A small soft brush can help clean an accessible pump filter; a kinked or blocked hose needs model-specific attention; and a snake may suit a compatible household drain. Do not pour a general chemical drain opener into the washer unless both its label and your washer manual explicitly allow it.
First identify where the clog is
A washer that will not drain does not automatically need drain cleaner. The three likely locations call for different remedies, and a product intended for a household pipe is not necessarily suitable for an appliance.
- Washer pump filter: Debris can collect in an accessible filter on some models and interfere with draining.
- Washer drain hose: A kink, compression, obstruction, freezing, or incorrect installation can restrict water flow.
- Household laundry drain: The washer may pump water out correctly while the pipe receiving it is clogged.
Whirlpool, LG, and Bosch troubleshooting guidance covers hose or pump-related causes, while LG also describes a way to distinguish a household drain problem from a washer-side problem. Exact procedures and installation limits depend on the washer model.
Compare remedies by the location of the problem

Check the drain hose and installation
Look for a hose that is bent, compressed, frozen, or visibly obstructed. Confirm that its placement follows the installation instructions for your exact washer. Do not apply one brand’s height or insertion-depth limits to another model.

Whirlpool also notes that excessive detergent can create excess suds and leave laundry very wet, which may be mistaken for a drainage clog. If the machine is not showing a clear blockage, check detergent use as well as the hose. Whirlpool’s washer troubleshooting page
Tell a washer problem from a household drain clog
LG describes a spin-test approach: disconnect the washer’s drain hose from the household drain and run a spin test according to the washer’s instructions. If water flows properly from the hose, the receiving drain may be clogged. LG’s support page summarizes the distinction this way: “If water is drained well through the drain hose when you operate as above, the drain may be clogged.” LG USA Support, June 4, 2026

Disconnecting a hose can spill water and may not be appropriate for every setup. Prepare for water, follow the manual’s safety instructions, and do not attempt the test if you cannot safely access the connection. If the washer itself does not pump water out, focus on the washer and hose rather than treating the household pipe first.
Clean the pump filter only if your model has an accessible one
A clogged pump filter can prevent draining on models equipped with one. LG’s guidance calls for draining residual water before removing and cleaning the filter; it warns that water can be hot and that a large amount may spill. Bosch likewise advises switching the washer off and unplugging it before its applicable pump-cleaning steps, and cautions that residual water may be hot.

- Check your washer manual to confirm that the model has a user-accessible filter and to find the approved procedure.
- Follow the manual’s instructions for switching off or unplugging the washer and draining residual water.
- Remove and clean the filter only as directed. A small soft brush, such as a toothbrush, is an optional tool for accessible filter debris.
- Reinstall the filter as instructed before testing the washer.

Do not assume chemical drain opener is washer-safe
The reviewed Drano liquid drain-cleaner instructions list bathroom and kitchen drains and garbage disposals as use locations; they do not list washing machines. A statement that a product is suitable for certain pipe materials does not establish that it is safe for a washer’s pump, seals, hoses, or other components. When to call for help
Contact the washer manufacturer or a qualified appliance professional if the hose and any user-accessible filter checks do not resolve the issue, or if the blockage is inaccessible. If the washer pumps water out but the household drain will not accept it, a plumber may be appropriate for the separate drain. Do not continue disassembly or use chemicals not approved for the relevant component.
