AI use is moving into production at some U.S. architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) firms, but broad integration remains uncommon. Bluebeam’s 2026 release on its 2027 Building the Future: Bluebeam AEC Technology Outlook Report says 28% of surveyed organizations had AI in production and just 7% had embedded it across multiple core workflows. The findings point to a gap between putting AI to work and making it part of everyday project delivery.
What the survey says about AI adoption
Bluebeam, part of Nemetschek Group, released the report findings on October 13, 2026. The survey was conducted by Hanover Research in July 2026 and included 750 U.S. AEC technology decision-makers at manager level or above. The percentages are survey results, not independently verified measures of the entire construction industry.

The two adoption figures describe different stages. The 28% figure covers organizations with AI in production; 7% had embedded AI across multiple core workflows. In other words, putting an AI application into live use does not necessarily mean it is integrated across the work that teams perform repeatedly.

The release says detailed base sizes for findings drawn from subsets of respondents appear in the full report, which was not available alongside the release.

What benefits AI users reported
Among organizations using AI, 64% reported greater cost predictability and 58% reported earlier identification of risks and issues. These are reported benefits, not independently measured product outcomes or proof that AI alone caused the improvements.
The release also says 40% of organizations running AI in production reported savings exceeding $500,000. It does not specify the period covered or define how savings were calculated in the release. Treat the figure as a survey response from a subset of firms already using AI in production—not as an annual savings estimate or a forecast for other companies.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Why firms struggle to scale AI
Respondents cited practical obstacles that can affect whether a promising pilot becomes routine project work. The release reports these barriers to scaling:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Reported barrier | Share citing it |
|---|---|
| High implementation costs | 50% |
| Lack of internal AI skills | 34% |
| Employee resistance to change | 22% |
| Security and compliance concerns | 18% |
| Difficulty integrating AI into daily project workflows | 15% |
Among organizations that had reached production, integration with existing systems and tools was the most cited factor in getting there, at 47%. The contrast is instructive: integration can be a decisive step toward production, while workflow integration remains a challenge for some firms trying to scale. The figures refer to different respondent groups and should not be read as a direct comparison.

Workflow fit and the construction labor gap
The survey’s broader findings make workflow fit central to the AI discussion. Bluebeam reports that 97% of respondents said new tools must fit existing workflows. Meanwhile, 80% said disconnected tools slow decisions and reduce efficiency, and 79% said disconnected tools increase project risk. These are respondent views, not measured effects of any particular software.
Skills are another constraint. The release says 82% of surveyed firms reported that labor and skills shortages limit project delivery. It also reports that 93% prioritize digital tool proficiency in recruitment, while 77% say it is the hardest skill to find. Those results suggest that adopting AI is not only a software decision: organizations also need people who can use digital tools in the context of real project work.

How construction firms can assess AI readiness
The report does not rank vendors or recommend a specific platform. Its findings do, however, suggest a practical set of questions to ask before expanding an AI pilot:
- Integration: Can the tool work with the systems and project information teams already use, or will it create another disconnected destination?
- Workflow fit: Does it support an existing task and handoff in the project process, with a clear place for people to review its output?
- Cost: What implementation, integration, training and ongoing operating costs would be involved, and what measurable outcome would justify them?
- Data quality: Is the information needed for the use case accessible, consistent and suitable for the task?
- Security and compliance: Are the tool’s data handling and access controls compatible with the organization’s obligations?
- Staff capability: Who will configure, oversee and use the system, and what digital or AI skills will those responsibilities require?
- Evidence of value: How will the organization measure a specific outcome—such as earlier issue detection or improved cost predictability—without assuming that reported survey benefits will automatically transfer?
A pilot that answers these questions can make the next decision more concrete: adjust the workflow, address a skills or data gap, expand to another use case, or stop if the costs and risks outweigh the benefit. That approach aligns the scale-up decision with the report’s central tension: production use is growing, but embedding AI across core workflows is a separate and harder step.

What the report can—and cannot—establish
The findings are useful as a snapshot of what surveyed U.S. AEC technology decision-makers reported in July 2026. They do not establish that every construction firm has the same adoption rate, that AI caused reported savings, or that any particular product will deliver the listed benefits. The release does not provide the full questionnaire, detailed subgroup bases or definitions for the savings measure; those details are referenced as part of the full report.
For construction leaders, the clearest takeaway is not simply that AI has arrived. It is that reaching production is only one milestone. To scale, firms must connect tools to project systems and workflows, account for cost and security, and build the skills needed to use them reliably.
