Yes—if “manage your house” means controlling lights, thermostats, fans, scenes, media players, timers, and sensors. Home Assistant Assist can run with wake-word detection, speech recognition, command processing, and spoken responses on hardware you control, without sending voice data to a third-party cloud.
It is not yet a complete Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri replacement. General web questions, effortless music discovery, broad household administration, flawless whole-home recognition, and consumer-level convenience may still require cloud services or additional hardware.

What “local” and “no-cloud” actually mean
A genuinely local voice system keeps the critical processing inside your home:

Home Assistant documents these as separate stages in its voice pipeline architecture. That distinction matters. Local wake-word detection combined with cloud speech recognition is not fully local. Nor is local speech processing combined with a cloud LLM.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
A local Home Assistant server can still use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and local devices can communicate through Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, or ESPHome. Home Assistant says these local protocols can continue operating without internet access. However, a cloud-dependent light, camera, thermostat, or appliance may still stop working during an outage.
“No-cloud” also does not mean “works during every failure.” Power, the local network, the Home Assistant host, the voice satellite, device batteries, and local software must all remain functional.
What can you control?
Assist is strongest at structured home-control commands. With correctly integrated and exposed devices, realistic examples include:
- “Turn on the kitchen lights.”
- “Turn off everything downstairs.”
- “Set the bedroom thermostat to 68 degrees.”
- “Turn on the fan in the office.”
- “What’s the temperature in the nursery?”
- “Is the garage door closed?”
- “Start the evening scene.”
- “Turn off the TV.”
- “Set a timer for five minutes.”
- “Add milk to my shopping list.”
The final example may not work with the narrow Speech-to-Phrase model, and support varies by language and configuration.
Every device must be:
- Integrated with Home Assistant
- Assigned a sensible name and area
- Exposed to Assist
- Represented by an entity type that Assist understands
A device that works from the Home Assistant dashboard can still be invisible to voice control if it has not been exposed or named clearly. Good names such as “kitchen ceiling light” and useful aliases generally produce better results than manufacturer-generated names.
Three ways to process speech
| Mode | Privacy | Hardware demand | Speed | Flexibility | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speech-to-Phrase | Fully local | Low | Very high | Narrow | Basic home control |
| Whisper | Fully local | Medium to high | Variable | Broader | More natural commands |
| Cloud speech | Not fully local | Low locally | Usually strong | Broad and language-dependent | Convenience and accuracy |
| Local or cloud LLM | Depends on the model | High or external | Variable | Highest | Experimental conversational control |
Speech-to-Phrase: the practical choice for basic control
Home Assistant describes Speech-to-Phrase as a focused, closed-ended model. It is designed for common home commands and can run in under a second on hardware such as Home Assistant Green or a Raspberry Pi 4, according to the current documentation.
Its limitation is deliberate: it understands a defined set of phrases rather than arbitrary conversation. Shopping-list entries, named timers, broadcasts, and other less predictable requests may not work out of the box.

For lights, switches, fans, scenes, thermostats, and simple status checks, this is often the best starting point. A narrow vocabulary can be more dependable than a system that understands everything imperfectly.
Whisper: more flexible, more demanding
Whisper attempts to transcribe open-ended speech and is better suited to broader commands or LLM integrations. It needs considerably more processing power for responsive results.
Home Assistant’s current local-assistant guide cites approximately eight seconds for incoming commands on a Raspberry Pi 4 and under one second on an Intel NUC for the described workload. These are guide-specific figures, not universal benchmarks; model, language, hardware, and configuration all affect performance. The Voice Preview Edition FAQ recommends at least an Intel N100 or equivalent for local Whisper Base processing, while noting that some languages may require larger models and more powerful hardware.
Local LLMs: capable but experimental
A local LLM can make commands more conversational, but it changes the reliability calculation. Home Assistant supports local and cloud LLM conversation agents or fallback agents, while describing AI-based smart-home control as experimental.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Native Assist intents are easier to audit and generally better for important controls. LLMs can interpret phrases such as “make the hallway feel cozy,” but they can also add latency, misunderstand ambiguous requests, or perform an unintended action.
For locks, garage doors, alarms, ovens, heaters, and other consequential devices, prefer explicit commands, confirmations, tightly restricted exposed entities, and constrained scripts. Do not assume that more natural language means more reliable control.
Hardware you need
A complete local setup requires:
- A Home Assistant OS host
- A microphone and speaker, either in a phone or dedicated satellite
- A local speech-to-text engine
- A local text-to-speech engine
- Home Assistant-compatible devices
Home Assistant’s local-assistant guide documents this configuration.

The official page lists a recommended U.S. MSRP of $69 before tax and €59 for Europe, though regional retailer prices may differ. It is a voice satellite, not a complete standalone smart-home controller: you still need Home Assistant running elsewhere.
Home Assistant labels the product a preview and acknowledges that language coverage and overall readiness are still developing. Treat it as a purpose-built Home Assistant accessory rather than a guaranteed universal smart-speaker replacement.
A phone
The Home Assistant Android and iOS apps can provide a low-cost way to test Assist. Android can support hands-free wake words such as “Hey Jarvis” or “Hey Nabu” when configured.
A phone is useful for trying the command model before buying hardware, but it is not automatically a good room satellite. It may be charging in another room, background restrictions can interfere, microphone pickup varies, and other household members may not have access to it.

Home Assistant documents inexpensive ESPHome-based voice satellites. Its linked tutorial describes approximately $13 in components, but that is not a guaranteed installed cost. Microphone, speaker, amplifier, enclosure, power supply, cables, shipping, and assembly time can raise the total.
DIY satellites suit technically comfortable users who value customization and repairability. They are less suitable for households that expect polished far-field audio without troubleshooting.

Linux satellite or stronger server
An experimental Linux Voice Assistant can run on x64 or ARM64 hardware with sufficient audio-processing capability. A stronger x86 mini-PC or existing desktop can also make local Whisper more responsive. Hardware that works for focused Speech-to-Phrase processing may be inadequate for full local speech recognition or an LLM.
Verified local setup path
The following follows Home Assistant’s current documented path, whose guide is labeled version 2026.7.3. Menu names may change in later releases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1. Install local voice components
- Install Speech-to-Phrase or Whisper.
- Install Piper for local text-to-speech.
- Start the applications.
- Open Settings → Devices & services.
- Add the services discovered through the Wyoming integration.
2. Create an assistant
- Open Settings → Voice assistants.
- Select Add assistant.
- Name the assistant.
- Select the language.
- Choose Home Assistant as the conversation agent.
- Choose Speech-to-Phrase or Whisper for speech-to-text and select its language.
- Choose Piper for text-to-speech and select its language.
- Expose the desired entities to Assist.
If Voice assistants is missing in a non-default configuration, Home Assistant’s guide says you may need this entry in configuration.yaml:
assist_pipeline:
Back up your configuration, check YAML syntax, and verify the configuration before restarting Home Assistant.
3. Test progressively
- “Turn on the test light.”
- “Turn off the test light.”
- “What is the temperature?”
- “Turn on the light in the kitchen.”
- “Activate the evening scene.”
- Repeat from another room.
- Repeat with another household member.
- Test with television or music playing.
- If safe, disable internet access and test a local device.
Will it work without internet?
Yes, a fully local voice pipeline can continue working without internet access when Home Assistant, the local speech and text-to-speech services, the LAN, power, the satellite, and the relevant device integrations remain available.
That creates several different outage scenarios:
- Internet failure: local voice and local-protocol devices may continue working.
- Vendor-cloud failure: a cloud-dependent device may fail even though Assist remains local.
- Local-network failure: networked satellites and devices may become unreachable.
- Home Assistant host failure: the conversation agent and automations may stop.
- Power failure: nothing dependent on powered equipment will respond.
Testing only an internet outage does not prove the system is resilient to every failure.
Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Wake word never triggers | Muted satellite, poor placement, unsupported wake word, or background noise | Check the mute switch, reposition the device, try push-to-talk, and choose an uncommon wake word |
| Wake word works but command fails | Speech-recognition error or unsupported language | Use shorter phrasing or switch from Speech-to-Phrase to Whisper if hardware permits |
| Transcription is correct but nothing happens | Entity is not exposed, area is wrong, or intent is unsupported | Check exposure, aliases, area assignment, and entity type |
| Responses are slow | Large Whisper model, weak host, or overloaded server | Use Speech-to-Phrase, a smaller model, or stronger hardware |
| Only some family members succeed | Accent, distance, acoustics, or language-model coverage | Improve placement, add aliases, test another model, and evaluate each user |
| Device fails only during an outage | The device integration depends on the manufacturer’s cloud | Use a local protocol or retain a manual control path |
Wake words can activate accidentally during conversation, television, podcasts, or music. Home Assistant recommends choosing a wake word that is uncommon in ordinary speech; this reduces but does not eliminate false activations. See its wake-word guidance.

Where it does not replace a mainstream assistant
Home Assistant’s built-in conversation agent primarily maps recognized text to home-control intents. It is not inherently a general-purpose source of web knowledge.
“Turn on the hall light” is a structured command. “What happened in the news today?” needs an external information source or AI service. “What should I cook with these ingredients?” is outside ordinary home-control handling.
Music also requires careful qualification. The Voice Preview Edition can provide voice feedback and output audio through its 3.5-mm connection, but its built-in speaker is intended for responses rather than premium music listening. Home Assistant recommends Music Assistant for controlling playback. Voice control of existing media players is different from searching streaming catalogs, synchronized whole-home playback, or replacing a standalone smart speaker.

Similarly, local Assist does not independently manage bills, shopping, appointments, maintenance, security decisions, or broad household administration.
Language and household considerations
Language support has at least three parts:
- A reliable local speech-to-text model
- Home Assistant sentence and intent support
- A local text-to-speech voice
A language may perform poorly if any one of these is weak. Do not treat a language list as a guarantee of equal recognition quality.
Whole-house usability also requires more than one successful demonstration. Consider whether:
- People can be heard from normal seating positions
- Commands work over television and music
- Multiple accents are recognized
- Children can use simple phrases
- Room and device names are intuitive
- Each frequently used room has a satellite
Which approach should you choose?
- Choose focused local processing for lights, switches, fans, scenes, thermostats, and status checks on modest hardware.
- Choose Whisper for broader local transcription when some latency and stronger hardware requirements are acceptable.
- Choose a phone to test Assist before purchasing dedicated hardware.
- Choose Voice Preview Edition for the simplest dedicated satellite, provided you already have a Home Assistant host.
- Choose an ESPHome satellite if low component cost and customization matter more than convenience.
- Choose cloud processing if maximum language coverage, accuracy, or easy setup matters more than strict no-cloud operation.
- Add an LLM cautiously only after the native pipeline works and sensitive devices are restricted.
Home Assistant Cloud is optional and can simplify setup or improve language support, but using cloud speech or a cloud LLM means the system is no longer fully no-cloud. Home Assistant states that optional services are enabled for functions the user chooses; those privacy statements should be understood as the provider’s claims, not as an independent audit.

Bottom line
A local, no-cloud Home Assistant voice assistant is now a credible way to manage the routine physical controls of a house. It can be private, fast, and resilient to an internet outage when the entire pipeline and the devices are local.
It is best understood as a focused home-control system—not a finished universal replacement for Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri. Start with Speech-to-Phrase, a few well-named local devices, and progressive testing. Move to Whisper or a local LLM only when you have a specific need and hardware capable of handling the additional complexity.
