“Mechanical washing machine” can mean a washer with manual controls, or the mechanical action inside any washer that moves clothes through water. What “mechanical” means when shopping for a washer
A washer’s control style and its washing action are different things. A dial or physical buttons may make a machine feel simpler to operate, but they do not by themselves establish that it is more reliable, easier to repair or more efficient. Those qualities need to be assessed from the specific model’s documentation and specifications.

Compare like-sized models with the EnergyGuide label
ENERGY STAR recommends using the yellow EnergyGuide label to compare a model’s energy use and estimated annual operating costs. Compare washers that are similar in capacity and configuration; otherwise, the figures may not be a useful like-for-like comparison. An estimate is a comparison aid, not a promise of what your household will pay.

Read the efficiency measures correctly
- IMEF (Integrated Modified Energy Factor): A higher value indicates greater energy efficiency, according to ENERGY STAR.
- IWF (Integrated Water Factor): This measures gallons of water used per cubic foot of capacity; a lower value indicates better water efficiency.
Use the values when they are available for the models you are comparing, alongside the EnergyGuide estimate. Do not assume that certification alone identifies the control type or that one efficiency measure answers every question about operating cost.
Understand the ENERGY STAR comparisons
ENERGY STAR says certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers. For full-sized washers, it reports 14 gallons per load for certified models versus 20 gallons for a standard machine. Check capacity and installation fit
Choose capacity around the loads you typically wash rather than buying a drum size on efficiency claims alone. Measure the available width and depth, and account for installation constraints such as the space needed for hookups, doors and access. A model that fits its listed dimensions may still be unsuitable if the installation area does not provide the required clearance; check the manufacturer’s installation information for the exact unit.

Once you have a capacity and efficiency range, compare the actual control panel and documentation for each model. A current model comparison should use the same criteria for every candidate:
