Its common terminal and traveler terminals are not interchangeable, and wire color alone does not identify which conductor is which.
How a 3-way switch differs from a regular switch
A standard single-pole switch has two switching terminals and controls a light from one location. A conventional 3-way switch has a common terminal, two traveler terminals, and a grounding terminal. Used as a pair, two 3-way switches control the same light from two locations. The common terminal switches its connection between the two travelers as the switch position changes; that is how the paired switches work together. Leviton explains the two-location arrangement, while Legrand describes the role of the third terminal.
| Feature | Single-pole switch | Conventional 3-way switch |
|---|---|---|
| Switching terminals | Two | One common and two travelers |
| Typical control arrangement | One location | Two switches controlling one light from two locations |
Can you use a 3-way switch for one-location control?
Often, yes. In a single-location application, the circuit’s common conductor and one traveler terminal can provide the switching path. Which terminals and conductors to use—and how to handle the unused traveler terminal and conductor—depends on the specific switch and the wiring already in the box. Follow the manufacturer’s diagram; do not treat the terminal layout as a universal wiring recipe.
The switch’s common terminal is usually darker or marked, but terminal placement varies by device. Identify conductors from the installation and device instructions, not by color alone. If the box wiring does not match the diagram, stop and have a qualified electrician assess it.
#1 Best Overall
- Faster installation with combination of side wiring and Quickwire push-in wiring
- Terminal screws accept up to No. 12 AWG copper or copper-clad wire
- Quickwire push-in terminals accept No. 14 AWG solid copper wire only
- Large triple combination screws Robertson/Phillips/Slotted for fast wiring
- Impact-resistant, durable thermoplastic toggle and frame
What changes when you use it as a regular switch?
With one switch operating the light as a single-location control, you do not get the usual two-location operation of a 3-way pair. To control a light from two locations in a conventional setup, use two 3-way switches wired for that application. A 3-way switch’s name describes its role in that arrangement; it does not mean that every connection can be made like a single-pole switch.
Safety checks before wiring
- Turn off the circuit breaker before working on the switch.
- Verify that power is off with a voltage tester before touching conductors. Manufacturer guidance from Legrand, Leviton, and Intermatic emphasizes de-energizing and checking before wiring; the Intermatic article applies to its named timer models.
- Use the installation instructions for the exact switch model. Do not assume that a diagram for another switch type or device applies.
- If you cannot confidently identify the conductors, or the wiring differs from the diagram, leave it disconnected and contact a qualified electrician.
These are general principles for conventional switches, not a diagnosis of any particular home’s wiring. Product instructions and applicable electrical requirements can vary by model and location.
