Can Amazon Echo Read Temperature and Humidity?

Some Echo models can sense temperature, but built-in Echo sensing does not measure humidity. Alexa humidity readings require a sensor and integration that explicitly share humidity.

Alexa can read temperature from certain Echo models, but an Echo’s built-in sensor measures temperature—not humidity. To get humidity readings, you need a separate sensor whose exact model and Alexa integration expose humidity. A sensor’s name alone is not proof that Alexa can report both.

Can an Echo measure temperature and humidity?

Amazon identifies Echo (4th Generation), Echo Dot (5th Generation), Echo Dot with Clock (5th Generation), and Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor as temperature-sensing devices for use with its Smart Thermostat. That supported-device list applies to the thermostat’s temperature-sensing workflow; it does not mean every Echo has a sensor or that these devices measure humidity. See Amazon’s Smart Thermostat temperature-sensing guidance.

Humidity is available to Alexa through compatible devices and integrations. Amazon’s developer documentation defines the Alexa.HumiditySensor interface, with relative humidity as its primary reported property, and its Matter documentation maps humidity measurement to that capability. But the sensor, connection method, and Alexa integration must all support it.

How do I ask Alexa for the room temperature?

For an Echo’s built-in temperature sensor, an Amazon Staff forum reply recommends adding that sensor to a Smart Home Device Group, then asking, “What’s the temperature of [group name]?” This is forum guidance for Echo temperature sensing, not a universal command guaranteed for every model or external sensor.

  1. In the Alexa app, open Devices.
  2. Select an existing Smart Home Device Group and choose the option to edit it.
  3. Add the Echo’s temperature sensor to the group, then save.
  4. Ask, “What’s the temperature of [group name]?”

The Amazon Staff reply says calibration can take up to 60 minutes. For a representative reading, Amazon advises keeping a temperature-sensing device uncovered and away from direct sunlight, vents, and places with poor airflow. See Amazon’s placement guidance for Smart Thermostat temperature sensors and the Amazon Staff forum response about the Echo temperature sensor.

Can Alexa tell me the humidity?

It can when a compatible humidity sensor reports its reading to Alexa. Amazon’s developer reference says, “The Alexa.HumiditySensor interface doesn’t have any user utterances.” That means the interface specification itself does not define a spoken command; it does not rule out a voice response provided through another Alexa feature or a manufacturer integration. Confirm the spoken-reading method in the documentation for the exact device before relying on a particular phrase.

Do not assume a device exposes humidity just because its name says “temperature and humidity.” For example, the Third Reality Temperature and Humidity Sensor Lite manual says humidity is not exposed to Alexa. The sensor may still show a humidity reading in its own app, but that does not establish Alexa access.

How to add and check an external humidity sensor

  1. Check the sensor’s exact model number and its manual or Alexa integration notes. Look for explicit Alexa humidity or relative-humidity reporting, or confirmation that it exposes the Alexa.HumiditySensor capability.
  2. Confirm how it connects: directly to an Echo hub, through a Matter controller, through a manufacturer hub, or through a manufacturer skill. Compatibility and available readings can vary by connection method.
  3. In the Alexa app, open Devices, tap the plus icon, choose Add Device, then select the device type and brand and follow the setup prompts. The precise path depends on the sensor and its integration. See Amazon’s guidance for adding smart-home devices.
  4. After pairing, check whether the Alexa app displays a humidity value. A device appearing in Alexa—or showing temperature—does not by itself confirm that humidity is available.
  5. If you plan to use humidity in a voice response or routine, verify that the specific product’s documentation supports that action. Support for a humidity reading does not establish universal routine triggers or a universal spoken command.

What to check if Alexa shows temperature but not humidity

  • Model-specific support: Check the sensor’s manual and Alexa integration notes. The Third Reality example shows that a combined sensor may not expose humidity to Alexa.
  • Capability and connection: Confirm that humidity reporting is supported for the exact model and for the way it is connected—directly, through Matter, or through a separate hub or skill.
  • Where the reading appears: Check both the Alexa app and the manufacturer’s app. A value available in the manufacturer’s app may not be shared with Alexa.
  • Echo sensor placement: If the reading is from a supported Echo temperature sensor, keep it uncovered and away from sunlight, vents, and poor airflow. The Amazon Staff forum guidance says calibration can take up to 60 minutes.

For an Echo temperature sensor that is not working with Amazon Smart Thermostat, Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the sensor and checking placement, account, activity, thermostat state, and software: Troubleshoot temperature sensing with Amazon Smart Thermostat.

Choosing a sensor Alexa can use for humidity

When comparing sensors, check the complete chain rather than relying on a broad “Alexa-compatible” label:

  • Measurement: Does Alexa receive temperature, humidity, or both?
  • Exact compatibility: Does the specific sensor work with your Echo or Alexa hub, and does it require a Matter controller or manufacturer hub?
  • Access: Can you see the reading in the Alexa app, request it by voice, or only view it in the manufacturer’s app? Verify each separately.
  • Automation: Does the product documentation confirm the particular humidity-based routine or action you want?
  • Placement and calibration: Follow the sensor maker’s location and calibration instructions; readings depend on placing the sensor appropriately.

Amazon’s Matter documentation supports humidity measurement as a device category, but compatibility still depends on the specific product and the Matter controller or hub in your home. A useful search phrase is “Alexa-compatible Matter humidity sensor,” followed by verification of the exact model’s humidity reporting and hub requirements. See Amazon’s Matter device category documentation.
