Start with your utility’s Consumer Confidence Report—or test private-well water independently—then compare the exact model’s reduction claims rather than choosing by a certification logo alone.
Start with the water problem, not the product
Public-water customers should first read their utility’s Consumer Confidence Report. If you use a private well, or the report does not answer a specific concern, independent laboratory testing can identify what needs treatment. A filter that improves chlorine taste may not reduce lead, microbes, fluoride or other dissolved contaminants.

NSF explains that certification to an NSF/ANSI standard or protocol does not mean a system reduces every possible contaminant. Check the model’s label, performance data sheet or certifier directory for the exact substance and reduction percentage you need.

Five shortlist options for different household needs
Good Housekeeping’s August 17, 2026 review selected the following models for different use cases. Its product-specific figures are editorial findings and manufacturer or certification claims; verify the precise model and current documentation before relying on a contaminant-reduction statement.

Aquasana 3-Stage Max Flow Under Sink Water Filter — best for water on demand
This under-sink system supplies filtered water through a separate dispenser, so you do not have to refill a pitcher. Good Housekeeping describes three-stage filtration and reports NSF certification for 77 contaminants, with replacement filters estimated at about $149 per year. Treat those figures as the review’s report, not as an independent test.
- Fit: Allow cabinet space and expect possible plumbing work or a drilled hole for the dedicated faucet.
- Best for: Households that use a lot of filtered water for drinking and cooking.
- Trade-off: Installation is more involved, and replacement expense is ongoing.
Brita Everyday Elite Water Filter Pitcher — best for a refillable pitcher
Good Housekeeping’s pitcher pick is a 10-cup model. The review says the filter is certified to capture more than 30 contaminants and records 38 seconds per cup in its test; it also reports a six-month replacement interval. Those numbers are specific to the reviewed setup and should be checked against the current filter documentation.

Match the certification to the contaminant
NSF/ANSI 42 generally addresses aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor. NSF/ANSI 53 covers specified health-effect claims, including lead reduction when the exact claim is listed. NSF/ANSI 58 applies to reverse-osmosis systems, NSF/ANSI 55 to ultraviolet treatment and NSF/ANSI 62 to distillation. These standards are not a ranking, and a number does not mean every contaminant is removed.

- Cleaner Water For Less: This PUR water filter dispenser gives you better-tasting filtered water from your tap while helping reduce reliance on bottled water and single-use plastic waste
- Powerful 2-in-1 Drinking Water Filter for Better-Tasting Water: This water filter system is IAPMO certified to reduce chlorine, mercury, copper, and zinc, which can cause bad taste and odor in your drinking water
- Compatible Does Not Mean Comparable: Genuine PUR water dispenser replacement filters are certified to reduce 15 chemical and physical substances from tap water and are the only filters certified for use with the PUR 30-Cup water filtration system
EPA advises looking for NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction, including dissolved lead, and NSF/ANSI 42 Class I for particulate reduction. A whole-house filter also cannot remove lead introduced by lead-containing plumbing inside the building. CDC notes that pitcher and refrigerator filters commonly use activated carbon, often mainly to improve taste and smell; germ reduction and chemical reduction are separate functions, so inspect the label for the specific concern.

- Installation: Faucet models need a compatible connection; under-sink units may require plumbing changes and a separate faucet; countertop RO requires manual filling and reject-water handling.
- Replacement: EPA’s point-of-use guidance gives typical lives of two to six months for faucet and pitcher filters, six to 24-plus months for under-sink filters and six months for refrigerator filters. Actual life varies with model, usage and water quality.
- Care: Replace cartridges or membranes on schedule and clean reservoirs as directed. A neglected filter may stop performing as intended and can contribute to water-quality problems.
- Availability: Confirm that compatible replacement cartridges or membranes are sold where you live before committing to a proprietary format.
EPA’s example prices in its point-of-use handout are dated February 2024, so they should not be treated as current prices. Use the manufacturer’s current replacement schedule and local purchase price when calculating annual cost.
Understand reverse-osmosis water waste
RO can reduce specified dissolved contaminants, but all RO systems generate some reject water. EPA estimates that a typical point-of-use RO system produces at least five gallons of waste for every gallon treated. WaterSense-labeled RO systems generate 2.3 gallons or less of waste per gallon treated. A countertop model also requires you to empty its wastewater tank, while an under-sink model generally sends reject water to a drain.
A practical buying checklist
- Obtain your utility report or an independent well-water test.
- Write down the exact contaminant or taste problem to solve.
- Find a model whose current performance data sheet names that contaminant and reduction claim.
- Measure faucet connections, counter space, cabinet clearance and reservoir access.
- Choose between on-demand filtration, manual batch filling and RO based on your household’s routine.
- Calculate annual cartridge or membrane cost using the model’s stated life and your expected volume.
- Set a replacement reminder and follow cleaning instructions from the manufacturer.
Frequently asked questions
Does a higher NSF number mean a better filter?
No. The number identifies a standard’s scope. The contaminant claim attached to the exact model is what matters.
Can a pitcher filter make unsafe well water safe?
Do not assume it can. Test the well water first and select treatment for the contaminants found; activated-carbon pitchers are often designed primarily for taste and odor.
Are faucet filters universal?
No. Check the faucet adapter requirements. Pull-down spray faucets are specifically incompatible with the reviewed Culligan mount, and other models also have connection limits.
