Check the manufacturer’s capacity for the exact rope type first, then compare cutting design, handling, and maintenance support. A dedicated wire rope cutter is designed to shear stranded rope; do not assume a general-purpose cable cutter can do the job.
How to choose a wire rope cutter
- Identify the rope. Measure its outside diameter and determine its construction, including core type, material, and any stated strength or resistance rating.
- Check the exact model’s capacity chart. Match all the rope details to the manufacturer’s listed limits. A maximum diameter for one rope construction does not establish capacity for another.
- Compare cutting design and handling. Look for a manufacturer-described shear action and consider tool size, leverage, access to the cut location, and whether the tool suits the work.
- Check maintenance and safety information. Confirm parts availability and follow the maker’s use, cleaning, and storage directions. Wear eye protection.
What size cable cutter do I need?
It depends on the cable’s diameter and application—and, for wire rope, its construction and strength as well. FELCO’s product-range guidance distinguishes smaller precision cutters from larger, higher-leverage cutters, but the specific model’s capacity chart is the deciding reference. [FELCO cable cutters]
Manufacturer-listed wire rope cutter examples
These specifications illustrate why model and rope type matter. They come from manufacturer information or a product sheet, not comparative testing, and the figures should not be treated as equivalent performance results.
| Tool | Published capacity or limits | Documented details |
|---|---|---|
| Klein Tools 63035SC dedicated wire rope cutter | Up to 9/32 inch (7.1 mm), per Klein’s current product specification accessed 2026 | Klein describes shear-type blades for square, clean cuts, forged construction, and a pin-set hinge nut for blade tension. The same product information warns users to wear approved eye protection and says the cutter is not insulated. [Klein Tools 63035SC] |
| FELCO C7 wire rope cutter | Maximum listed diameters on a FELCO product sheet hosted by SafetyLiftinGear, approximately 2022: 7 mm for galvanized rope with fibre core; 6 mm for galvanized rope with steel core; 5 mm for hard steel rope at the stated strength; 4 mm for non-oxidizable steel rope at the stated strength; and 3 mm for extra-tough rope or strands at the stated strength | The limits vary by rope construction and stated strength. Do not infer that the C7 handles every rope up to 7 mm. Confirm the exact model sheet and its terminology before selecting it. [FELCO C7 product sheet] |
| Klein Tools 63016 heavy-duty cable cutter | Up to 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) for aircraft cable and wire rope, per Klein’s current product specification accessed 2026 | This is a separate cable-cutter product with other material-specific limits. Its wire-rope figure is not a substitute for checking whether the tool suits a particular rope. [Klein Tools 63016] |
FELCO lists a broader cable- and wire-cutting range, including C7, C3, C9, C12, C16, C108, and C112 models, plus specialty models. Its range page describes steel cable and wire rope applications and says replacement parts are available; use the product-specific capacity information to choose among them. [FELCO cable cutters]

Compare cut quality, leverage, and maintenance
Cutting design and cut quality
Klein describes the 63035SC’s blades as shear-type and says they are designed for square, clean cuts. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independently measured result or a guarantee for every rope material and size. Check the specific tool documentation for the rope you plan to cut; do not assume every cutter produces a fray-free cut.
Leverage and access
Tool length, size, weight, operation, and access to the cut point can affect how practical a cutter is on a job. The cited specifications do not provide a like-for-like set of these details for the models above, so compare them in the exact model documentation rather than inferring handling from capacity alone.

Maintenance support
FELCO says replacement parts are available and advises cleaning blades, oiling pivot points, and storing the tool dry. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular model; maintenance guidance should not be assumed to be identical across brands or tools. [FELCO cable cutters]

Klein’s warning for the 63035SC is: “Always wear approved eye protection.” Klein also says the cutter’s slip-on plastic handles are not intended to protect against electric shock. The 63035SC is explicitly not insulated, so do not select or use it as an energized electrical cable tool. For electrical work, consult the exact tool’s insulation marking, intended application, and instructions. [Klein Tools 63035SC]
