If smoke is entering a home, the most effective step is to stop smoking indoors. A properly sized air cleaner may reduce some airborne pollutants, but it cannot make indoor smoking safe or clear smoke residue from a building’s surfaces and furnishings.
What a humidifier does—and does not do
A humidifier’s job is to add water vapor. It is not a smoke-control device, and raising humidity does not remove smoke particles or the gases that contribute to odor. Fragrance can mask a smell without removing pollutants, and moisture is not a substitute for cleaning contaminated materials.
EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50% and monitoring it with a humidity gauge. Excess moisture can increase the likelihood of mold. A hygrometer can help manage humidity, but it will not address cigarette smoke. See the EPA’s Care for Your Air: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality.
What can reduce smoke in a room?
Stop indoor smoking at the source
EPA says: “Prohibiting the smoking of tobacco inside or near homes, buildings, vehicles and other enclosed spaces is the only way to eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke and the health risks that may come with it.” EPA identifies no known safe level of exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke. Ventilation and air cleaning can reduce some pollutants, but they do not eliminate exposure. Read EPA’s guidance on secondhand tobacco smoke and indoor air quality.

Use ventilation and filtration as supporting measures
Ventilation and air cleaning may reduce some airborne pollutants, but neither is a replacement for preventing smoke from entering the space. Smoke compounds can remain indoors and accumulate on hard surfaces or embed in soft materials. Visible smoke may clear while contamination remains, and odor alone does not reliably show whether pollutants are gone. Humidifier vs. air cleaner for cigarette smoke

How to choose an air cleaner for a smoke-affected room
- Match particle CADR to the room. Compare the cleaner’s tobacco-smoke Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) with the room area. CADR measures particle-cleaning performance, not odor or gas removal.
- Check for gas-targeted media. If odor or gaseous pollutants are a concern, look for activated carbon or another medium designed for gases. EPA notes there is no widely used rating system for gas-filter performance and that a substantial amount of carbon is important.
- Review replacement needs. Check the manufacturer’s filter replacement requirements and account for regular maintenance. A loaded or overdue filter may not perform as intended.
- Consider operating conditions. Higher fan speeds and longer run times filter more air. Choose settings and placement that are practical for the room, following the device’s instructions.
- Avoid ozone claims as a solution. EPA cautions against ozone-generating cleaners and some electronic technologies for smoke removal. See its information on ozone generators sold as air cleaners.
These criteria can help compare products, but they do not establish that any specific model will eliminate cigarette odor or exposure. A room air cleaner also does not remove residue already embedded in furnishings or deposited on surfaces.

Lingering odor can be a sign that smoke-related compounds remain in indoor materials, but smell cannot quantify exposure or prove that a space is safe. Air filtration addresses airborne pollutants; it does not clean walls, hard surfaces, carpets, upholstery, or other contaminated materials. Avoid relying on added fragrance or humidity to solve the problem. If smoke has repeatedly entered a home, consider the affected materials and the route by which smoke is getting inside, while preventing further indoor smoking or smoke entry.
