A tall indoor plant can give a room a deliberate focal point, but there is no single care category called “tall plant.” Choose by matching the plant’s silhouette and footprint to the room, then check its light needs and any pet-safety concerns. The options below focus on palms and weeping fig, for which the research provides specific guidance.

Compare the plants by room fit

Plant Room and visual fit Light and care notes Pet-safety information
Areca palm (Dypsis lutescens) Full, tropical-looking specimen Needs good light. Follow palm watering guidance below. ASPCA lists it as non-toxic to cats and dogs. “Non-toxic” does not mean edible or risk-free.
Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) Upright, composed palm; an option where light is lower Tolerates fairly low light and cooler temperatures and drier atmospheres, according to RHS. This research did not verify a species-specific ASPCA listing. Do not infer its pet status from areca palm.
Parlour palm (Chamaedorea elegans) Lower-light-tolerant palm option Tolerates fairly low light, according to RHS. This research did not verify a species-specific pet-safety listing.
Weeping fig (Ficus species) Leafy indoor tree, if its light and upkeep suit the room The sources reviewed here do not establish specific care recommendations for it. ASPCA lists weeping fig as toxic to cats and dogs.

Common plant names can be used inconsistently, so check the botanical name on the plant label. The sources do not establish reliable mature indoor heights, sale sizes, or prices for these options; confirm those details for the exact species and plant before buying.

Match the plant to the room’s light

Choose for the light you actually have. RHS says most palms prefer bright, indirect light in summer. Parlour palms and kentia palms can tolerate fairly low light, while areca palms need good light. A plant that needs good light is a poor fit for a dim corner.

RHS cautions that bright direct sun through glass can scorch palm leaves. Keep tender palms away from radiators and draughts. For the tender palms covered by its guidance, RHS gives a minimum winter night temperature of 10–13°C (50–55°F), with slightly higher minimums for Chamaedorea, Howea, and Cocos.

Care guidance for indoor palms

Water according to the season and the condition of the compost rather than following a fixed schedule. RHS recommends letting the compost surface dry slightly before watering in winter. In summer, keep the compost from drying out, but do not leave the palm standing in excess water. These are palm-care recommendations, not universal instructions for every tall houseplant.

RHS suggests peat-free indoor plant potting media. It advises repotting palms every two years in early spring if they are pot-bound, until they are in 20–30 cm pots; larger containers need repotting less often. Follow the advice for the plant and container you have.

Symptoms can have more than one cause. RHS notes that brown, dry tips may be associated with underwatering or dry air; brown spots may result from overwatering or sudden chilling; and wilting can indicate dry conditions or waterlogging. Treat these as clues, not diagnoses.

Check pet safety by species

Do not assume that plants in the same broad group share the same pet-safety status. ASPCA lists areca palm as non-toxic to cats and dogs, and weeping fig as toxic to cats and dogs; its weeping fig listing names ficin and ficusin as toxic principles. The research did not verify species-specific ASPCA listings for kentia or parlour palm, so check the exact plant rather than guessing.

ASPCA also identifies dumb cane, calla lily, pothos, peace lily, Chinese evergreen, and elephant ear as examples of calcium oxalate-containing houseplants. Its 2019 guidance says fiddle leaf fig and spider plant can cause mild gastrointestinal irritation if pets ingest them, and fiddle leaf fig sap may irritate skin. If a pet may chew a plant, verify its exact identity and consult a veterinarian or animal poison-control resource with concerns.

Buying and placing a tall indoor plant

  1. Assess the room. Note its natural light, drafts, heat sources, and the space available for the plant’s spread.
  2. Choose for the conditions. For a lower-light room, consider a palm the RHS identifies as tolerant of fairly low light, such as kentia or parlour palm. Do not choose an areca palm for a dim corner.
  3. Check the plant identity. Confirm the botanical name, especially if pet safety matters. Do not treat missing species-specific information as proof of safety.
  4. Plan care and placement. Keep palms away from radiators and draughts, avoid excess standing water, and leave enough room for the plant to grow without forcing it into an unsuitable location.

How should I water an indoor palm?

RHS recommends letting the compost surface dry slightly before watering in winter. In summer, keep compost from drying out while avoiding excess water standing around the plant. This guidance applies to palms, not all indoor plants.

Are indoor palms safe for cats and dogs?

Safety depends on the species. ASPCA lists areca palm as non-toxic to cats and dogs, but the sources reviewed here did not verify species-specific pet-safety listings for kentia or parlour palm. Check the exact plant rather than assuming all palms have the same status.

Is weeping fig toxic to pets?

ASPCA lists weeping fig as toxic to cats and dogs and names ficin and ficusin as toxic principles. Verify the plant’s identity and keep it away from pets that may chew it.

Why might a palm develop brown tips or spots?

RHS notes that brown, dry tips may be associated with underwatering or dry air, while brown spots may result from overwatering or sudden chilling. These symptoms can have different causes, so treat them as clues rather than a diagnosis.
