing the cause and can create a wiring hazard.
Can I use any brand of 20-amp breaker?
No. Use only a breaker listed or classified for the specific panelboard, as indicated by its label and approved breaker information.
