Everything Worth Knowing About Lockwire: Aircraft Safety Wire Basics

Lockwire is a secondary mechanical restraint, not a substitute for correct torque. Learn the aircraft safety-wire principles and FAA cautions that matter.

Lockwire—called safety wire in FAA aircraft-maintenance guidance—is a mechanical way to help keep fasteners and components from loosening. It does not replace correct torque: the fastener must first be installed as specified, and the wire must be routed and tensioned so it resists the direction the part could turn loose.

What lockwire does—and what it does not do

Lockwire connects or passes around secured components so that movement toward loosening is resisted by the wire. Its effectiveness depends on the route and tension, not simply on the presence of wire. A poorly routed or slack wire may fail to restrain the part.

Safety wire is a secondary retention method, not a way to tighten a fastener or compensate for an incorrectly torqued one. The FAA explains that improperly secured aircraft components can compromise powerplant or control-system operation and lead to system or component failures in its Safety Wire briefing.

Follow the instructions that apply to the aircraft

For aircraft maintenance, use the applicable manufacturer maintenance or repair instructions and the aircraft’s approved maintenance data. FAA Advisory Circular 43.13-1B describes acceptable inspection and repair methods for nonpressurized areas of civil aircraft when manufacturer repair or maintenance instructions are absent; it is not a universal substitute for aircraft-specific instructions. The National Transportation Library’s record for AC 43.13-1B describes that scope. The circular was issued September 8, 1998, so confirm which instructions apply to the specific aircraft and task before using a procedure.

Do not assume one wire diameter, alloy, twist count, routing pattern, or tool is right for every application. Those details must come from the applicable instructions and equipment requirements.

Prepare the fastener before installing wire

Install and torque the fastener to the specified value before securing it. If a bolt hole and the mating hole do not align, do not loosen or overtighten a correctly torqued fastener just to make the holes line up. AC 43.13-1B advises trying another bolt that permits alignment when the holes cannot be aligned within torque limits.

Route and tension the wire to resist loosening

The wire’s route must oppose the direction in which the secured part could loosen. Keep it taut while twisting, then secure it with light tension. FAA guidance says safety wire must be tight after installation to help prevent failure from rubbing or vibration, but it must not be overstressed. Excessive twisting weakens the wire, and wire twisted too tightly can fail under vibration.

  • Avoid nicking, kinking, or otherwise mutilating the wire.
  • Do not twist it more than the applicable instructions call for.
  • Bend exposed ends under and inward so they do not leave sharp or projecting points.

Use a wire twister carefully

A wire twister grips and locks the wire in its jaws; pulling its knob rotates the spiral rod and twists the wire. Keep the wire under control while working. FAA guidance warns that if more than three inches of wire extends beyond the jaws, it should be loosely wrapped around the pliers to reduce whipping and possible injury. Avoid excessive twisting, which can weaken the wire.

Choosing wire and a tool

The relevant physical items are the safety wire and, when appropriate for the task, a wire-twisting tool. Select wire by the material, diameter, length, and application requirements in the applicable instructions; choose a tool compatible with both the wire and the task. FAA guidance supports these categories but does not establish consumer product rankings or approve a particular brand, model, or listing for a specific aircraft.
