The best washing machine is the one that fits your laundry habits, available space, and budget—not a universally “best” type. Compare front-load, top-load agitator, high-efficiency top-load, compact, and all-in-one models by how they load, how much laundry they handle, their efficiency labels, and the installation space they need.
What makes a good washing machine?
A good washer cleans the loads you actually wash, fits the room and household routine, and has operating costs and maintenance demands you can live with. A feature list alone cannot establish which machine cleans best: compare independent results for specific models where available. Consumer Reports says its 2026 roundup uses lab testing with stained fabric swatches, but its broad category guidance is not a substitute for a model-by-model test result.
For energy and water comparisons, use the yellow EnergyGuide label to compare estimated annual energy use and operating costs. ENERGY STAR also identifies higher IMEF as greater energy efficiency and lower IWF as better water efficiency. Compare like with like and account for local utility costs; a label estimate is not a promise of your household’s exact bill.
ENERGY STAR’s U.S. clothes-washer guidance, accessed October 8, 2026, says certified washers use about 20% less energy and 30% less water than regular washers. It gives an example of about 14 gallons per load for full-sized certified washers versus 20 gallons for a standard machine. Those are program-level comparisons, not guaranteed savings for every model or household. The same guidance says certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than a top-load agitator washer.

Which type of washing machine should I choose?
| Type | Useful when | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Front-load | You want a front-opening machine and are considering an ENERGY STAR certified model’s efficiency profile. | Check door swing and room to open it. Loading and unloading require reaching down; Consumer Reports notes this may be uncomfortable for some people. Leave the door ajar after use so moisture can evaporate, as ENERGY STAR advises. |
| Top-load agitator | You prefer loading from above and want to compare this familiar configuration. | Compare its efficiency label with other washers; ENERGY STAR’s cited comparison finds certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than a top-load agitator washer. |
| High-efficiency top-load | You want a top-opening design but are also comparing high-efficiency options. | Check the specific model’s EnergyGuide estimate, IMEF, IWF, capacity, and cleaning results rather than assuming all top-load machines perform alike. |
| Compact washer | Your laundry area has limited width, depth, or height, or a smaller typical load. | Measure the full installation space and check actual usable capacity. Compact dimensions and capacity vary by model. |
| All-in-one washer-dryer | You want washing and drying in one appliance or need a configuration suited to a constrained layout. | Confirm the unit’s dimensions, capacity, installation requirements, and whether its wash-and-dry routine suits your household. |
These categories do not establish a universal winner. Match the configuration to loading comfort, typical load size, available space, efficiency priorities, and model-specific cleaning evidence. Consumer Reports’ buying guide and 2026 roundups offer category and testing context, but their pages were not fully accessible for review here; no specific model ranking is asserted.
How much capacity do I need?
Start with the size and frequency of your usual loads, not the largest number on a product page. A larger drum can reduce the number of loads if you regularly wash bulky items, but it takes up more space and may be unnecessary for a small household or frequent small loads.

Consumer Reports’ buying-guide search extract, updated May 26, 2026, gives examples of a 6.2-cubic-foot washer holding 17 thick, full-sized bath towels, and a compact washer listed at 2.7 cubic feet or less fitting about six. Treat those as illustrative examples from that guide, not universal capacity guarantees: confirm a shortlisted model’s stated capacity and dimensions.
How do I find a washer that suits my space?
Measure the installation area before choosing a model. Include the machine’s width, depth, and height, plus room for the door or lid to open, loading access, water connections, and any clearance specified by the manufacturer. For a stacked, under-counter, or all-in-one configuration, confirm the dimensions and installation requirements for the complete setup.

ENERGY STAR advises considering both placement and typical load size, and notes stackable, under-counter, and combination washer-dryer options. A washer that fits the opening may still be awkward to load or block a doorway when its door is open, so check the working space as well as the product dimensions.
Should I buy a washer and dryer together?
Choose a matched pair if both appliances need replacing and you have room for the configuration you want; choose a washer alone if the existing dryer still meets your needs or your laundry area only supports a washer purchase. Buying together is not necessary to select a suitable washer. Before committing, verify each appliance’s dimensions, door clearance, installation requirements, and compatibility with the planned side-by-side or stacked layout.

What washing-machine features are helpful?
Prioritize features that solve a real laundry or installation need. Useful considerations include controls and cycles that suit the fabrics and loads you wash, a configuration that is comfortable to use, and maintenance instructions you can follow. For a specific model, weigh those conveniences against its capacity, EnergyGuide estimate, IMEF and IWF values, cleaning evidence, and access to service. Marketing features by themselves do not prove better cleaning.
How can I reduce washer energy and water use?
- Use full loads where practical, following the washer’s manual and avoiding loads that exceed its guidance.
- Choose cold water for ordinary washing; ENERGY STAR notes that oily stains may call for otherwise appropriate treatment.
- Use a higher spin speed when suitable for the load to reduce the moisture left for drying.
- Compare the EnergyGuide estimate and efficiency metrics before buying, using comparable machines and local utility costs.
How do I maintain my washer?
Follow the owner’s manual for cleaning, detergent, loading, and any model-specific care. ENERGY STAR recommends leaving a front-loader’s door ajar after use so moisture can evaporate. Check the manual for the correct way to clean the machine and address any care or service guidance; procedures vary by washer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to compare shortlisted models
- Measure the laundry area, including access and door or lid clearance, and note any stacking or under-counter plan.
- Choose the washer type that suits your loading preference, household routine, and space.
- Estimate the capacity you need from typical loads and bulky items, then verify each model’s stated capacity and dimensions.
- Compare the yellow EnergyGuide label, IMEF, and IWF for models of similar size and configuration.
- Review independent cleaning results for the exact models when available, then check controls, maintenance instructions, service access, and installation needs.
