The machine combines water from a used electric pressure washer with air from the builder’s existing shop compressor. It is an intriguing reuse project, not a tested, fully specified construction plan: the report gives no complete parts list, safe operating pressures, compressor requirement, output rate, or measured performance.
What the reported DIY snowmaker uses
Hackaday’s December 28, 2024, account describes a setup that brings water and compressed air together at a nozzle assembly. The builder reportedly used a secondhand electric pressure washer as the water source and an air compressor already on hand. The air line was garden hose rather than narrow-bore air hose, and a check valve was included to keep water from flowing backward toward the compressor.
- Two 40-degree pressure-washer nozzles for water
- One 65-degree nozzle for the air-and-water mix
- A used electric pressure washer and an existing compressor
- Garden hose, a check valve, and an improvised ladder frame, with the gun secured by zip ties
These are the components and arrangement described in the report, not a complete assembly specification. It does not identify nozzle models, fitting or thread sizes, pressure ratings, or provide a detailed diagram. A nozzle’s stated spray angle alone is not enough to establish that it fits or can safely handle a particular pressure washer. Hackaday’s project account
What “under $100” does—and doesn’t—mean
The headline describes the reported project, but the account does not provide an itemized bill of materials or a reproducible total. In particular, it relies on a used pressure washer and a compressor the builder already owned. The figure therefore should not be read as the cost for a new builder to buy every component, nor as a current price estimate.

It’s ideal for creating a festive atmosphere at parties, concerts, weddings, DJ sets, home gatherings, and karaoke events.
The source also does not establish the air compressor’s required capacity, safe pressures for the assembled system, water flow, snow production per hour, or performance under specific weather conditions. Without those details, the report is not enough to turn the concept into a verified build plan or to compare its total cost and output fairly with a purpose-built residential snowmaker.
Why humidity matters as much as air temperature
Snowmaking depends on whether atomized water droplets can cool and freeze before landing. Dry-bulb temperature—the ordinary air-temperature reading—does not tell the whole story. Humidity affects evaporative cooling, so sufficiently dry air can allow snowmaking when the air temperature is above 0°C; humid air can make snowmaking harder at the same temperature. The University of Wisconsin explains that wet-bulb temperature, which accounts for humidity, is a more useful guide. University of Wisconsin: Making Snow

In a 2010 study of commercial snowmaking in the Austrian Alps, Olefs and coauthors used a rounded wet-bulb threshold of −2°C. The study based that assumption on manufacturer specifications indicating a threshold near −1.5°C for the commercial gun types considered. Those figures describe the study’s commercial-equipment assumptions; they are not an operating guarantee for this improvised device. Olefs et al., 2010, Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology
Water use: keep large-scale figures in perspective
The University of Wisconsin’s educational page gives large-scale examples, not measurements of this backyard machine. It cites about 2 billion gallons of water used per year for snowmaking in Vermont—about one-seventh of the state’s public water supply—and estimates about 2,500 cubic meters (658,000 gallons) for a 500-by-60-meter area covered with 20 centimeters (8 inches) of artificial snow. The page does not state a publication year for these figures. They illustrate why water availability and local rules matter; they cannot be used to estimate this DIY machine’s consumption. What to check before attempting a build
The project report is an account of one builder’s setup, not a safety-tested set of instructions. Before adapting the idea, a reader would need equipment-specific information that the report does not supply.
- Compatibility: Confirm nozzle and fitting threads, hose suitability, pressure ratings, and compatibility with both the pressure washer and compressor. The reported spray angles do not establish these details.
- Backflow protection: The report includes a check valve to prevent water backing up toward the compressor, but gives no valve type or rating. Verify an appropriate component for the actual pressures and connections rather than assuming any check valve will do.
- Operating requirements: Determine the compressor’s required pressure and airflow and the pressure washer’s flow and pressure from verified specifications for the equipment being used. No requirements for this particular arrangement are established by the report.
- Site conditions: Check wet-bulb conditions, water supply, drainage, and local water-use restrictions before operating.
- Support and risk: An improvised ladder-and-zip-tie mount is what the story describes, not an engineered support recommendation. A purpose-built residential system may offer clearer specifications and support, but the available sources do not establish a like-for-like model comparison.
DIY build or purpose-built residential system?
The reported DIY approach may interest someone who already has compatible equipment and wants to investigate a project. A purpose-built residential system is a different option, but a fair comparison requires information on total installed cost, compressor and water requirements, weather conditions, output and snow quality, setup, backflow protection, water rules, and warranty or support. The sources here do not provide comparable specifications for the Hackaday build and a specific residential model, so they do not support declaring one the better choice. SnowStorm Snowmaking publishes requirements for its own systems; those requirements apply to its equipment, not to this DIY design. SnowStorm Snowmaking
