The safest general option to investigate is a whole-home surge protective device (SPD) installed at the electrical service or panel by a qualified professional—not a generic plug-in strip. Before choosing any protection, check the exact washer and dryer manuals and electrical ratings. Some manufacturers prohibit power strips, and electric dryers may require a dedicated 240-volt circuit that an ordinary plug-in protector cannot serve.
What kind of surge protection is appropriate?
There are two distinct approaches, and they are not interchangeable. A whole-home SPD is installed at the service entrance or electrical panel. A point-of-use protector is a plug-in device placed between an appliance and its receptacle. The appliance manual and electrical setup determine whether a point-of-use device is permitted.
Whole-home SPD: the strongest general category to investigate
Eaton describes service-entrance surge protective devices as a way to help protect appliances and other sensitive electronic loads. Its product information discusses internal and external mounting options and visible status indicators; those are manufacturer descriptions, not comparative test results. Eaton recommends a two-stage approach—protection at the service entrance and at the point of use. Treat that as Eaton’s recommendation, not a universal requirement, and follow each appliance manufacturer’s connection instructions.
When considering a panel-installed SPD, ask a qualified electrician to confirm the device suits the electrical service and panel. Compare whether it is Listed or Recognized to UL 1449, its electrical compatibility and installation instructions, how its status is indicated, and the terms of any warranty. NEMA advises that AC power SPDs should be Listed or Recognized to ANSI/UL 1449 and installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions; it warns that non-listed devices may create fire or personal-safety hazards. UL Standards & Engagement lists UL 1449, “Surge Protective Devices,” as active, with an October 21, 2025 publication and ANSI approval date. A listing does not by itself establish fit for a particular panel or guarantee that an appliance cannot be damaged.

#1 Best Overall
- SURGE PROTECTION: Our protector ensures that your washing machine and appliances are safeguarded from high voltage, low voltage, power outages, peak currents, surges, blackouts, voltage fluctuations, and load changes. This extends the lifespan of your equipment and reduces maintenance costs.
- DUAL OUTLETS: Our protector features two outlets, protecting two appliances simultaneously. It's not limited to just washing machines; it's compatible with various appliances like refrigerators, microwaves, water dispensers, and dishwashers. This enhances convenience and saves you the cost of purchasing additional protectors.
- CLEAR INDICATOR LIGHTS: Our protector has simple indicator lights for normal, high voltage, low voltage, and delay statuses. If the power voltage exceeds the safe range, it will automatically cut off the power, and the corresponding indicator light will activate. This allows you to immediately understand the current protection and voltage status.
- SMART 3-MINUTE DELAY: After a voltage fluctuation, our protector includes a smart 3-minute delay. This ensures that reconnection only happens when the power is completely stable. This feature prevents your devices from repeatedly turning on and off during voltage changes and protects them from potential surges when power is restored after a blackout.
- USER-FRIENDLY: With a plug-and-play design, installation is straightforward. Once plugged in, it occupies minimal space and doesn't interfere with the normal use of other outlets.
Point-of-use plug-in protector: only when the manual permits it
Do not assume a plug-in surge protector is acceptable just because the appliance has a standard-looking plug. LG USA says it does not recommend operating its washer with an extension cord or power strip. That is LG guidance for its products, not a rule for every manufacturer; check the instructions for your exact washer before adding any device.
Do not use an ordinary multi-outlet strip for a 240-volt electric dryer. A cited Whirlpool installation instruction for specified U.S. 240 V electric models calls for a separate 30 A circuit, a grounded connection, and no extension cord. That specification applies to the models covered by those instructions, not every dryer. Other dryer types and models may have different requirements.

How to choose a whole-home SPD
- Identify the electrical service and panel. Gather the panel and service details and have a qualified electrical professional confirm compatibility. Do not select a device on the assumption that all panels or electrical services are alike.
- Check the safety standard and installation directions. Look for Listed or Recognized status to ANSI/UL 1449, then verify that the device can be installed as its manufacturer directs. NEMA cautions that non-listed devices may pose fire or personal-safety risks.
- Compare features that affect ownership. Review the specified mounting options, any status indicator, warranty terms, and the manufacturer’s installation requirements. Eaton describes some of these features for its own products; they are not evidence that one model outperforms another.
- Have the installer assess the fit. Ask the electrician to confirm the device’s compatibility with the service and panel and to install it in accordance with its instructions and applicable local code.
There is no evidence here to rank specific products or claim that a higher joule rating makes one model best for a washer or dryer. Choose by verified listing, installation fit, appliance requirements, and professional assessment rather than an unsupported product ranking.

Only if the manual for that washer permits it and the protector matches the appliance’s electrical ratings and receptacle. LG USA’s washer support page, “Powers On By Itself,” last updated May 28, 2026, states: “It is not recommended that your washer be operated using an extension cord or power strip.” For an LG washer, follow that guidance; for another brand, consult its model-specific instructions rather than assuming the same rule applies.
