Ultrasonic and impeller models can send minerals from tap water into the air, sometimes leaving white dust. These are category-level expectations, not guarantees for every model: check the manual for the unit’s water requirements.
Which humidifier types work best with tap water?
The key difference is how each type turns water into moisture. EPA guidance says ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers can disperse minerals from their tanks into indoor air. Evaporative and steam vaporizer humidifiers are not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals. EPA has not tested evaporative humidifiers for mineral dispersal, so that expectation is not a guarantee.
| Humidifier type | What EPA says about mineral dispersal | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Evaporative | Not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals; EPA says it has not tested evaporative models for mineral dispersal. | A reasonable type to consider if you prefer tap water, but confirm the exact model’s manual. Some models require a replacement wick or filter. |
| Steam vaporizer | Not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals. | Steam and boiling water can burn children; keep the unit out of their reach. |
| Ultrasonic | Can disperse minerals from tap water into the air. | Minerals may appear as white dust and can contribute to scale inside the unit. |
| Impeller | Can disperse minerals from tap water into the air. | Minerals may appear as white dust and can contribute to scale inside the unit. |
These distinctions come from the EPA’s Use and Care of Home Humidifiers (June 2022). The agency says the possible health effects of dispersing minerals and microorganisms from home humidifiers are not fully understood. Its guidance supports reducing exposure and maintaining the unit; it does not establish that ordinary tap-water use causes illness.
Can you use tap water in a humidifier?
It depends on the model. Check the manufacturer’s instructions first: a category-level description cannot establish that a particular unit permits tap water. For ultrasonic or impeller models, EPA says tap-water minerals can be dispersed into the air. Scale inside a unit is another concern because mineral deposits can provide a place for microorganisms to grow.

White dust during operation can be a sign that minerals are being dispersed, particularly with ultrasonic and impeller units. It can also indicate that a demineralization cartridge or filter is not removing minerals effectively. Follow the model’s instructions for the right water and replacement parts.
What water should you use if your model needs lower-mineral water?
EPA recommends considering low-mineral water, such as bottled water labeled distilled, or a demineralization cartridge, cassette, or filter if the manufacturer supplies or recommends one. The options are not interchangeable:

- Distilled water: EPA identifies distillation as the most effective of the listed treatments for removing minerals. Distilled water has lower mineral content than most tap water.
- Deionized or reverse-osmosis water: These processes remove most minerals, but are generally less effective than distillation. On average, EPA expects these waters to contain more minerals than distilled water.
- Demineralization cartridge, cassette, or filter: Use one only if it is supplied or recommended for your model. EPA notes that mineral-removal effectiveness varies; white dust may mean the treatment is not working effectively.
- Other bottled water: “Purified” can refer to water produced by different processes, so the label alone does not specify mineral content. Spring, artesian, and mineral bottled waters have not been treated to remove minerals, according to EPA.

How to maintain a humidifier safely
Good maintenance matters whichever water you use. EPA recommends these steps for portable humidifiers; follow the model’s manual wherever it gives specific directions.

- Every day, empty the tank, wipe it dry, and refill it with fresh water.
- Clean the portable unit every third day. Remove scale, deposits, or film, and use only cleaning products or disinfectants allowed by the manufacturer.
- Rinse thoroughly after cleaning. EPA says surfaces that contact water may be cleaned with 3% hydrogen peroxide if the manufacturer provides no specific recommendation. Rinse thoroughly to avoid dispersing cleaning chemicals into the air.
These are EPA recommendations, not a substitute for model-specific instructions. See Use and Care of Home Humidifiers for the agency’s full guidance.
How much humidity should you aim for?
Use a humidifier only when needed and adjust it for the room’s conditions. EPA’s indoor air quality guidance recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. Condensation on windows, walls, or pipes can signal excessive humidity.

How to choose a humidifier for tap water
- Start with the manual: confirm whether the exact model allows tap water and whether it needs a particular filter or wick.
- Consider an evaporative model: EPA says this type is not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals, while noting it has not tested evaporative models for mineral dispersal.
- If choosing an ultrasonic or impeller model: account for possible mineral dispersal and check whether the manufacturer recommends distilled water or a compatible demineralization treatment.
- Check maintenance requirements: identify model-specific cleaning directions and any replacement wick, filter, or cartridge before buying.
- For a steam vaporizer: consider the burn risk if children can reach the appliance.
EPA’s guidance compares humidifier mechanisms and water-treatment approaches; it does not evaluate current models for room coverage, noise, cleaning effort, filter cost, or purchase price. Those details require checking current manufacturer specifications for the models you are considering.
