For a dramatic indoor foliage plant, start with the light and watering conditions you can actually provide, then check the exact plant name against a pet-toxicity source. Monstera deliciosa is one well-documented large-leaf option; several other commonly recommended houseplants suit lower-light spaces, but the available sources do not verify a definitive set of 13 big-leaf species. The examples below are therefore a practical, independently selected starting point—not a reconstruction of an original 13-plant list.

Which big-leaf plants can you grow indoors?

“Big-leaf” describes a look rather than a standardized plant category. Some plants have broad, dramatic blades; others make an impact through upright foliage or a climbing growth habit. The U.S. Botanic Garden groups houseplants by broad light and water needs, but those categories do not establish that every recommended plant has large leaves or will thrive in every room. Use them as a first filter, not a guarantee.

Monstera deliciosa: a documented large-leaf choice

Monstera deliciosa is a climbing vine whose mature leaves UF/IFAS reports as 10 to 35 inches long. The publication notes that it is commonly used to decorate homes and offices in Florida. Plan for a climbing growth habit and room for the plant to spread; the source does not give a universal indoor size or support specification. UF/IFAS Monstera deliciosa guidance also warns that its parts are toxic to dogs, cats, and humans if ingested.

Broadly recommended foliage plants

The U.S. Botanic Garden’s recommendations include the plants below. Its classifications are broad light and water categories; they are not species-specific watering schedules, size forecasts, or proof that each plant is a large-leaf specimen.

Ponytail palm, corn plant, dracaena, arrowhead plant, and peace lily See the garden’s recommendations for each plant’s category Included in the garden’s houseplant recommendations; their individual light and water categories are not specified here.

See the U.S. Botanic Garden houseplant recommendations for its category details. A room’s actual light, the plant’s cultivar, and care conditions can affect results, so avoid treating a broad category as a precise care prescription.

How to choose for your room and routine

  1. Assess the light where the plant will sit. Use the U.S. Botanic Garden’s low- and medium-light groupings as a starting point, then consider how much usable light reaches that exact spot. Do not assume that “low light” means no light.
  2. Be honest about watering. Choose a plant whose broad water category fits your habits, and consult a reliable species-specific care source for actual watering guidance. The garden’s categories do not provide a watering interval.
  3. Allow for the growth habit. A climbing Monstera needs room to spread and may need support as it grows. For the other listed plants, the cited garden page does not establish mature indoor dimensions; check the exact species and cultivar before choosing a location.
  4. Check pet risk by exact name. Search the plant’s botanical or common name in the ASPCA database before bringing it home. Do not infer that a plant is safe just because it is absent from a list.

What should pet owners know?

The ASPCA cautions that its toxic-plant list is not all-inclusive and advises checking the plant name. It also notes that eating any plant material can cause gastrointestinal upset in dogs or cats. Monstera deliciosa has a specific warning from UF/IFAS: its parts are toxic to dogs, cats, and humans if ingested. Keep potentially harmful plants out of reach, and contact a veterinarian or poison-control service if an animal eats a plant.

Do houseplants clean indoor air?

Do not choose a large-leaf plant as a substitute for ventilation or for reducing indoor pollution sources. The Royal Horticultural Society says natural ventilation and reducing pollutant sources are generally more effective strategies for improving indoor air quality than relying on plants alone. It also notes that meaningful improvement may require many plants under specific conditions. RHS guidance on houseplants and air quality discusses the limits of applying plant studies to ordinary homes.

UF/IFAS reports that a nine-week study found a 70% decrease in VOCs and a 30% decrease in particulate matter associated with indoor plants. Those are results reported for that study, not a forecast for a typical home. The source is a 2023 UF/IFAS publication reporting findings from Pegas et al. (2012); it does not establish that a few houseplants will produce the same effect in a different room or building. UF/IFAS indoor plants and air-quality publication.
