Birmingham City FC’s proposed Powerhouse Stadium is a 62,000-capacity concept planned for Bordesley Green, East Birmingham. Its striking design—nicknamed the “spaceship”—features chimney-like forms, a retractable roof and a moveable pitch. The project is still in pre-application consultation: it has not been established as approved, and Birmingham City Council’s 2030/31 completion target is a plan, not a confirmed opening date.

Where is the proposed stadium, and what is it called?

The Powerhouse Stadium is planned for Bordesley Green in East Birmingham, as the anchor venue of the wider Sports Quarter. The project team uses the name Powerhouse Stadium; “spaceship” is a media shorthand for the concept’s sculptural appearance. The official project page describes the wider scheme and its proposed venue.

What is the proposed design?

The concept was developed by Heatherwick Studio and MANICA Architecture in collaboration with writer and filmmaker Steven Knight. Its latest stated capacity is 62,000. Earlier materials described a 60,000-capacity stadium, so the figures reflect different publication dates rather than a confirmed final capacity: the current project page and Birmingham City Council’s 2026 prospectus use 62,000, while the UK Government’s 2025 announcement and Birmingham City FC’s 2024/25 Annual Review used 60,000. The Council prospectus and the Government announcement provide those respective figures.

Roof, pitch and event flexibility

The design vision proposes a retractable roof and a moveable pitch. The project team says these elements are intended to support major sporting and entertainment events. They remain proposed features of a concept, not confirmed specifications for an approved or completed venue.

Chimneys and public spaces

The concept uses prominent chimney forms as references to the area’s industrial heritage, with structural and venue functions. One is proposed to include a lift to a high bar. The project’s community vision also includes food markets, restaurants and cafés, social spaces and children’s play areas. These are design intentions described by the project team; their final form and delivery are not yet established.

Has the stadium been approved?

No planning decision for the stadium is established in the sources cited here. The official project page says engagement and consultation with local people, fans, political representatives and planning officers is under way before a planning application is lodged. That means the concept is not the same as a consented construction scheme: details can change through design development and the planning process.

Once an application is submitted, its documents and decisions can be checked through Birmingham City Council’s planning portal.

When could it open?

Birmingham City Council’s 2026 Central Heart prospectus gives a target completion for the 2030/31 football season. This is a published target, not a confirmed opening date. The reviewed sources do not establish a planning determination, construction start, final design, final capacity or opening date.

What wider benefits are being forecast?

Birmingham City Council’s 2026 prospectus and a 2025 UK Government announcement each report a forecast of 8,400 jobs associated with the wider Sports Quarter or regeneration project. This is a projection, not a count of jobs already created or a verified stadium-only jobs figure. The Government also described £100 million invested by Knighthead into East Birmingham regeneration; that figure concerns the regeneration project, not stadium-only construction spending.

Those wider figures should be read separately from what is known about the venue itself: the stadium remains a proposal within a larger development, and its planning and delivery milestones are still ahead.
