Broome-Tioga BOCES held its annual construction-technology career day on October 7, 2026, at the Broome County Highway Department in Broome County, New York. Students in grades 9–12 tried heavy equipment under professional supervision and explored hands-on work such as roof shingling, along with the planning and office roles that help construction projects move forward.
What students did at the career day
Local trade unions and companies introduced students to construction work through supervised activities. Students operated bulldozers, excavators and dump trucks with trained professionals present. They also tried tasks beyond equipment operation: Johnson City High School junior Kyora Rivera, for example, shingled a roof for the first time.

Chenango Valley High School senior Grady Banovic described learning to use machinery and picking up rocks with the equipment’s scoops as rewarding. Rivera recommended the experience even for students who may not plan to enter construction, saying it could be useful to know about the work regardless of their eventual career choice.

The event aimed to show students the range of work involved in construction, not just the machinery. Broome-Tioga BOCES science teacher Eric Thompson pointed to people who plan projects, obtain permits, communicate with others and provide office support. Those responsibilities are part of the workforce needed to carry construction projects through.

What is known about attendance and participation
The 2026 report does not give an attendance total, explain how students were selected or provide registration details. It also does not establish whether the event was open to the general public or list all 2026 partners.
A separate WBNG report said approximately 600 students attended the 2025 career day and named several collaborators, including the New York State Department of Transportation, Broome County Highway Department, Broome-Tioga Workforce New York and Broome-Tioga BOCES Career Development Center. That figure and partner list apply to 2025; they do not establish the 2026 attendance or its full organizer roster.
