A practical documented route is Home Assistant with either its built-in ZHA integration or Zigbee2MQTT.
What do you need for a Zigbee hub?
Plan for three core parts and, if needed, a fourth:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Host: a computer or appliance that runs the home-automation software. Home Assistant can run on Raspberry Pi, Odroid, x86-64 computers, containers, and virtual machines. Home Assistant Green is an appliance option with Home Assistant installed.
- Coordinator: a Zigbee radio adapter that forms and manages one Zigbee network. It connects to the host and is separate from the computer running the software.
- Sensors: devices selected for the job, such as motion, contact, or temperature sensing.
- Optional routers: compatible mains-powered Zigbee devices, such as smart plugs, can relay messages and extend network coverage.
Home Assistant’s installation overview describes supported host approaches at Home Assistant installation. The coordinator is the component that communicates over Zigbee; it does not replace the host or the automation software.
Can you use Zigbee sensors without the manufacturer’s hub?
Often, yes: a sensor can join a network managed by a compatible third-party coordinator and software instead of the manufacturer’s hub. But the word “Zigbee” alone does not guarantee that a sensor will work with every system, or that all its features will be available. Check the exact model against the chosen software’s support information before buying.

ZHA, Home Assistant’s built-in Zigbee gateway integration, says it has no official list of every device that works out of the box. Some manufacturers use non-standard features that require special handling. ZHA also does not support devices that use only Zigbee Green Power or Zigbee Smart Energy profiles. See ZHA documentation for its compatibility and setup guidance.
A Zigbee device can be connected to only one coordinator and network at a time. If it was previously paired elsewhere, follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions before joining it to a different network.

Choose one Zigbee software route
For a given coordinator and network, choose either ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT rather than expecting both applications to operate the same coordinator simultaneously. Compare the exact sensor support, configuration needs, and maintenance workflow that matter to you; the official documentation does not establish that one route is universally better or supports every device.

Do you need a Zigbee coordinator?
Yes, if the host does not already provide a compatible Zigbee radio. The coordinator is the radio gateway for the network; the host runs the software that configures the network and uses sensor reports in automations. Home Assistant supports multiple coordinator adapters through ZHA, while Zigbee2MQTT documents adapters connected over USB, GPIO, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet. Confirm that your chosen software supports the adapter and its connection method.
Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is one current example. Home Assistant’s product documentation lists Zigbee 3.0 and Thread support and identifies a Silicon Labs MG24 radio with an ESP32-S3 USB-serial bridge. It says the device cannot run Zigbee and Thread simultaneously, and recommends dedicating a device to each protocol. Details are on the Connect ZBT-2 product page. Home Assistant identifies Connect ZBT-1 as no longer available and replaced by ZBT-2.

Set up the hub and add sensors
- Choose the host and install Home Assistant. Use a supported computer, container, or virtual machine, or an appliance such as Home Assistant Green. Follow the installation route for that host.
- Connect a coordinator supported by your selected integration. For ZHA, add the integration in Home Assistant and select the coordinator. If automatic detection fails, configure its serial device path and radio type. Where available, prefer the stable
/dev/serial/by-idpath. - For Zigbee2MQTT, configure its supported adapter and complete onboarding. Follow its current guide for the specific connection type and then connect it to Home Assistant through MQTT discovery.
- Put the sensor into pairing mode. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, then use the selected integration’s process to add the device. If it was joined to another network, reset it according to the manufacturer’s directions first.
- Verify the result in Home Assistant. Confirm that the device appears and that the expected entities or measurements are available before relying on it in an automation.
Improve Zigbee coverage and reliability
Zigbee networks have one coordinator. Mains-powered router devices can relay messages, while battery-powered sensors commonly act as end devices. A router may help when a sensor is distant from the coordinator, but coverage depends on the coordinator, network topology, placement, and building materials; documentation does not support a universal range or device-count promise.
- Place the coordinator where it has a clearer path to the devices you need to reach.
- Use a USB extension cable to move a USB coordinator away from the host and other equipment.
- Avoid positioning the coordinator next to USB 3.0 equipment; Home Assistant recommends separation to reduce interference.
- Add compatible mains-powered Zigbee routers where the network has observed dead spots, then check whether the sensor connects reliably.
Capacity varies with coordinator hardware and firmware, and is affected particularly by the number of devices connected directly to the coordinator versus through routers. Treat the actual layout and observed connectivity as more useful than a generic device limit.
Quick Recap
How to choose a practical setup
- Already have a suitable computer: use it as the host and add a supported coordinator; there is no need to buy a separate appliance just to create the hub.
- Want an appliance-style setup: Home Assistant Green is a host with Home Assistant preinstalled, but it still needs a Zigbee coordinator radio for Zigbee sensors.
- Need sensor support to drive the decision: check the precise sensor model and required features against ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT before choosing the software and adapter.
- Need to place the radio away from the host: consider a USB extension cable for a USB coordinator, or a network-connected adapter only when it is supported by the software you choose.
- Considering Zigbee and Thread: Connect ZBT-2 supports both protocols, but Home Assistant says it cannot operate both at once; plan on a dedicated device per protocol if you need both networks concurrently.
