The Coolaroo HDPE models covered here are explicitly marked “Waterproof: No,” while Shade Sails LLC says its knitted shade cloth is porous and lets some moisture through. If you need reliable rain cover, don’t choose a sail based on the word “weatherproof” or its UV rating: verify that the complete product, including seams and edges, is explicitly designed and warranted to keep water out.
Are shade sails waterproof?
Not necessarily. “Weatherproof” can describe a product intended for outdoor exposure without promising that rain cannot pass through it. Shade Sails LLC describes its knitted fabric as porous: it sheds much of the rain toward the perimeter but lets some moisture through. Coolaroo likewise marks the two HDPE shade sails below “Waterproof: No,” even though one is labeled weatherproof. Shade Sails LLC’s FAQ and the Coolaroo RTH product listing make the distinction important for buyers.

For rain protection, check the exact product page for an explicit water-impermeability claim and the conditions attached to it. The fabric alone is not the whole system: seams, edges, attachment details, slope, and drainage affect whether water gets beneath or pools on the cover. The products in this comparison do not establish a verified waterproof winner.
What is the best waterproof shade sail?
No model in the available product information can be recommended as a verified waterproof sail. The following are shade options, not proven rainproof covers. Their figures are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results.

- 【About Measurement】Please refer to the diagrams before purchasing. To ensure you select the correct size, you’ll need to leave 0.5-1 ft of space for accessories to avoid buying an oversized shade. PLEASE NOTE, due to the characteristics of this fabric, there may be a tolerance of ±2 inch from the outer edge of one D-ring to the outer edge of the other D-ring
- 【Waterproof】The shade sail is made of 160GSM PES material, PU coated, blocks up to 98% of UV rays, and has a shade rate of 90%- 95% (white series 85%-90%). It is resistant to light rain and has a water pressure resistance of 400 kPa. Please do not use it in heavy rain or storms
- 【Installation】Waterproof shade sails need to be installed at a 30-degree angle with maximum tension to allow run off and face up. Otherwise the water may accumulate and affect the use of the shade canopy
- 【Splicing Process】To improve the waterproof performance, we use hot-melt adhesive and splicing process. Most sizes consist of two pieces of shade fabric, but you don't have to worry about leaks at the splice
- 【Customizable】We offer various sizes of customized waterproof shade sails to meet your shade needs in different areas. If you are unsure about the size you need, please contact us first. And please note that hardware is not included

| Coolaroo RTH, 16 ft 5 in triangle, Pebble | HDPE; up to 90% UV block; pre-attached ropes; five-year UV-degradation warranty stated on its product page. Coolaroo marks it weatherproof and “Waterproof: No.” | A ready-to-hang UV shade sail, not a waterproof rain cover. |
| Coolaroo Coolhaven, 12 ft triangle, Sahara | HDPE; up to 95% UV block; 316 stainless steel D-rings, curved sides, and polyester webbing; accessories sold separately; seven-year UV-degradation warranty stated on its product page. The listing marks it “Waterproof: No.” | A more specified HDPE shade option, but not a waterproof rain cover according to the listing. Check current availability. |
| Shade Sails LLC Skyclipse 320 | The manufacturer’s comparison chart describes DIY residential use, 90–95% shade factor, 320 g/m² fabric, and no wind-resistance rating. It lists a one-year defects, two-year UV-degradation, and ten-year fabric warranty, plus a 6–8-year stated life expectancy. | The chart does not establish waterproof performance. |
| Shade Sails LLC Skyclipse 370 | The manufacturer’s comparison chart describes commercial or professional residential use, up to 90% shade factor, 370 g/m² fabric, and an 85 mph wind-resistance claim. It lists a one-year defects, two-year UV-degradation, and ten-year fabric warranty, plus an 8–10-year stated life expectancy. | The chart does not establish waterproof performance. Treat the wind and lifespan figures as manufacturer claims, not independent findings. |
Coolaroo’s stated UV-block levels and Shade Sails LLC’s shade-factor figures describe shade performance, not water exclusion. Likewise, a wind claim or fabric warranty does not prove that a sail will keep rain out.
How to choose a sail for your site
Start with the job the cover must do. If the priority is shade, compare fabric, UV or shade claims, dimensions, reinforcement, included accessories, warranty terms, and the manufacturer’s installation guidance. If the priority is staying dry, require explicit waterproof specifications for the complete system; if the seller does not substantiate that claim, treat the product as shade cloth rather than a rain cover.
- Read the exact model listing. Do not infer water performance from “weatherproof,” fabric weight, or another model in the same brand family.
- Check what the warranty covers. A UV-degradation or fabric warranty is not automatically a promise of whole-sail service life or leak-free performance. Shade Sails LLC’s comparison chart lists model-level terms, while its separate warranty page describes one year for defects or faulty workmanship/materials and two years for UV degradation, with installation-related exclusions. The FAQ also discusses ten-year fabric warranties in some product lines and notes that stitching may fail earlier. Confirm the current warranty for the exact model and read its exclusions.
- Match the installation to the site. Dimensions, attachment points, support structure, exposure, drainage, and hardware all matter. A sail’s rating cannot substitute for assessing the structure and conditions where it will be installed.
What slope does a shade sail need?
Shade Sails LLC recommends a 1:4 slope in its installation guidance to help runoff. It also warns that inadequate slope can cause puddling, excess sag, and membrane failure, and that pooled water can stretch a sail. The company recommends a twisted form where possible. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a universal code or engineering specification. See its measuring instructions, helpful hints, and design parameters.
Drainage geometry matters even when the fabric sheds rain: a low spot that holds water can load and deform the sail. Follow the specific manufacturer’s design guidance and have the installation assessed where the structure, exposure, or consequences of failure warrant professional input.

What hardware and supports does installation require?
Attachment hardware must be compatible with the sail and its support structure, and appropriate for the loads and exposure at the site. Shade Sails LLC’s custom-order process describes turnbuckles and shackles for fitting and tensioning; that does not make a generic hardware kit suitable for every installation. Check hardware material, rated capacity, connection details, and compatibility with the sail and anchors.
Before final measurement for a custom sail, Shade Sails LLC advises checking with the local building department because permits may be required, and installing fixing points before taking final measurements. It also cautions that wind loads can be substantial. Its guidance pages give different approximate ranges—10–18 lb/ft² in one and 5.5–15 lb/ft² in another—so neither should be used as a universal design value. Use site-specific engineering and local requirements where needed. Measuring instructions and the custom-sail order form describe the company’s process.
For its ready-to-hang sail, Coolaroo instructs buyers to select attachment points aligned with the sail dimensions and capable of withstanding occasional windy conditions, then pull the ropes tight to reduce sag. This is product guidance, not a substitute for assessing the supports and site. See the Coolaroo installation instructions.
When a shade sail is the wrong choice
If the area beneath must remain dry, a porous knitted shade sail is not a dependable choice simply because it sheds some rain. Select a cover whose manufacturer explicitly specifies water impermeability for the full installed system, including seams and edges, and follow its drainage and installation requirements. None of the models compared above is substantiated as that kind of cover.
